3 or 4 pounds beef. 8 tablespoons fat. - 1 onion. 3 cloves. 1 bayleaf. 2 tablespoons flour. 1 1-2 tablespoons salt. 1-2 teaspoon/pepper. 2 cups branberrlu, cooked.

1 cup molasses.

Slit three cups of flour with the seasonings and spices. Cream to- gether the sugar and shortening and add the egg. Beat well, and add molasses and vinegar, then the slit- ed dry ingredients. Dissolve the soda in the boiling water and add last of all. If necessary, add more flour to make a soft dough. Stand in a cool place over night. Next day, flour the hands, break of! small bits of dough, roll into balls, place in a butter bak- ing pan and pat into flat cakes (not too thin). Sprinkle with sugar. Bake in a moderate oven for about eight or ten minutes.
