Istanp Oysters.—The Moncton Times says: Mr. John D. Henderson « few days ago shipped to Sir Charles Tupper, Can- adian High Commissioner in England, a barrel of P. E. Island oysters. The bivalves were raked near St. Eleanors, and were care fully selected for this shipment. They are ssid to be the finest birrel of oysters ever seen in Monctoa. The shipment was made via Halifax.

Satvation Aumy.—The Salvation Army will be shurtly having their annual week of thankagiving, prayer and self-denial. The dates are from November 6th to 12th, inclusive. One special feature of the self-denial week is an appeal which is made to every individual member and follower of the Salvation Army to deny themselves of some article of foed or clothing, or in some way, so that without lessening their regular contributions they{may be able to help the self-denial fund.

Acainst Tar Crty.—The city of Moncton has no less than six law suits pending. They are: Captain Newcomb, of Parraboro, for damages for the loss of his vessel, which he alleges was due to negligence of harbor officials; L T. Joudry, tor dam»ges to his

Allen, who sue for fale arrest for taxes; and Miss Woods, who sues tor damages sustained from falling into « sewer excavation which it is alleged was not properly lighted and otherwise dangerous.

Scorr Act.—The Scott Act is again likely to become a burning question in Moncton. Last March a Seort Act coune:! was elected, that is tha mayor and four of the six aldermen were endorsed by the temperance people, but beyond a little spurt at the beginning of the year, things have moved along about as usual. The sale of liquor has been as open and defiant as ever, and for two or three months the customarily occasional Scott Act case has not appeared on the police cart records. An effort is now being made by the tem- perance people to have an imepec'or ap- pointed for the city. Deputations from the Sons cf Temperance and the Temple of Honor recently waited on the Council to discuss the situation and press their claims. The whole matter will likely be fully con- sidered at the next meeting of the board.

AN Expensive Joxke.—Miss Laonora Al- dis appeared in the superior court at New York on Monday, with her sister, Addie, to hear the verdict in the breach of promise suit she had brought against George Stew- art, the son of a wealthy coal dealer on the east side of the city, who said his promise to marry her was a joke. Miss Aldia said she lost forty-four pounds in weight and her hair had turned gray because of his neglect. The jury returned a verdict of $5,600 damages for Miss Aldis. The plain- tiff had asked for $20,000. A motion for anew trial and « stay of execution was made. The first was Genied, but Stewart was given thirty days to pay the damages.
