1 lb. of washed and dried currants l lb. of glace cherries. A l’. lb. of mixed candied peel.

2 teaspoonfiils of cinnamon.

1 teaspoonful of allspice.

1 cupfiil of fine sugar.

‘l lb. of cltron.

2 cupfuls of flour.

1 lb. of seeded raisins.

‘ii teaspoonful of salt.

‘.5 teaspoonfiil of nutmeg.

‘r3 teaspoonful of mace.

I cupful of butter.

6 eggs. '

Red and green cherries make this cake very colorful and attractive. Cut most oi them in half, tear the raisins apart. Wash currants and dry them thoroughly—this takes time. Shavecitron and mixed cand- ied peel as thinly as possible. Mix flour, salt and spices well and sift them several times; dredge some cf the mixture over the well-mixed fruits, coating them all lightly.

Cream the butter; work in sugar gradually; add the well-beaten egg yolks. Add alternately tne remaining flour mixture and fruit juices, then

the well-floured fruit and finally fold in the stiffly-beaten egg whites.

Have cake pan greased and lined with heavy white paper, buttered. Put in a layer of the cake mixture about an inch thick and over this spread the thinly-shaved peel and a few additional whole cherries if available; put in another layer of cake mixture and repeat. Over the top layer of dough, arrange blanch- ed almonds or nuts, cherries, citron and strips of angelica in any decor- ative pattern. Bake in a very slow oven. 250 deg. Fbhn, about four and a. half hours, if you have a thor- oughly dependable oven which you can regulate with confidence. Other- wise, it is safer to steam the cake for three hours, then finish by bak- ing three-quarters of an hour in a moderate oven, 350 deg. Fahr.

When the cake is finished, let it stand for five minutes before remov- ing from the pan. Let it cool on a wire cake rack, and when cold wrap closely in wax paper and put away in a metal box with a close-fitting cover to ripen.

But your letter ls not the ‘only one that I have had bearing testimony to the virtue of spanking. I have received many letters from other wives who have had the same’ experience and every one of them kissed the hand that smote them and told practically the same tale that you have done, that they loved their husbands better for making them behave themselves and that the spanking they got had literally saved their souls.

All of which is perfectly logical. for no woman loves the man she doesn't respect and no woman respects a man she can run roughshcd over. Every woman has a contempt for the husband who submits to her henpecking or who meekly endures her nagging or who lets her ruin him

with her extravagance or who gets up and gets his own breakfast while she lles in bed of a morning. The man a woman really loves is the man who is stronger’ than she ls, who will be kind and indulgent to her, but who will expect her to act like an adult human being and not a moronic child and do her part of the work and bear her share of the burdens in their matrimonial partnership.

But the individual in this triangle that I particularly wish to pay tribute to is the mother who refused to - accessory before the fact to her daughter's causeless divorce. If there were more mothers who had the backbone to tell their married daughters to stick to their hun- bands and their homes and do their duty instead of "poor-Marylng" them and encouraging them to quit because they found marriage was not all their romantic fancy painted, it would do more than any one thing to cut down. divorces.

If more girls knew that mother's door would be closed to them if they left their husbands there wouldn't be so many who leave their homes because they have lost their taste for their husbands or uretired cf cooking and baby-tending or because they want to be free once more and have a good time.

I once knew a mother who hgd several daughters, to each of whom she said on her wedding day: “No, my dear, you are getting married and I expect you to stay married. You have picked out this man for a hus- band. Stlck to him through thick and thin. Of course, you are not going to find marriage the picnic you think you are. It is a hardjob and there will be many a time you will be tempted to run away from it, but no daughter of mine is going to be a. quittcr and countenanced by me.
