Organized in 1926 the Summer- :ide curling Club has had its ups Ind downs like the other clubs in Ihe Province. it was formed with , the encouragement of a group of ' commercial travellers and visiting business men. Outstanding among these was was Mr. M. P. Titus. now proprietor of the Clifton Hotel. srmmcrside.

It is recorded that after a num- ber of practice games on the ice . of the skating rink. the Club de- 5 clded to purchase the old Crystal ', Rink on St. Stephen street. which vg remained the home of the curling , club until 1948. The membership 1 of the Club ccntinued at an aver- l age of from 60 to 90. but interest noticeabiy lagged in the t40's. Three successive warm winters made play- ing nights few and uncertain, and even in 1917 when there were per- lrrls of fairly cold weather the olti rink was in such bad condition that good ice was seldom secured and social activities were at a stand- still.

In the spring cf 1943 only about .9 .- 40 members remained actively in- - terestcd in curling, and the task of reconstructing the Club seemed al- most hopeless. There was. however. . a very active nucleus in the mem- I bership. and work was begun on a .j, new rink. which has been complet- ' ed at a (2051. in the vicinity of 355.-. C00. The building is of concrete foundation and cement bicck walls re-inforced with brick pillars. Three sheets of artificial ice have been laid on a four foot Macadam fill. At the north. or Notre Dame Street . and of the ice, the ciub rooms have ' ICED located, censlsting of a full

Delays in the installation of the freezing equipment inevitably oc- curred. but curling finally began on January 26th.. 1949. within a week the men's curling membership . had-jumped to 180: 53 lady curler: I and 79 school boys had been en- rolled. "Membership Closed" sign had to be posted. and a substantial wai” ., list accumu' ted.

Eleanors and the ainnen were assigned a full after- noon to themselves in addition to the regular games to which the Air lharca members were drawn. rho Club was the first in the Prov- ince-to inaugurate lady manber- ahips. and the fair sex proved elves among the most active and aggressive members of the Club. Saturday evenings were as- signed to mixed curling. and the ladies were allotted four exclusiv. afternoon periods. The Club was also one of the first in Eastern Canada to introduce curling for high school boys. from grades 9 to 12. The boys were assigned two af- ternoon periods and the whole of Saturday morning.

Only the brilliant net minding of Nick Pidsodny rescued the league-leading Millionaires as they i.ra-Lied 3-1 up to the last half of the third period. Pidsodny handled 28 shots while Morissette was on the dangerous cnd of only 11 in the Vice net.

The game was the normal fast and rough variety the C. B. S. H I... produces. Sydney sat out eight of nine penalties, all minors.

MONTREAL. g Nov. Toronto Maple Leafs and Mont- real Canadiens played to a list- less 0-0 tie tonight in a National Hockey League game that lacked the usual fireworks of 1..eaf-Can- adien games.

A crowd of 14.571 saw the lea- gue-leading Leafs suffer their first shutout of the season. But the game preserved a couple of Leaf records.

It marked their fifth game with- out defeat and preserved the per- fect record of rookie goaltender Al Rollins. unbeaten in the Leaf nets this. season with six vic- tories and two ties in his eight starts. '

At Wednesday meeting of the Abcgweit Amateur

night's annual Athletic Club. some excellent re- ports were given by committee chairmen. outlining the successful activities of the Club in various fields of sporting endeavour throughout the past year. Many of those reports contained interesting highlights of the Club's accomp- lishments in making their con- tribution to the welfare and sup- port of true amateur sport. For the benefit of sports foilnwcrs who take a keen interest in local athletic endeavour, the following are some excsrpts from those re- ports: . c .

C. took part in five lrack and field meets. winning their share of ho".- ors in open ;'lflf”lIl'lB competition. This year. greater emphasis was taken in the development of ”. juniors, and ccazh Walter Smll brought together a squad that took top honors in three of the four meets in which they competed. Al- though the senior team was weak- ened this year by the loss of sev- eral top stars, they won top honors in one meet. and placed high in the point standing in other meets.

"Individual scoring honors were won by Wendali Barrett in three jur.-Ior meets and placing second in another. one of these being the Maritime Junior Championships. (Mr. Walters. incidentally. was high point winner at the Mari- time Invitation Meet held at Charlottetown) Several Maritime Championships were won by our stars, Wendall Barrett winning both the Maritime senior and jun- ior brond jump champion- ships. while Ernie Matheson re- tained his Maritime title in the hammer throwing event. Following a thrilling battle with the Wand- erers (Halifax). our relay team of C. Delorle. R. Jay. .1. Cash and R. Naylor again retained the Mari- time title. this being the fourth year the Alibies have gone unde- feated in this event.

"Although their strongest com- petition came from the smart Hal- ifax Wanderers team. our Abbie juniors rolled up a grand total of .129 points during the season to lead all other reams. while our senior team took second piacewlth I63 points to the Wanderers 189. In individual placing: the senior team won 16 firsts. and placed second in 13 cventshnd third in 26 events. The juniors won 11 firsts. placed second in 16 and third in 11. . . .

"In conclusio . your committee wishes to extend their thanks to the many who assisted the teams on their trips during the season and particularly to Brigadier "Bill" Reid. our Director of Physical Fitnms. During the past several years. Mr. Ileid has performed an outstanding job in organizing and conducting our local meets. with the result that top Maritime teams eagerly look forward to competing here each year. It was through his initiative and untirlng efforts that track and field competition took an upswing in the Maritimes fol- lowing the war. and his develop- ment of Memorial Field has brought us one of the liq) sports recreational centres in the Mari- times."

Reporting as chairman of the hockey committee. Jackie Kane outlined a widespread program of activity in that division last year. He stated that "teams wearing the Club colors were entered in com- petition in Paperweight. Pee-Wee. Bantam. Midget, Juvenile and In- termediato "A" brackets. as well as in Girls Open competition. All of these teams had practices ar- ranged by club msnagement and in addition to playing in organized leagues. nude sevenl trips to other centres for exhibition ,, as. on the whole." SAINT JOHN. N. 3., Nov. 30- (CP)-Saint John Beavers humb- led Moncton Hawks 4-1 tonight in a generally unexciting Maritime Senior Hockey League fixture. The thiizd place Beavers left Hawks nine points in the rear of the four-team circuit.

Rod McKenzie scored for Mone- ton in the first period after Saint John had gained a 2-0 lead. Beav- ers shot singles in the second and third.

Tommy Brennan opened the scoring on a passout from Paul Platz. The next tally was by Buck Whitlock on Nick Nlcolle's rebound. Monctcrrs orphan came when Beavers failed to check McKenzie as he emerged from behind tn Saint John cage. The hcmesters were awarded a penalty shot after Winn Mousseau fell on the puck in the crease but rennan missed the shot and Mouse in shoved a minor. "1 don't know how the fans in the rest of the League cities feel about it but I'm sure New York fans would welcome back the over- time session," Boucher said at a hockey writers luncheon.

Travel restrictions during the war caused the aboiishment of overtime during the regular season. overtime now is only in vogue dur- ing a Stanley Cup playoff game.
