Its people tend to ac- cept most things in a matter of fact sort of way without undue excitement or animation, except their national sport and grand passion—harness racing.

The Island's “harness racing fever" will be the subject of CBC-TV's 20-20 series Sunday. at h p.m. AST.

Entitled “Canada's Kentucky" the program will trace the his- tory of the sport on the Island and look at the people involved. Viewers will see the old form of racing which still exists, called matinee racing. and the present day form with the mobile start-

To get into the action. the pro- gram will take viewers into an actual race with its dust, mo- tion; the sound of drivers. sul- kies. horse‘s: and even the track announcer. Frank Acorn.

Most of this action was filmed at the Charlottetown Driving Park, the headquarters of bar- ness racing on the Island. Dur- ing the season. which runs from May to October. over 200 an mals are stabled there. Most of them are Island bred. all Island owned. The owners come to the track each day to 0 their own training. taking time off from their business life in the stores. banks and law offices. Members have been known to rise from sittings in the provincial legisla- ture to give a favorite horse its daily workout!

The harness racing tradition started over 100 years ago when Island farmers began raising carriage horses for the New England market. More attention was given to breeding and soon the emphasis was placed 0 n speed. Each community had its fastest horse which was match- ed in impromtu races. first on the dusty clay roads and then on primitive tracks.

en came one race on Aug- ust 30, 1888. that old-timers say really started the harness racing boom on the Island. The horses were local champions and they attracted 5,000 people to the Summerside race track. while telegraph wires carried 0 re- sults to every hamlet.

This t r a d ltlon has become deeply embedded with each passing generation. It has been passed from father to son in families like Ralph MacFad- yen‘s. Like his forbears, this farmer-horseman of H u n ter River. breeds his own stock. does most of the training and all the competitive driving.

Then there are those on the Is- land like Archie MacPhee of Pinette who race purely for the fun of it. He participates in the casual meet called Matinee Rac- ing. There is no entry fee. prize money or parimutual betting: just a rough half-mile oval and friendly but fierce rivalry. The horses are started in the old way. a method called scoring.

Hollis Jenkins of Southport, is a school-teacher- farmer by pro- fession and a horseman by in- clination. His stable Is small with only two or three horses in racing condition, a brood mare, a foal. and a yearling. Jenkins and other small operators like him hope to have one animal who will win often enough to pay the food bills for the rest.

This racing tradition has pro- duced trainer-drivers like 0 Hennessey who is recognized as one of the best in the business. He drove his first race with one of his father’s horses 22 years ago at the age of 15. “COLONEL DAN"
