Princess Father,-

Tiie visit of Her Royal Highness man; the day when a young naval cadet made his ilrst call here as a member oi HMS Cum- berland. It was in 1913 that the ship under command oi captain 0. G. H. Smith arrived in port with the 17-year-old Prince Albert on board as one oi as naval cadets making a training cruise.

since then Prince Albert has be- come His Majesty King George VI, rather oi Princess Elizabeth.

The Oumberland was on ii six months” tour and had already vis- ited Teneriiie, Trinidad, Bar- hadoea, St. Lucia. Jamaica, Port Rico, Bermuda and other west 1i-dian islands beiore coming to Haliiax and Charlottetown, while it still had to proceed to Mont- real and Upper Canada. The cruise had been shortened by three weeks owing to instructions irom the Admiralty to return to Eng- land by June 15. in order that the uiicers might be present at the manoeuvring which was iixed ior the each.

Court in Mourning

No iestlvlties on a large scale were held owing to the iact that the-Court was still in mourning tor the death oi the Prince's granduncle. King George oi Greece, brother of the Queen Mother Al- cxandra.

Much interest. however. was naturally taken in the visit oi a son oi the reigning King and heir piesumpti to the British throne. and everything was done to make his brleg stay 5 pleasant one.

Commenting editorially on thcl visit. The Guardian said: "We in this Island Province are both loyal and patriotic. and rejoice heartily and sincerely in any oiiicial recognition which we receive irom the Royal Family and the Ad- miralty. In the present instance. though the Prince oi the Royal House in our midst is here practic- ally incognito, the whole commun- ity. while recognizing and respect- ing the wilhaa oi the King and Queen to reward their son as merely one-oi.tho sixty-live cadets on board till Iralning ship. ieels highly gratiiled that our island Province should be included in the itinerary oi His Royal Highness,a.s it was on the occasion oi similar rr-uises oi his father and grand- father King George and King Ed- ward. when they made their maid-, en cruises as mlddies."

Oiilolal Visits

Early on Saturday aiteriioon Captain Smith made his official visit to His Honour Lieutenant Governor Rogers, who later in the aiternoon made his iormal return call, and was saluted on leaving by seven guns.

As the Cumberland was making only a short stay and the Captain had accepted other engagements ior Monday, Captain Smith asked: permission oi His Honour to allow 1 him to call on Sunday aiternooii. accompanied by Prince Albert. izv order that His Royal Highness might pay his respects. and, this His Honour gladly acquiesced in

train and the Prince on behali oi the City, and expressed the wish that His Majesty's ships would visit the port oitener. He formally handed the captain a copy oi Mr. J Walter Joni.-s' book on Fox Farming. several copies oi Public- ity Agent J. E. B. McCready's publications about the Island. and the Board oi Trade's pamphlet on Charlottetown as a tourist resort.

The Captain. in acknowledging said he was greatly interested in the iox industry and hoped to have an opportunity oi visiting one or more oi the ranches. He also stated that this was his third visit to the Island. of which he had very pleasant rccollections,and ex- pressed his intention of returning hither on iuture ooaasions when cruising with cadets.

At ilve o'clock Sunday aiternoon. as arranged. Captain Smith ac- companied by Prince Albert, called at Government House and was entertained at tea by Mrs. Rogers. the young Prince evidently enjoy- ing his visit very much. The guests remained an hour. and the Prince charmed everyone by his (rank. boyish manner, and the interest hr. evinced in everything upper- iaining to the Island. He was par- ticularly attracted by the photo- graphs oi the silver black ioxes shown him. and asked many ques- tions concerning the liidiistry.

A Mishap

Earlier in the aiternoon an ac- cident occurred to the steam pin- nace oi the Cumberland while it was backing out from the Marine wharf with passengers. It was struck nmidships by a local motor boat and had to be beached to prevent sinking. No one was in- jured. but as it was Intended that the pinnaco would bring Captain Smith and Prince Albert to Gov- ernment House. the rumour im- mediately spread that the Prince had narrowly escaped drowning. This was not the case, but was the cause of His Royal Highness being somewhat late in keeping his appointment.

On Monday croiiiiii: an "at home" was given at Government House by His Honour the Lieuten- ant Governor and Mrs. Rogers There were about 30 cadets pre- sent. and quite a number of the

young people of Oh-r' -Dancing was a ieature oi the ai- iair, and Miss Mary Jenkins (now Mrs. Ivan Heddin) daughter oi Dr. S. R. Jenkins and Mrs. Jenk- ins, had the distinction oi being the only one present in dance with the Prince. His Royal Highness asking ior the pleasure oi a dance with Miss Jenkins shortly aiter she was presented.to him. Tea was served between live and six o'clock, the cadets making excel- lent waiters. being asslduous in their attention to the young ladies.

Those who had .the honour and pleasure of meeting the present King on that occasion were im- pressed with his youthiul shyness and evident sense of humour.

p The Cricket Match

In the cricket match at Vic- toria Park on Saturday afternoon the Prince acted as umpire, the cadet team badly deieating the locals. Players on the Charlotte- town team (the Phoenix Cricket Club) included Ernest Rice, Frank nutcheson. Gordon Toinlina. Ern- est Heartz, Proiessor Watkis, J. Goes, and Messrs. Fitzgerald, Mc- Eachern and McDonald.

The motto on the King's arms is "Dieu et mon olt"--mean- ing "God and my right".

A salute of (1 guns is always iired in London to mark the birth o: a royal infant in Britain.

The Royal accession to the Throne took place on December 11. 1936. three daysi before the King's birthday.

The travelling artist oi Frank Leslie's Illustrated Times-a New York paper-gave some outrageously ab- surd caricatures oi the Prince's visit to Haliiax. and equally ab- surd accounts oi it appeared irom the pen oi an individual who re- joices in the name oi Dr. Raw- lings, who, it appears. had been very properly dismissed ior incap- acity irom his situation as corre- spondent.

"But it was reserved ior the cor- rcspondeiit oi the London Times- who, one would suppose, ought to be a. well-iniormed gentleman-to give such proois oi intense ignor- ance, incorrigible stupidity and nlendaclty, as to eclipse all Yan- kee penny-a-liners that ever vis- lied the Province. We believe this ieilow was in Charlottetown, but we have not yet seen his account of his visit to this place. It is likely. however. that it will show about as mucii intelligence and capacity as the lying scribbler dis- played in his account or Haliiax."
