started. When within about 2,000 yards of the kopjes the enemy opened fire with their rifles and we were order- ed to lie down until the artillery shelled the hill. This they did to perfection. After they were in action about three- quarters ofan hour the Boer guns opened fire in our rear and we at once

saw our transport was in danger, so our guns faced our rear to protect them and atthe same timean order was

given forthe transpert to retire on the double to our left. Several shells landed among the waggons but did

not explode, and a good job it was for ourmen they didnot. Just as the transport started off a party of about 200 Beers came flying inthe direc- tion of it and we thought fora while it was all day with our transport. But our artillery got the range in about two shets and soon the Beers were retiring on the gallop. Then the Boers turned their attention to us and started their heavy guns in our direction. The first few shells we did net mind as they were not very close to us, but the next one impressed every Canadian as it landed right in our midst. We soon got the order to advance on the kopje and. it was then we gotit in

It was about the only shell that burst, and it it were not for the fact that they did not explode I am afraid there would be few left to tell the tale, for shells fell around every one of us and many of our boys were knocked off their feet. Some ofthe Island boys were knocked in theair about five feet, and we did not expect ever to see them again. But strange as it may seem none of them were hurt, and my statemen can be backed up by every one who was present. Notwithstanding all the shell fire we were ordered to advance and take the kopje. lt seemed to me to be a hard order 1.0 a - vance on a kopje with the Boers.on tu} and shells behind, but we sel
