DOES THIS MEAN YOU ? Trying to Sleep Makes Some People Wide Awake.
It has just been discovered that many persons have been kept awake by trying to go to sleep. This odd statement is susceptible of proof, acording to Jane Ellis Joy, an authority on insomnia.
By a series of experiments on people whose health bad been seriously impaired by sleepless nights, the remarkable fact was established that the harder a person, lending himself to the experiment, en- deavored to lose consciousness, the more thoroughly awake did he become. Then it became evident that, no matter how strong the will, the mind could not be emptied like a vessel. Successive attempts to make it a blank only aggravated the experimenter. Those who have experi-
| enced the fruitless attempts to induce
slesp by auto-suggestion will readily ap- preciate this fact. As quickly as one thought was banished another succeeded it. Then it was determined to woo Mor- pheus in an entirely new way.
As the mind when awake refuses to be satisfied with nothingness the theory was advanced that it conld be so occu- pied as to actually produce sleep. This was accomplished by a breaking up of the thoughts into words. The thinking faculty which will not rest was exercised with disconnected words, and herein lay the secret of bringing about sleep that was not superinduced by physical or mental fatigue. As is weil known, we think and remember in sentences. The mind is continually making assertions and suggestions—saying something about something or asking questions. The questions are sometimes serious, but more often idle and their answers corre- spondingly valueless, but they keep crowding in until the mental process seems interminable.
By breaking up the thoughts into words and trying to have the words as disconnected as possible, the thoughts gradually give tvay, and the one lending himself to the experiment sinks into a slumber, although a chronic sufferer from insomnia. In this case the first word that came into the mind was ‘“house.’’ Presently another word fol- lowed, but as instructions had been given to let any word bearing any grammatical or associative relation to the first word slip out of the mind without notice that was done. It being found quite possible to do so, although not to banish words entirely.
Then the mind, according to the pre- arranged plan, sought out a word of a different class—‘‘enthusiasm.’’ Now one disconnected word after another came up until the series ran like this: ‘‘House, enthusiasm, Great Britain, walk, twenty, tangible, beyond, superior, Washington,”’ etc. In following out this formula for going to sleep artificially the reader must endeavor to ayoid a succession of names and numbers and all classifications of words, for the obvious reason that such a course appeals to the memory and the imagination, and the would-be sleeper gets to thinking in the regular way, which he is trying to escape doing.
It will be found as the disconnected ideas flow on in your mind that you will gradually observe yourself taking a mild interest in the disjointed procession. Then will follow a loss of the agitating self-consciousne:s, succeeded by a pas- sive stats which does not attempt to combat the grotesque parade of words.

INSECT CRIMINALS.
Brigand Bees Live by Robbery and Violence.
Almost every form aad vayiety of human crime is common with insects. Cases of theft are noticed among bees. Buchner in his ‘‘Physic Life of Ani- mals,” speaks of the thievish bees, which in order to save themselves the trouble of working, attack well-stocked hiyes in masses, kill the sentinels and
the inhabitants, rob the hives and ;
carry off the provisions. After re- peated enterprises of this description, they acquire a taste for robbery and violence; they recruit whole com-
panies, which get more and more
numerous; and finally they form regular colonies of brigand bees.
But it isa still more curious fact that these brigand bees can be pro- duced artificially by giving working bees a mixture of honey and brandy to drink. The bees soon take a delight in this beverage, which has the same disastrous effects upon them as upon men; they become ill-disposed and irri- table, and lose all desire to work; and finally, when they begin to feel hungry, they attack and plunder the well-supplied hives.
There is one variety of bees—the Sphecodes—which lives exclusively upon plunder. According to Marchall, this variety is formed of individuals of the Halyates species, whose organs of nidification are defective, and which have gradually developed into a sepa- rate variety, living almost exclusively by plunder.
They may be thus said to be an ex- ample of innate and organic criminal- ity among insects, and they represent what Prof. Lombroso calls the born. criminals—that is, individuals whicla are led to crime by their own organi« constitution.

A strange incident recently occurred in Australian waters. The Brigantine Handa | Isler arrived at Svdtey Harbor from New Zealand, presenting the appearance of having been struck by a heavy sea, as she was much damaged amidships. vessel shook from etem to stern. The second whale, fortunately, did not ram the ship, but diyed jast before reach- ing the Handa Isler, and passed under the keel. The brigantine was badly damaged by the collision, and the whale must have been terribly injured, as the sea around was speedily dyed with its blood, and the animal did not rise after striking the ves- cel. The well of the ship was at once sounded, and it was discovered that the water was making at the rate of a foot an hour, which, in a vessel so deeply laden, was a verv serious matter, Sydney being 220 miles distant. Examination showed that there was a large dent inthe side where the whaie’s head had butted in the planking and frame work. As the water gained on the pumps, the deck cargo was

Mr. W. J. Rainbow, an Aust. *alian wnaturalist,gives the foliowing descri, yiion of the large bird-entrappinz spiders’ of his country, which we quote from the American Naturalist: ‘‘Representati, © of this genus abound in tropical an t subtropical regions. Their webs are com- posed of two kinds of silk, one yellow, exceedingly viscid and elastic, the other white, dry and somewhat brittle. The latter is used for the framework of the web, the guys and radii, and the former for the concentric rings.
