To the Beiter of the Kaaminer. Six,—-Pursuaat to public novice, a large

and influential meeting of the electors of the first and second districts of King’s

| County was held on Monday, 18th inst., in

the Court House, Souris East, to consider the cenduct of their representatives in the Legislative Councii during the recess, Mr. James MeQuaid in the chair.

After the object of the meeting had been explained by the chairman, he called on soine of the representatives to make some remarks.

The Hon. Simeon Bolger, in the eourse of a lengthy speeeb, explained his conduct as a member of the Leygisiative Comneil during a period of seven years. and remarked tha: in his epinion many of the hon. members who had pledged themselves to their con stituents to abolish the Legisiative Couneil were not sincere, and had not redeemed these pledges. He had ea all oceasions endeavered to carry out the wishes of his constituents, and was prepared to receive any censure at their hands, }f they believed he had avt kept those views sacredly before him, and acted in accordance with them. He opined that the hon. members who have not voted in faver ef the commonly callea ‘*Dynamite Bill,” have found their seats in the Legislative Council too comfortable to vacate them for some time to come, and that they imagined they were safely in- atalled, at least, until the end of periods ; but that if Le were to judge from the various expressions of feeling on the matter he had lately heard, those honorable taembers would tind there was still some truth in the vld proverb, ‘* mu/ta infer pocula cudunt,” aud would see the cul, sweet shades of retirement staring them in the face. After touching apon local mat- ters, the hon. gentleman resumed his seat amid ieud applause.

J. C. Underhay, Esq., M. P. P., in a neat speech, said he thought he had ob- tained his election with others, on the strict understanding that he would support the abviition of the Legislauve Oowicr; that the entire country wished it, bat on aecount ef the eourse some hon. mew bers had chosen to pursue, he saw no prospect vi the Couneil bemg asbolished for at least five years to come. Alter speaking upow the Assessment Act and other measures, he answered various questions ou local matters put to him.

The Hon. L. Kicknam, who had just ar- rived, was called upon to address the meeung ; upon whieh he produced the Examineg, read a notice of the meeting, aud, seeming at a loss to understand its ob- ject resumed his seas. Alter some ex- pianatious trom the Chairman and others, the hon. gentioman stated that he failed to sew that tae Dynawite Bill would abolish the Legisiative Council. In his opinion, it simply meant a general election, and was brought up tw throw dust in the eyss of the country and of some of the representatites. if the Bill was passed a general eiectiun would eusue immediately, which would cost the eountry at ieast twenty thousand dollars, whereas the eXponse et he Legisiative Council tor one year would be but 36,000. ‘Lherviore he opposed the bil en tie score of econowy. John MeLean, Keq., then made some re- marks, in the course of which he said, he considered the Hon. Bir. Kickham, some- what inconsistent. He tad iately the plea- sure of reading a speech of twe hon, geutle- man’s printed in pamphiet form, #hich had been handed to him, and tie last words of that speech were to the effect that the country was crying out for tne abolition ot the Legislative Council. Yet in the tace of his own statements, the hon. gentleman had voted against a measure having that object ip view.

Good Old Age.

Two remarkable cases of longevity, in the persous of husband and wite, have latey fallen under our netice. Kesiding on the Maipeque Koad, net many miles frum Char. lottetown, are ioho Meikie, aged xis &TY-¥IVE (95), and his wife, Mary, aged \INBTY-! Wo (92) years. Mr. Meikie was bero Rear Berwick un-Tweed, im August. 1755. In the year [~02, when Napvieon Bouaparte was takin, active measures f r his long-threatened mva sion of Britain, levies of all young men Capa ble of bearing arms were made throu, hout the kingdom. Yeung Meikle, then in his 17th year, joined the army ef Royal Keseives, + ling. im tae words of the ly rie of that day, “te bare his bosom for the glorious strife.”

He suba-quently exchanged ito the Gist Regiment of Foot, and while that corps was statioved in Ireland, im 1512, he married his

The banishment of Napeleon to Eiba, in 1814, oceasioned what is known as the first peace. The long straggle being then con- sidered over, measures were taken to rednoe the army, and an option was given te many either to complete their term of enlistment-or be diseharged. Mvikle was among the number who chese the latter course, and after twelve yeers’ service t his king, be ebtained his diseharge in the year beiore W ateriov.

The werthy couple emigrated to this Island in 1543, with their nive children, the eldest of «how is now in his 68th year, aud himself a grandfather. .

With one exception there bas been no dea’ h in the family since 153%.

They both still preserve an extraordinary vitality, and the erect stature of the eid gentleman yet bears evidence of his early wilitary trating. :

The treatment received by the people of this Provinee at the hands of Mr. tavies, will not readily be forgotten. Tne Maine Law.

To the Editor of the Examiner.

Dear Siz,—farough yeur columns and others we glean omineus items of reports by the Commission sent into Maine by the Globe to investigate the workings of the Maine Liquor Law. Portland, the largest city in the Biate, has been tirst selected in which to epen the investigation. The Com- missioners seem to have wale the wonder fui discovety—a fact well known te every friend of the Maine Liquor Law—that the law is more or jess openly as well as secret ly violated. This discovery seems to be heralded with a flourish of trampets, on a par with the joyful exclamations of the wise boy, whan ha discovered the tongs at the kitehen tire place !

As I have already said, well-wishers of the Maine Law have been long aware that in perhaps one-fourth of the larger towns of Maine, the Law is violated—just in propertion to the venality, incapacity, or indifference of town «fficials. In the re- waining three fourths of the State the Law is respected

1 am aware that many argue that be- cause the Law is violated it is a dead letter in Maine. For one who lived in Maine during the firet twelve years of the ex- istence of the Law, I to add my testimony te its efficiency. voted for the Law—that is by voting for a Temperance Representative to the Legislature that en- acted the Law—and the town has ever since sent Temperance Representatives to the Legislature, whe have, by the instrue- tions of their constituents, avd by their own sense of what was for the public good, have always voted for inereasing the stringen y aud consequent efficiency of the law. When I look back tothe years pre- vious to the enfureement of the Maine law—at the numerous grogshops of ali grades; at the old and the young who used to visit them; at the wisery and

glaring to admit of failure on the part of the law. Of course the law was violated ; what law ever passed on a statute book was not? ‘* Old soakers” would have liquor at any cost, They would descend to all mean subterfuges te obtain the coveted article ; and in all communities there are those who, for the sake of money, will violate all law, hamav and divine. But the great and lasting good aecemplished by the law was, aud is, that the young were and are pre- vented from acquiring a taste for intoxica- ting drinks. Before the law, the young as weil as the old came in contact with liquor, ‘and that the eontaet is dangerous all will admit. It is a pretty well established tem- perance axiom, that if you keep young people from acquiring a taste for intoxica- ting drinks in their teeus, they rarely in after lite become drunkards, or even drinkers of intoxicants.

Whatever the final report of the commis- sion may be, | venture te say that the tens of thousands of methers and wives through- out the State, whose sons and husbands have been prevented from possibly beoom- ing drunkards by the Maine law, will not have been interviewed, but will bless the law and deprecate any attempt to throw deubt on its eflicacy er efficiency.

The liquer interest everywhere is wealthy and powerful. For thirty years it has been endeavoring to stamp out the Law in Maine, Portland has been the one great centre esyecially used to operate against the Law. All means have been resorted te by opponents in and out of the State, to so violate the Law in Portland as to throw ebloguy on the enactment; and of the cor- poral’s guard of Representatives who an- pually ginove and vote for the annulling of the Maine Law, the larger portion are fron Pertland.

It is someting odd that the oppenents ef the Maine Law always point to violations as so many arguments against its efficiency; but they failto deride or denounce laws against gambling, theft, houses of ill fame, &c., althongh these laws are continually being vielated. Why temperance laws are bad because they are not respected by the low and the venal, and laws against vice and immorality are good although equally violated by the vicious, the opponents of temperance laws fail to tell, or at least ex- hibit some inconsisteny thereabout.

Since the above was written, I have seen some of the lettera in the (lobe from the Commission, and must say that the balance of evidence is in favor of the utility and benefit of the Maine Law even in Portland. The letters quite emphatically show this to be the fact. Yet portions are copied in many papers which would lead the general public te believe that the Maine Law is a fraud, and that it is not, aud cannot be, enforeed in the lan | of its inception.

In speaking of these who violate the law

and who came under the observation of the Commission in their nocturnal peregrina- tions, one letter says ‘* They would not be any better in any respect, supposing they had ‘‘ free rum.” They are people who will break any law, which comes in the way of their evil courses, and they are the same class that in Toronto buy ten drinks at un- licensed groggeries when they take one at licensed establishments. * * * I do not think that the moral tone of the com- munity can be in any way damaged by the exiStence of these dens of viee. None but the mest brutal and callous could as a mat- ter of choice, by any possibility, spend either time or money in them, and they can only serve as resorts fer the most irredeem- ably vicious.” The letters are most interesting reading. They deserve to, and no doubt will, have a large circulation. And they have their comical side too. The capacity of the Com- missioners for swallowing oysters and iin- bibing lager beer appears to be enormous. Every where they went, they treated the crowds, and were treated in return, and the quantity of solids and liquids they put themselves *‘ outside” of is astounding.

Cardigan Ferry.

Ir must be gratifying to the public at large, and the people of this section in par- ticular, to learn that a subsidy of 31,500 per year for three years has been granted for Ferry Service on the Cardigai® River. The members for Georgetown and Cardigan have reason to congratulate themselves upen the success which has crowned their efforis to obtain justice for their con- atitnents; and the Government and their supporters in both branches deserve the lasting gratitude of the people for having carried this measure through, despite the Opposition members of the Council. Had it not been fer the ubstructive policy of Laird and his allies, the grant weuld have been, as the Government desired, for five years; but it is the opinion of all who are able to judge, that the difference will not materially affect the end in view, asthe Ferry will be almost if not altogether self- sustaining at the end of three years.
