Tue Agent General in London, for South Australia, has received a telegram stating that reaping has commenced in the northern dis- trict. It is estimated that there will be 375,- 000 tons of wheat for exportation.

flzavy Fire at Rimovski.—At 8 o'clock, p. m.,on Saturday, a fire took place at the Railway depot at Rimouski, destroying the station house, tank house, one snow plough and outbuildings. The Station Master lost the most part of his fuoniture. The loss is said to be estimated at from $10,000 to $12,000.

Born oN THE Ratt.—One of the emigrant assengers on the special train from Halifax, ast week, when at Arthabaskaville, Quebec,

was removed from the train to an hotel, and an hour afterwards delivered of a bouncing baby boy. The hotel is located within a few yards of the track, so that the youngster may fairly claim to have been “‘ born on the rail.”’

CABLEGRAMS to the Mail state the inten- tion of the Government to forbid the importa- tion of fire-arms into Ireland. Beaconsfield has signified his intention of supplying large quantities of coal to the suffering tenants. The Government has commenced important drainage works near Shannon River, which will assist in allaying the agitation. The ex- penditure will involve one hundred thousand pounds.

Tue Hieuesr Ixuasrrep Houses IN THE Wor.tp.—In the United States a miner’s house on Mount ‘Lincoln, Colorado, is 14,157 feet high. In Peru, a railway village called Galera is 15,645 feet high. Near this place is the celebrated railway tunnel of La Cima, whiéh is being bored through the peak of the mountain. be tunnel is 3,847 feet long, and is located 600 feet above the line of perpetual snow.

Tue first case of corporal punishment that has occurred under the laws of North Carolina

sinee 1866 took - ce a few days ago. A boy was convicted of assauit upon a girl, and be-

cause of his tender years the Judge informed his father that he would not pronounce sea- tence if he wonld wallop his scion in the) presence of the Sheriff. This was done with considerable vigor, and the boy doubtless will prefer in future te ge to ‘‘ a dungeon cell,” to tasting again the paternal birch.

Sap news of the death of Mr. Richard Locke, comes from Winsloe Road. The facts of the melancholy occurrence, so far as we can learn, are: While Mr. Locke was engaged at threshing yesterday evenirg, the belt, by some mishap, flew of! the fly wheel of the mill. A son. of Mr. Locke’s seized a plank and placed it under the platform to stop the mill. On deing this a splinter flew from the plank, struck the young man on the hand and cut off one of his fingers. Mr. Locke then took a fence pole and ran it through the fly wheel into the body of the mill. This caused the wheel to break and fly into frag- ments through the air. A heavy part of it struck him on the head and killed him almost instantly. Mr. Locke wss sixty years of age. He was much respected, and the news of his death has cast a gloom over Milton.
