If I could speak Spanish, this album might have been more interesting, unfortu- nately, I can’t. It had its moments, and the trumpet player was actually pretty good, but it’s far from memorable. There’s not much else that I can say about it, except that I now understand why it’s been sitting on a shelf since August.

Rusty

(Handsomeboy)

Rusty is Toronto’s current most sought after independent band, and with this five song debut E.P., they show just what has all of the major record companies scrambling to sign them. High energy guitar raunch is the name of the game, and Rusty plays the game well. Highlights include ‘‘Wake Me’’ and ‘‘K.D. Lang’’, a punk tinged ode to Canada’s prairie songstress. Clocking in at just under twenty minutes, Rusty is short, but certainly not sweet. Look for big things from this band in the future.

La Boittine Souriante (Mille-Pattes)

It’s hard to review this album in Eng- lish, but I’ll give itmy best shot. The musician- ship is incredible. It’s not necessary to speak French to enjoy this album. There are some incredible effects on the violin. Inmy humble opinion the best track on the album is the first one, ‘‘Le Riel Des Soucoupes Volants’’, which translates to the ‘‘Reel of the Flying Saucers”’. The use of brass instruments intermingled with voice and violin make for some interest- ing sound combinations. The vocalist has one of the most interesting voices I’ve ever heard. What else can I say? Buy it!

Catch of the Day

An Atlantic Canadian Sampler. (Duckworth Distribution)

There certainly are some interesting artists on this album, including Uisce Beatha, Matalie MacMaster, and Evens and Doherty. On the other hand, there are also some cruddy ones, like Laura Smith. She has the most annoying voice of anyone alive. CBC seems awfully fond of her though, as they play her with grating frequency. Overall, the album is a worthwile adventure. I rather liked it.

Funky Little Demons

I’m not really sure what to say about this album. It’s well done, and I liked it, but nothing stood out. Nothing overly memora- ble. An all-around good album, with a few intersting songs. I don’t know if I’d have gone out and bought it, but it makes for really good backround music. (3.5) -- Cate Hanus

Mike Watt

Ball-Hog Or Tugboat? (Columbia/Sony)

Mike Watt brought a few of his very closest friends together to record an album, and is what came of it. His friends for this outing are a veritable who’s who of the post- punk music scene, including the surviving members of Nirvana, Eddie Vedder, and Meatpuppets to name a few. The styles of the seventeen tracks vary widely from modern punk, to rootsy rock, to a confused form of jazz.

The songs are all reasonably well writ- ten, however, Ball-Hog Or Tugboat proves beyond doubt that too many cooks truly do spoil the broth. Despite the excellent person- nel, the overall feel of the record is disorder. This album isn’t a write-off, but it isn’t a classic either.

Inside, you find mor ings and lots of pictures as well as thes how it all got started for the Toronto record label ‘‘Fort Apache’’.
