UPEI Student Does Pretty Good Donald Duck impression

If you were to close your eyes while UPEI student Nathan Doyle was speaking, you would almost swear that Donald Duck was in the room. That’s what Doyle’s friends and family “mem- bers claim, and after spending only a few moments with him, you would have to agree. He does a pretty good Donald Duck impres- sion.

“I’m so proud of my boy,” said Doyle’s mother, Joan. “Being able to do Donald Duck takes such skill and, to say the least, I’m a lit- tle envious. I’m not cut out to do impressions of famous people.”

“I love it,” commented Doyle’s girlfriend, Jennifer McQuaid. “There’s something so very sexy about a man who can talk like a cartoon character. I dated this guy once who talked like Scooby Doo. It was great, but I had to dump him because I realised that he was- n’t doing an impression. He wasn’t talented — he was a freak.”

Indeed Doyle understands the dangers of his talent. “I don’t do it all the time,” Doyle said, “but I do like to throw it in whenever con- versation gets stale. It gets big laughs every time.”

Depite what Doyle said, however, not everyone enjoys

Doyle’s impression. His friend and drinking buddy, Jamie McKinnon, said that he did not think that the impression is very good. “I mean, it’s decent, but it’s not so special as to_write a newspaper article about 8y

“I first discovered that I had this talent when I was fifteen,” said Doyle. “My voice had just gone through most of its changes by then and I was not yet sure I was capable of doing. I don’t want to get into too much detail because the situa- tion was kind of embarrassing, but let’s just say it involved an experi- ment in my school’s cafeteria, which involved three packets of pepper, a cup of milk, and a plastic knife.”

Doyle, a second-year

chemistry major, has no illusions about his talent. He understands that having such a talent will prob- ably lead nowhere. “In all likeli- hood, being able to do Donald Duck impressions is not going to lead to a career,” Doyle said. ‘I mean ideally I might be able to do some voice work for Disney, but I know it’s a longshot. They already have somebody.”

“The only way I could cap italise on this,” Doyle continued, “is if I do rip-off voice work for

radio commercials or something. You know, like how they get Clint Eastwood or Jack Nicholson to sell stereos but it’s not really them. But I don’t think I want to get into that because I’m sure Disney would be on my tail for character infringe- ment, or whatever you call it.”

Asked whether he could do any

other famous duck impressions, Doyle said, “Oh, I know what you mean. Like Daffy, right? You see, Daffy’s a completely different voice. He doesn’t even talk like a duck. He just has that lisp. I tried to

a couple of times, my voice just doesn’t have the right timbre to do Daffy.”

Nobody knows’ for certain what the future has in store for Nathan Doyle and his impression. For. now, the most important thing for him is school, which is some- times a challenge for him. “If 1 was as good at school as I am at my Donald Duck impression, then | would be happy man.”

He certainly would. He cer- tainly would.
