Mr. Ilsley went on to cite the benefits of family allowances, In Prince Edward Island for August of this year the figures showed 12,567 families in receipt of these payments. The number of chil- dren was 31,642, the average al- lowance per family $14.93; the av- erage per child per month, $5.94. The amount paid out for August in this Province was $108,055. The total paid out for the year was $2.194.000.

There is a condition that the children must go to school, Mr. Ilsley explained. The number of children in Prince Edward Island

were suspended for unauthorized absence from school in the year ending March 31, 1947, was 1.376. The number on whose behalf the allowances were reinstated for re- sumlng school attendance was 1.- 159.

As a. result of the payment of family allowances. many lmprgvg. ments had been reported. These include substantial additions to children's diet, particularly among lower income groups; more adeq- uate clothing; increase in school attendance; more extensive use of medical, dental and optical ser- vices by parents for children; outlets, and expansion cf cultural oppor- tunities, such as art and music lessons.

"As regards the misuse of fam- ily allowances." Mr. Ilsley said. "while it is impossible to make an authoritative statement. it can at least be said that the complaints to date have been infinitesimal in proportion to the number of -al- lowances paid." _
