liquor Iieporled Seized On Eskimo

A Canadian -Press despatch from Grand Bank. Newfound. land. dated July 14th. stated that the R. C. M. P. at Grand Bank had advised that they had raided the P.E.I. Government owned supply ship Eskimo and seized contraband liquor from st, Pierre. Police were quoted as statlnz that this was the second time in a year that the Eskimo had been raided for the same reason. and that a charge will be made later.

The Guardian has been inform- ed locally that no officers of the Eskimo, nor any officials of the Crown company, the P. E. .I. In. dustrlal Corporation. which oper- ated the ship. were involved in the seizure..

Apparently the liquor. two quarts and 13 pint flasks. was seized by the R. C. M. P. in the seamen'l quarters. In addition there were a few cartons of cig- arettes bought by the seamen in St. Pierre.

Mr. C. P. Reddall. shipping manager of the Corporation. stat- ed last night that all seamen on the ship have been warned to declare any purchases made at the French ports. A notice to this effect. was posted on the ship's notice board. He also stat- ed that all seamen had been notified that any violations in- volvlng the ship itself would be definitely placed as a responsibil- ity of the individual concerned.

They were also. told that any offences involving fines would re- suit in the Corporation taking any action under the Canada Shipping Act it is entitled to take. This would of necessity be

done to secure recompense for the Corporation. Mr. Reddall pointed out that

the Canadian Press report fall- ed to mention that the first time it was alleged there were contraband goods on board the ship. the same' goods had been properly cleared by customs and declared at a previous port. They were later returned to the own- ers.

PARIS, July 15 '-. (AP)--France displayed new tanks and motorized weapons in a Bastille Day parade Saturday which President Vincent Auriol hailed as affirming the country's "material and moral" re- birth.

In A reply to President Truman's message on the national fete day. the French President asserted that the country is united around the army of the republic.

"I assure you again of our will to make our effort side by side with all the free nations to discourage aggression,” he said.

The two-hour parade of renew- ed French strength - the biggest military show in Paris since the war -- was largely by courtesy of the U. 8. military aid program. But there were enough samples of new French armament production to show that France is pitching in.

Warmest cheers from the crowds thronging the Champs Elysees were for the new 50-ton French tanks with their 100-millimetre guns (there were only three) and the 120-millimetre high speed mobile assault gun (of which there was only one).

National Defence Minister Jules Much has pointed out that these new weapons were only ordered between April and November last year. Prototypes were shown to- day. Production in number will follow.

But most of the 7,000 men in the parade marched in the British bat- tledress they have worn since the end of the war. Even the once-col- orful North African Spahis were in sober khaki and rode light tanks instead of plunging Arab horses.
