His Majesty's Illness

The illness o‘ His Majesty the King has

i caused Empire-wide concern. It is at least re-

assuring to note that his ‘condition, up to a late hour last night, was‘reported unchanged, which il interpreted as meaning that he is maintaining his strength following the heart attack suffered last week. It is the sincere hope and prayer of all his loyal subjects that his recovery will be speedy and satisfactory. _

No more signal tribute could be paid to any monarch than the immediate anxiety manifested throughout the Empire, and indeed throughout the world, at- the first hint of His Majesty's illness. The exalted position hE holds of course makes any news concerning him of wide import- ance, but in this case, as on previous occasions, (notably in i925 when he underwent a severe attack of influenza), there is deep concern on personal grounds as well, for no Sovereign in British history has been held in deeper esteem and veneration than the present occupant of the Throne. This was signally shown last year, on the occasion of His Majesty's jubilee, and it is again being demonstrated by the many inquiries received at this office, and no doubt at every newspaper office throughout the Common- wealth, as to the latest bulletins regarding his condition.

"A Health To His Majesty"

Today we recall some of the ringing sent- ences which most appealed to us in His Majesty's Christmas message to his Empire :

“The year that is passing—the twenty-fifth since my Accession-has been to me most mem- orable. It called forth a spontaneous offering of loyaltyb-and may I say of love-which the Queen and Ican never forget. How could I fail to note in all the rejoicing not merely respect for the Throne but a warm and generous remem- brance of the man himself who, may God help him, has been placed upon-it.

“It is this personal link between me and my people which I value more than I can say. ‘It

binds us together in all our common joys and sorrows as when this year you showed your hap- piness in the marriage of my son, and your sym- pathy in the death of my beloved sister. I feel this link now as I speak to you. For I am think- ing not so much of the Empire itself as of the individual men, women, and‘ children who live within it, whether they are dwelling herc at home or in some distant outpost of the Empire. But, since the inside work was begun, this practice has been dis- continued a-nd we now discern pol- jtical partisanship coming to the fore. Of course this is just another instance of the unfair tactics which are being handed out to the people by those who seem to think such things can go on unnoticed.

For instance: Three of the car- penters working in the building have been on this job ever since it was started. Two of them are sin- gle men. One of them has only been in this province a short time, coming hero from the U. S. A. where he was a citizen.
