Mr. Martin \vas introduced by the Hon. Dr. W. J. P. MacMlllan who said that the Canadian Medical As» sociation. as well as the nine Pro- vincial Medical Associations, was 100 pcr cent behind the efforts of Mr. Martin's department to bring health to all the citizens of Can- ada.

$15,000 has been granted the Pro- vince for a health survey; $33,000 for general public health; and the Province will be granted its share of the $56,000 allocated this year to the Maritime Provinces, for the treatment and care of crippled children. In addition, Mr. Marlin said, a grant of $46,000 has been provided for the control of tuber- culosis ln the Province, and pro- jects, submltted by the Provincial Planning Commission, working in conjunction with the Provirt- cial Department ol’ Health and Welfare, have been approved by the Federal Department which call for the expenditure of fully half of the Province’: allotment from the na- tional cancer grant of $3,500,000.

Mr. Martin said $53,000 has been appropriated for the treatment of mental illness in this Province and that six projects concerning the treatment of mental illness ln the Province had been approved.

600 More Bods Needed

Preliminary estimates were made in the Province last year, Mr. Mar- tin said, which indicated that the Province needed 1100 more hospital beds. Whether Lhls estimate was too large. too small, or fairly ac- curate, the provincial health sur- vey will determlne. However, the Federal grants are on the basis of $1,000 for each active treatment bed and $1,500 for each chronic, convalescent mental or tuberculosis bed. Those grants are to be match- ed dollar for dollar by the Provin- cial Government and $97,000 has been appropriated this year by the Federal Government for hospital beds in the Province.

“Because of the added impetus that the Federal grants will now provide," Mr. Martin said, "I look forward in Prince Edward Island, as in every other part of Canada, to a new era of health activity that will lead to a larger measure of health and of happiness for all our fellow citizens."

Despite present difficulties, Zilr. Martin trolced his firm conviction in the destiny of the United Na- tions, as WPli as in the sincerity of all political parties in supporting the Dominion Government's ef- forts to make the aims of this or- ganization the corner-stone of its foreign policy.

Citing his own experience as a delegate at UN. conferences in London, Paris and New York, he said the situation was fraught with tremendous difficulties, due to Russia's use of the veto porter to frustrate the efforts of peaco- seeking "nations, and to her con- tinuance in the prosecution o: a "colzl ivar" witiuh could easily ro- suit in actual war whose conse- quences at this time would be more terrible than anything we have ever experienced or could imagine.

“So we as Canadians within the last one hundred years have moved from one phase of national growth to another, and have become one of the important world powers called upon to make our contribution Ina world whose people want to llvo in freedom and peace.

The directors of the formed Cherry Valley Farmers organization met lest night, under the chairmanship of their president. Ronnie Mclnnis, attd drew up plans for the winter and summer. It was decided t0 hold gettcral weekly’ meetings dur- ing the winter. and semi-monthly meetings next suntmer.

Plans were made to put on a play and a “share the wealth" pro- gram will be held in Cherry Valley hall this month.

In co-operatlon with Women's Institute branches. the Junior Farmers will place radios in Cherry Valley and Earnscliffe Schools.
