DIGBY, N. 5., July 18 - (GP) - A thousand men with bulldozers and shovels worked tolllght to half. an uncontrolled forest fire ad- vancing on a village of 40 homes 10 miles from this Bay of Fundy town.

Firemen and volunteers. includ- ing 300 sailors from the nnvy's big training base at nearby Cornwallis, prepared for an all-night battle in an effort to break the back of the blaze before fresh winds in the morning.

Brisk winds today sent the flames within a. mile of the tiny settle-

ment of Lnndsdowne and for a

time out off a group of firefight- ers. some had to swim across a lake

to escape the licking tongues of fire but all escaped without injury.

A 31,500 summer camp was de- stroyed and several logging camps were reported ahead of the slowly- sdvancing firefront.

Starting Monday when lightning hit. a tree, the blaze was believed controlled by firemen Tuesday. But it started again with renewed fury Thursday and gained speed today as winds increased.

Tomorrow winds are expected to increase to is miles an hour and it will be sunny and hot with no sign of rain.

By the light of lanterns and floodllghts, farmers worked to con- struct flrebreaks around their frame dwellings while bulldozers and men battled the flames.

The outbreak skipped over a lake, nearly a quarter mile wide, and burned off the timber of a tiny 1;. land.

Flames jumped across the high- way and circled around behind a group of firefighters, cutting them off. some swam to safety and oth- ers found a pathway through the flames.

Lack of water is hampering con- trol efforts with the only source

At last reports tonight the fire had burned over about 1,000 acres.

Village Hidden

A forestry plane reported it could not spot Landsdowne becapsc of the heavy pail of smoke and that almost the entire County was cov- cred.

Two other outbreaks, one of them out of control about 10 miles from the blaze near Landsdowne, also were reported tonight.

A full crew of firefighters was at the scene and expected to have it under cont.roi by morning. It was reported burning about 50 acres of timber and cut land.

The other outbreak, two count- ies away, near Woodvliie in Hants County. was quickly controlled by it forestry crew which happtlied to be working on crown land ncarby.

WOODSTOCK, N.B., July 18.. (GP) - After the most intensive search in Carleton County's his- tory, three - year - old Beatrice Clarke, lost overnight in woods, was found just before noon today a half mile from her home at nearby Briggs Mill. She appeared unharmed by the experience.

Tomorrow, the R.C.A.F. and the United states Strategic Air Com- mand begin week-loiig air man- oeuvres which will test Canada's efficiency in detecting and destroy- ing attacking planes.

The exercise, dubbed signpost, will be Canada's largest since the Second World War and will be conducted by regular and auxiliary scnladrons and anti-aircraft bat- terles.

Air Vice-Marshal A. L. James. officer commanding the R.C.A.F'.'s Air Defence Command, said the exact number of planes and squad- rona and the names of targets is secret.

Fatality Al Cavendish Beach From llgart Attack Yesterday

Tragedy- struck at Cavendish Beach yesterday afternoon when Mr. Fred M. Smith, general sup- erintendent of the Canadian Na- tional Express, with headquarters at Montreal, suffered a heart at- tack whlle bathing and died al- most immediately.

The victim shortly before had finished playing 18 holes of golf with a friend, Mr. Alien, Mon- treai, and the two had decided to go swimming. Shortly after enter- ing the water both men showed the effects of their exertion and Mr. Allen called for help. Three
