Monrreat, June 17.—The new St. James’ Methodist Church, one of the finest ecclesiastical structures on the continent, was opened for divine service yesterday. It has a seating capacity of 2,700.

Loxpon, June 17.—The steel torpedo depot ship Vulcan was launched at Ports- mouth a few days ago. She is the largest vessel the government has ever built. It is intended that she shall accompany a tleet and carry a large eauipment of tor- pedo boats. She will form a floating work- shop. The Vulcan is 6,620 tons burden, and 12,000 horse power.

Jounstows, Pa., June 17.—Edward Swineford, of St. Louis, Mo., who has been here searching for the bodies of his wife and mother, who were lost on the express train, has been sent home a raving maniac. The knowledge ot the fate of his wife and aged mother robbed him of his senses.

Sr. Perersgure, June 17.—Newspapers here minimize the significance of the Czar’s recent toast to the Prince of Montenegro, aud declare that the foreign press received a wrong impression regarding the matter and exaggerates the importance of the Czar’s utterances on the occasion.

Lonpon, June 17.—Inquiry into the re- cent railway disaster near Armagh began to-day. Several witnesses testified that they had warned the officials of the train that it would be a risky proceeding to detach the rear cars on the incline. The detached cars attained a speed of sixty miles an hour when they collided with the train behind them.

St. Patrick’s Church was the centre of mn attractive gathering yesterday morning, when Mr, Joseph Lanthier, nephew of Mr. Bain, M. P., of Soulanges, led to the altar Miss Clara, youngest daughter of Mr. Don- ald Melsaac. late ex-High Sheriff of Char- lottetown, P. E. Island, and niece of Judge Reddin of the same place. Mr. Philip Lanthier, brother of the groom, Was best man, and the two young Misses Gertrude Fitzpatrick and Annie Gorman, neices of the bride, acted as bridesmaids. After the pleasing church ceremony Was cover, the happy couple with their intimate friends proceeded co the residence of the bride's father on Albert Street, to partake of & sumptuous repast. The bride and groom were the favored recepients of many pre- sents, among which were conspicuous & beautiful china breakfast and dinner set, presented to the former by a few apprecia- tive friends ot the Argyle House. The young couple left on the 11.46 train on their wedding tour for Montreal, carrying with them the felicitations of their many friends. — Ottawa Citizen, 12th.

A statement is going the rounds of the press that Mrs. Joseph Chamberlain, the Am- erican lady formetly known as Miss Endicott, is very much disgusted with the loose char- acter of conversation and gossip in exclusive English society. She is reported to have left the table of a peeress on account of some re mark that was made. The guests were astonished at what they considered her ex treme prudery, but the Queen approves o! Mrs. Chamberlain's course.
