Too Many Studies

Some of our contemporaries in other Provinces of Canada are raising a protest against the great number of studies re- quired of children attending the public schools, and the wholesale ** cramming, ’ necessary to success in the examinations, In respect to all these branches of instraction. It is contended that “there are too many examinations and too many subjects taught to make a child proficient in any one of them,” and that the powers of the mind are rather weakened and stunted thau strengthened and cultivated by the heavy pressure of daily studies. The Free Press of London, Ontario, maintains that *‘ the time allotted to common school education is so short that at the best only a compara- tively small field can be covered adequate- ly. But the majority of pupils have even that brief time more or less shortened by necessity. With them the time is so short than if mere than a very little is under- taken nothing is learned well. This fact is not sufficiently recognized in our graced system. The assumption is toc general that each pupil will go through the whole forms or classes. Beginnings are made in too many things, aod if the course is cut short these beginnings leave the pupil with little to show for his work, and if he leaves school, the pupil has confused ideas of everythiog, and knows nothing perfectly.”

The same paper argues that ‘* the key to all knowledge is the ability to read intelli- gently. In view of the facts of life among the pupils, the first care should be to teach that art and its handmaid, writing, a3 thor. oughly as possible in the briefest time, so that if the pupil’s school course is cut short he will at least carry away with him the instruments of self-education. Yet, as a matter of observed facc, neither reading nor writing is well taught in the lower grades of our schools, and, indeed, both are very imperfectly taught even in the higher grades. In order to learn to read fluently and understandingly one must read much. The pupils in our schocls read nothing —as a rule—but fixed lessons of brief extent (and are sometimes kept two weeks and a month on one lesson), the groater part of the time being given to other things. Ass result, they read badly in the lower grades, and often even when they pass for the High School. With writing the case is still worse. No person can learn to write easily, repidly and legibly with character in the reault except by much and continuous practice. The schouls ought to give such practice, as afew private schools do. In- stead, they set the boys and girls the task of laboriously imitating an engraved copy or a blackboard ‘esson for a certain time each day, and when their schooling is over the best they can do as a rule ia pain- fully to draw uncertain of their copies as they remember them. They have no facility in writing, and there is neither character nor dignity in what they do. In the teaching of English grammar the fault is still greater, and of one hundred pupils taken from our public schools not ten can ordo speak cor- rectly. It should be the care of the schools to teach their pupils to speak or write Eng- lish with propriety. This is really the sole aim of grammar. But they teach nothing of ihe kind to the great majority. They muddle their brains with an attempt to make « philosophical analysis of the lan-

guage—a task im which no one can proper- ly engage till after he has learned the lan- guage. The result is profitless, the time misspent. Every banker or other person who employs boys in his bus- iness knows from experience that the boys who come to him from the public schools bring very little to his service beyond more or less limber legs, with such natural shrewdness as they chance to possess. Their education has not fitted them in any valuable degree for work. In tro many cases they canaot read well, write well or speak correctly, In fact there is a general lack of proficiency and thoroughsess in the three R's, especially in the reading and ’riting part. This is the natural result of the system which aims at cramming too many studies in too short a space of time.”

A correspondent of the Halifax Chronicle complains that so overpowering are the school studies in Nova Scotis that even some of the candidates for teachers’ li- censes fail in spelling; and it has been no- ticed that some of the teachers themselves do not, at all times, spell ordinary words correctly, Surely the public scheols ought aim to teach their pupils how to spell.

These remarks may not, perhaps, be ap- plicable to Prince Edward Island. We be- lieve that there is no province of Canada in which the work of the public schools is bet- ter performed than itis here. Yet it is well to be on guard, even here, against too many studies aad too much cramming. The motto of our teachers and pupils, alike, ought to be ‘* Thorough.”

—Seventy-five thousand personsattended the Toronto exhibition on Tuesday last. The popularity of the ‘exhibition ” is not yet on the wane.

—The fact that the revenue of Canada for the past two months is grester than in the same two months of lest year is the most recent proof that the country is being ruined by the N. P.

—-We have to thank The Press of New York for a ** pocket Cyclopedia of Protec- tion,” containing facts and figures on every phase of the tariff controversy, now raging in the United States.

—Says the eminent physician, Dr. Andrew Wilson : When you feel faint in a public place, beud down and bring yvur head well between your legs. Drop sume- thing on the floor if you wish to avoid at- tracting attention, and take a long time in picking it up. This lowering of the head sends the blood to the brain, and will often avert a faint alcogether.

—The writer of the colonial articles in the Lordon Times says of Canadian policy on the canal question: ‘One cannot help expressing admiration for the calm and conciliatory spirit with which Canada meets the somewhat blustering threats of her powerful neighbor. If the United States manifested a similar spirit the question would present little difficulty.

—The safe arrival at St. John's of the steamer Kite with Lieut. Peary and party on board will take a lead of anxiety from a good many minds. Lieut. Peary’s party was a novelty in Arctic exploration m that it was accompanied by a lady, Mrs. Peary. It was (ar from being aa wellequipped as it should have been for the work it under- took, and most who understood its situation looked for very little as the results of its efforts. The outcome, however, has been most bappy. Only one member of the party has perished, by accident, and the leader, who entered upon his work with a broken leg, was able to carry his country’s flag to s point further advanced towards the pole than any of his predecessors in Northern exploration.

Professor Robertson's Report.

Professor Rcbertson, Dominion Dairy Commissioner, has just returned from the maritime provinces, and reports 4 remark- able devel: pment of the dairy industry iv New Bruaswick and Prince Edward Island. In the former province the demsud upon the experimental dairy station was so great that the entire equipment will have to be enlarged this winter. The past season at the station was in every way succeasful, and as a result of the season’s work there are now 17,000 pounds of butter on hend which will be shipped to England. To promote winter dairying @ new siation will be established at Sussex, and it is expec'ed that fu'ly a dozen new cheese factories will be established in the proviuce. Professor Robertson also superintended the four travelling dairies supported by the local gov- ernment. Some four hundred meetings were held which were largely attended by the farmers, and will be continued until the middle of November. In Prince E4- ward Island the development of the indus- try has been equally great. The experi- mental station is at New Per .h, and during the season about 9000 pounds of milk was received per day. *About $7,500 worth of cheese was made, $6,000 of which is for export. Over 1,500 persons visited the station, and the satisfaction expressed was so great that six new cheese factories have been estabiished. In Nova Scotia a dairy station will be established next summer. Prof. Robertson visited the two condensed milk factories established at Windsor and fruro, and reports the product as ex- cellent. Samples have been sent to Eng- land which, he thinks, are equal to the best Swiss condensed milk which is now so largely supplied to Great Britain.

Picrou’s Nata Day.—The annual Scottish gathering under the auspices of the Pictou Amateur Athletic Assoctation, was held on the association grounds at that place yester- day. There was a good attendance of spectators. lt was almost three o'clock before tye athletic sports began. The pole vault was won by L. Macdonald, of Charlotte- town, who vaulted 9 ft. 5in, deteating Mc- Eachern, the champion of the Maritime Provinces, McKachern had a very sore hand which interfered considerably with his work yesterday. His record is 10 ft. 4in. The 100 yards dash was won by D. J. Macdonald, of the Post Office Department, Ch’town, with E. Herritt, of Truro, second and William Edmonds, Charlottetown, third. D. J. Mac donald took second prize for throwing the hammer and putting the shot. The double. scull row/ng race, in which crews representing the South Rad and Hillsborough Clubs were to take part, did not ccme off owing to the water being considered rough. A good many of the events on the programme not haviag been completed up to the time the St. Lawe_ rence lett Pictoa the majority of the Island : athletes remained over till this evening. The steamer left Pictou on return to Charlottetown at 4 o'clock and arrived here about half-past eight last night.

Mr. Charles N. Macneill, son of Archibald MeNeili, Esq , who has been on a short visit to his Island home, left yesterday on return to St Louis, Mo., where he occupies a re- sponsible position ia the effire of the Western Union Telegraph Company. Mr. Maczeill’s many friends in Charlottetown were ple eed to see him looking so hale and hearty.

The widow of the late John Garvie, of Halifax, died at the Old Ladies’ Home, in that city, on Thursday, aged about 89. She was the mother of the late Hon. Wm. Garvie, (who died on December 14th, 1872), and of half a dezen once stalwart sons, all of whom have passed away, except Dr. George B Garvie, who left the province some years ago.

Mr. Gladstone's address, which was read before the Oriental Congress in London, has been hailed as a wondrous proof of the new Premier's energy and industry. The manu. script covers 8,000 words, all in his owa writing. Every extract and reference con- tained in the address was chiefly compiled during the progress of the late general election.

By the death of the Most lev. Dr. John Medley. His Lordship the Bishop of Ontario succeeds to the primacy and presidency of the House of Bishops. He will ho/d the position three months according to the canon law, and will then call the bishops together for an election. This, however, is little more than a formality, as the senisc bishop of the pro- vinze is almost invariably chosen, 1nd Bishop Lewis is now oldest of Canadas Epis- copal rulers. He graduated from Trinity University, Mublin, in 1847 with the degree of B. A., taking the degree of M. A. and B. D. in ‘1848. In the latter year he was made a deacon, and one year later was or-

dained priest of Armagh, Ireland. Coming to Canada ke was honored in 1859 with the title of D: C. L. by Trinity University, Toronto, and in 1862 was given the degree of D. D Ow March 25 of the latter year he was conse- crated bishop in St. George’s Cathedral, this city, by Right Rev. Bishops Fulford, of Mon- treal; Mountain, of Quebec; Strecban, of Tu ronto; Orefyn, ot Huron, and McCio ky, of Mich’zan. His jurisdiction trom that time forth was cemposed of fifteen exs*era counties of Ontario, with the western port of the Nipissing district. Before his c ns cration Dr. Lewis served as priest at Brockville. The population of his diocese is 446 436.
