She had placed her hand on his arm as she spoke, and he gazed at her as if he ‘ould not understand or hear her. He sweet, sympathetic face, full of tender- ness and remorse, added tothe unreality of the scene. He was dreaming, and
this was some fiend’s temptation.
“You will not forgive me? Don't look like that, Captain Balfour. If I ruined your life, think what I suffered, what we have both suffered, and let us make the best of our—broken lives. Long ago you asked me something. Are you of the same mind now?’
“That is part of the punishment,” he groaned. “Iam. How can I change?”
“Oh, then, it is easy. Don't talk of punishment. Heaven helping me, I will try and make you forget the past.”
He shook off her hand impatiently
“For heaven's sake don’t torture me; I can’t bear it. I shall—no, I am ill, but I will not yield. Listen, Lela. I love you more, if possible, than before, but you shall not marry me—yonu shall not become the wife of a murderer.”
Lela only replaced her hand.
“You believe it, I see, but it is not trne. Don’t you know that my money was his last chance? His blood is on his own head.”
“No, on mine. I can not let you think nobly of me. Listen: Iam his murder- er. Lought to bein prison now if jus- tice were impartial. You had better have married a drunkard, a gambler, a man with no principles, than a murder- er. Don’t look so oan I did it. Iheard the shot and ranup. It was dark—quite dark. Oh. heaven, I was a cauesl. I feared he would be mad with drink and would fire at me, and—I turned back. |! went back afterward with the others, but it was too latethen. At first I might have stanched the blood, I might have lifted him, and he might have lived. Yes, I turned back. I, who have never turned my back on a foe. I did it then. There, Lela, I could not abase myself more than by telling you. I have never told any one else, but I have dene it now. Goodby, and forget us all—forget me especially.”
CHAPTER IIL.
For some days after this Balfour went about in a queer kind of state and then gavein. ‘Climate and the old attack,” the doctor said. Below the ever present pain, however, was a new fecling, al most calming. He had been in purga- tery, but he had avenged Alan. Then again came times of almost frenzy at the thought of Lela and what he had re- fused. How good and true she was, how she had been stanch to Alan as long as possible, and then she had turned to him! But he had not allowed heaven’s most perfect creation to give herself to a—a— “I told her, I used that word, I am sure of it, and she went away without an- other word. She was right and noble as ever; she would not pain me by words, but she knew I was right.”
In spite of this he found out all that Lela had done, how she had gone sooner than she had intended, and that instead of going to Italy she had gone to Eng- land with some dear friends. It di¢ not matter where. She was gone, she had acquiesced in his renunciation He lived on this high tableland of thought for some time, and then broke down utterly, and the doctor said thai he must be shipped back home at once. Quicksands was deeply disappointed at the failurz of his plan.
“That girl’—meaning Miss Adair—*‘iz too high and mighty for me. Give me one of the little girls that will forgive and forget, kiss and make up. That* the girl for me, not one like Miss Adair. Her heart's all made up of pride.”
The little officer did not say this in
Ralfour’s hearing, but on the day he left for England to go to the aunt who had brought him up, and who was, as she expressed it, ‘‘another mother to him.” Quicksands, who had once seen her, said that he preferred having but one mother and not rejdacing her.
Some three weeks after Lela’s depar- ture and a week after Balfour’s disap- pearance, Quicksands, lounging near the landing place, amused himself by watch- ing a small boat being rowed in from the Britannia, a process satisfactory to no one except the boatmen who received the fees.
“By George, those ladies will get a wetting!”
Then, as they neared, he started for- ward.
“Miss Adair,1I declare.” In the pres- ence of ladies Quicksands tried to re member that an affirmation suited his or their conscience better than an oath. **You have come back to the old rock, then?”
“Only for a few days. Miss Henton, my friend, has never seen it. We are going to a hotel in the town. Thank you, Iam not too wet. How is Captain Balfour?”
“Oh, awfully seedy. Gone—invalided home. This time he is hit and won't get over it.”
Lela flushed,
“Gone home ill?”
“Yes, awfully ill.”
“I think we shall go home by the next steamer. A short time suffices to see the rock, doesn’t it, Captain Quickett? By the way, what is Captain Balfour's ad- dress? You will know; you were so good to him.”
“More than you were,” thought Quick- sands, supplying the information, and adding:
“But he won't see any one, and his aunt is a virago!”
That was all that passed, but she went away quickly and left Gibraltar the next day. Quicksands told the mess that she couldn’t stand the rock more than a day and a night, and he added:
“It looked as if she meant something this time, but it’a too late. Women always come in after the finish, whenit’s no more earthly use.

“Leigh, do rouse yourself and take this mixture; it's my own making, and if you took it you would look less ill and lose your headaches,”

There were voices in the hall, and Leigh heard a tone which suddenly moved him. He sat up.
“Impossible!” he murmured, but his head and hands grew burning hot at the bare idea.
“Excuse me, Miss Pa'fonr, bnt I must.” The door was opened, and Lela herself was there, and Leigh's heart seemed to stop beating, but at least, if he must die, he had seen her again. But what was she saying?
“Captain Balfour, Leigh—I have been to Gibraltar for you, and you were gone, soI have come back here. Mother wants me back in Italy, and I must not stay long. I must go back as soon as possible, but Iam here to tell you.”
‘Tell me what?”
“That it is all right. You are not a”"— Shecould not saythe word. “And, please, Leigh, if you were—I—I would stlll be your wife. It was not in inten- tion. But all the same I knew you would never marry me if you thought so, and I went to England to find that doctor, the doctor who attended him, and he says nothing, nothing—do you hear, Leigh? —nothing would have saved him, even if you had been in the room. It did not alter anything really, and now, oh, I a:n so hungry! May I have something to eat before I go back toItaly? And before then, please”
“Well!” murmured Miss Balfour, lift- ing up her hands in horror.

‘He had better take this one first,” said Lela, half laughing, half crying, because Leigh had taken her hand and did not loose it. ‘Leigh, cay ‘Ta. ”

Whatever discomfortsthe traveler may have to undergo im journeying throngh Guiaaza, he is compensated for them by the scenery, which is more enchanting than the loftiest filghts of the imagina- tion can picture. As soon as you leave the low swamps at the great mouth of the Orinoco, the land rises gradually to- ward the Jmataca range, the peaks of which are clearly outlined against the clear tropic sky. Still farther into the interior, following the windings of the Rio Cuyuni, the green banks of which are bright with scarlet passion-flowers, you see more mountain peaks, and in- numerable cascades and waterfalis tum- biing and rearing over rocks that raise their black heads above the surface of the water. On all sides countless para- sites entwine themselves in the most in- tricate and fantastic fashion around the branches of the lofty trees.
It was my good fortune to reach one of the loftiest of the Imataca peaks just at sunset, the hour that most impresses all travelers. ‘To the south and east, as far as the eye could reach, the scene was one of indescribable beauty and grandeur. Below, the great Cuyuni, unknown to the world for so many generations, but now with a name in history, wound in and out of the green valley iike a ser- pent of a thousand colors. The soft rays of the afternoon sun, glimmering through the mist of waters, fell upon the river in showers of rubies, sapphires and diamonds. Soon darkness closed upon the valley, for in the tropics the twilight is as telef as it is entrancing ind on all sides the tiny camp-fires of the Indians twinkled like myriads ot fire-flies. Now and then the stillness was
