Tue Patriot disputes the statement that the “Government *‘ promptly and fully” reciprucated the action of the United States Congress in making natural products free of duty. What are the facts? A memoran. dum from Washington was received by the Government @n Saturday, the 30th ult.. setting forth that certain products of Canada had been placed upon the free list of the States; on the fullowing Wednesday the Government announced that every one o these products had been placed upon the free list of Canada. If that was not under

Certainly, the Government had in view reciprocal trade in ail the articles on the list, as set forth in clause «nine of the Tariff Act. This fact clearly appeared in the short, irregular discussion, which was raised without notice, by Hon. Peter Mitchell. But, upon consideration, after the Washington memorandum was received, they decided to show their good will and their desire for freer and

BAND OF HOPE~ANNIVERSARY SERVICE!

Tue anniversary service of the Band of Hope, in connection with the above parish, was held in St. Peter's Church yesterday afternoon. The service, at which there was a good congregation, began at 3.15. The long procession, headed by cross bearer and accompanied by Sunday School banner bearer aud the shield bearers of the respec- tive classes, marched from the Schoolroom down the south aisle, and then to their places in the body of the Church, the pro- cessional hymn being ‘‘ Rejoice ye pure in heart.” The Priest Incumbent and the assistant Priest (the President) were pre- ceded by their acolytes, the former wear- ing scarlet cassocks and cottas. The assist- ant Priest, with his acolytes, proceedéd to the sedilia, the Priest Incumbent and acolytes remaining atthe sanctuary gates during the singing of the Story of the Resurrection, at the conclusion of which a lesson wasread fromthe Old Testament Scriptures. About twenty-five new pledges were administered by _ the Priest Incumbent, the candidates kneel- ing before him at the sanctuary gates, while they assumed their vows. Then followed the renewal of their pledges by the old members, which takes place annually. \fter the singing of another hymn an address was delivered by the Rev. Fred E. J. Lloyd, the newlyelected President of the Band of Hope. Mr. Lloyd spoke first to the newly-pledged members, explaining to them in a simple way the importance of their vows and the need there was of con- stant prayer to Almighty God to_ enable them to keep them inviolate. He also pointed to the fact that whereever we read n the: Holy Scriptures of persons having sssumed religious vows for the greater glory of God, we see that they were specially blessed by God for their devotion. He farther reminded the members of the Society that they were a Banp or Hops ; snd, although at the present time when intemperance in the matter of alevholic drinks was so marked and saddening a eature of human life, we were tempted to despair of the future, yeu we should exer- cise the virtue of hope, believing that the despairing man is the losing man and the hopeful man the victor. Lastly, Mr.

loyd urged upon the older persons present the duty never of sayinganything in disparagement of vowsor of temperance work in the presence of their children, whatever views they may hold upon such important subjects. The address, which was delivered extempore, was listened to with much atten- tion by the congregation, and we earnestly hope that it may help to deepen within the hearts of the Band of Hope members a sense of the vast importance of the noble work m which they are engaged. The con- cluding portion of the service was said by the Rev. J. Simpson, who gave the Bene- diction from the Altar. The offering at this service was $55.62, of which sum $27.50 are to be devoted tothe education and support.of an Indian child in Yale, British Columbia. We hope and _ believe that the St. Peter's Band of Hope hasa successful future.

Missionary Sunday

IN THE METHODIST PRINCE STREET CHURCH.

YESTERDAY the anniversary services of the Methodist Suaday School Missionary Society, held in the brick church were of more than ordinary interest. ‘The Rev. M. R. Knight, M. A., preached in the morning in the presence of a large congre- gation, a sermon especially tothe children, taking for his text the words of Christ, ‘* Suffer the little children and forbid them not to come unto me, for of such is the Kingdom of Heaven.” With an eloquence and power which came to the heart of his hearers, the preacher. contrasted the do- mestic and moral condition of the five hundred millions of children and young people living uader the degrading influence of heathenism, with the refinements and happy homes of those who, in Christian lands, had been brought under the elevat- ing power. of the Gospel, and concluded with an earnest appeal that the hindrances should be taken out of the way of their coming to Christ. The discourse . was worthy of the occasion, and gave evidence of a large degree of mental discipline, and a richness of culture, both of mind and heart.

The evening sermon by the Rev. Mr. Shenton was one of the finest effoits we have heard from the lips of that rev. gentle- man. His theme was the ordination and sending forth of the missionaries Barnabas and Saul—their first missivnary tour, their return and the rehearsal success. The discourse, which was full of bright and flashing thought, and inwrought with pictures of beauty, was listened to by a large and attentive congregation, who must have carried away with them vivid impressions of the important and blessed- ness of the missionary enterprise. ~ The afternoon gathering in the body of the lirge church presented a very beautful ‘ppearance, the scholars, numbering over tirve hundred, being grouped in front of the pulpit, parents and friends occupying the remaining seats. After the opening services, conducted by the Rev. Mr. Shen- ton, Mr. W. H. Turner, one of the teach- ers, was called to the chair, and gave a chaste and lively address, paying a loving tribute to the memory of thelateMr. Donald Bears, who was ene of the speakers at the last anniversary. The Secretary, Mr. E. H. Beer, read a report full of interesting figures, and showing the amount raised by the school during the year for the Japan mission to be about $560—the largest of any church in the Dominion except Mon- treal.

The remaining portion of the time was taken up with various exercises. An ex- cellent fifteen minutes address by the Rey. Mr, Knight on ** The Compensations of the Mission Work,” a chorus by a number of boys, followed by one from several girls,

the Brick Church will, in the future, sustain its reputation for the efficiency of its choir.

missionary spirit of the age, and pathetic appeals from

Christian missions and the strong and earnest defenders of the faith in the great crusade against the powers of evil. ;

The Suheciaapinlant told a touching story, illustrating the missiovary spirit as it existed in the school in thé days of his boy- hood, and a few encouraging words from the pastor brought to a close one of the best anniversary meetings of the society that has been held for many years.

Miss Duchemin, with the organ and the choir, rendered some beautiful music, which contributed largely to the interest of the occasion.

Obituary.

DEATH OF (. J. HALEY,

In a neat and beautiful casket, at Souris, awaiting interment, lie the mortal remains of C. J. Haley, of that place, whose spirit passed peacefully away on the morning of the 7th of April, at half-past six.

Mr.- Haley had been suffering from paralysis for over a year, and bore his illness with remarkable patience. He was born in Portland, Maine, in 1835, and came to Souris about twelve years ago, where he since resided until the time of his death. During the greater part of this time he was extensively engaged in the canning busi-

ness, and largely contributed to the business enterprise of the County. Being

of a kind and genial disposition, he made many friends in Souris who sympathize with his bereaved widow in her great sor- row. His remains were interred temporarily in the Protestant cemetery at Souris West to-day, but it is the intention of his widow to have them removed as s0un as navigation opens, to his native home for final inter- ment.

Immigrants. .

The report of the Minister of Agriculture contains many interesting facts. The total number of * immigrants, settlers and im- migrant passengers" who entered Canada last year was 175,579, against 122,591 in 1886 and 105,096 in 1885. These entered Carada as follows: Via the St. Lawrence, 32,749, via Suspension Bridge, 63,477, via Inland ports, 10,297, via Maritime Province ports (Portland, Boston and New York ar- rivals included) 25,880, British Columbia 13,354, entered at Customs Houses with settlers’ goods 29,822. In the Inland ports arrivals are included 5,785 from the United States by the St. Paul, Minne- apolis and Manitoba sailway, American ar- rivals at various agencies 2,413, arrivals at Prescott 753, Port Arthur, 385, and across the frontier west of Gretna 960. The total number of immigrants who stated to agents of the department their intention to settle in Canada was 54,704; those reported with settler’s goods at the Customs houses num- bered 29,822; total immigrant settlers 84, - 526. Thenumber who settled in Manitoba and the Northwest was 21,685. There were exported last year 19,081 horses valued at $2,350,926, cattle 116,490 head, valued at $6,621320, and of sheep 443,628, valued at $1,595,350. The cattle 6xports to Britain were 64,621 heads, ides 35,473 sheep against 64,555 head of cattle and 94,297 sheep in.4886, -There were last fall on the ranches of Alberta 90,000 head of cattle, 8,000 horses and 18,000 sheep.

African Exploration.

The second expedition of Lieutenant Wissmann’ across Africa, has, as might have been expected, resulted in léss discovery than his first and better-known journey, but has thrown . additional light upon the evils wrought by the slave-trade, the extension of which has heitherto more than kept pace with the exteasion of Eurepean influence. Herr Wissmann’s route was from Angola to Luluaburg, a ‘station in the empire of the Muata Yambo. He then descended the Lubi to its confluence with the Sankuru, making an excursioninto the conntry of the Benangongo, Leaving the Sankuru he struck westward through a vast belt of primeval forest inhabited by Batetela and by the dwarfish Watwa, and then passing through the country of the Beneki he reached the Lomanir,~ and arrived at the Arab town of Nyangme, whence he proceeded to the east- ern coast by the new well-known route of Lakes Tanganyika and Nyassa. The country east of the Sankuru was found to be entirely devastated by the slave-trade, powerful native tribes, such as the Bassonge and Bassenge, being the chief offenders, often supported by the slave traders.

Preparing for the End of the World

The Adventists in Ohio are said to be actively preparing for thé end of the world. Both the First Dayers and the Seventh Dayers believe that the present year will witness the crack of Doom, the only differ- ence between them being’that the First Dayers fix the date, while the others simply say that the end is not far distant. Many tradesmen among them have balanced their accounts aud sent out their bills, though, in view of the fact that they can take noth- ing with them out of this world, it 1s some- what difficult to understand why they should take the trouble to make collections. At Richmond, 0., which is a stronghold of the Adventists, they have just erected a beautiful college, and on being asked why they proceeded with such a work when the end of all things temporal is so close at hand, one of their elders replied that it was possible that they might be wrong in their conclusions. In most other forms of belief this would be considered scepticism but the doubts of the Adventists are justified by the fact that they have found them-

selves mistaken on several previous occasions.
