had often enjoyedthe glories of Atlantic sunsets, who now walk iu white robee by tue banke of the river of life. Amid grow- ing darkness we reach: Codroy river where we land @ party of auglers, goivg for a week’s fishing,—among them, Judge Prowse, the veteran historianof Newfound- Jand, who looks as youzg as hedid in our early youth, when, from tbe magisterial] beoch, he was the terror of evil doers, especially of small boys. He wears his years well, and ie as Keen a sportsman as ever, though, as he puts it, practically a dead man, pensioned off by the Govern- meot. Alas that governments usually find pensioners very much alive! So may the judge long remain. The flash of the light at Cape Ray reminds us that we should now, did the light permit, have a view of the long Table Mountain 1700 feet high wb ch terminates in the well known Cape. We recall its look thirty years ago, from the deck of the little schooner in wnica we tried unsuccessfully to overhaul a damaged submarine cable, stretching from this point to Cape North, C. B. Keeping close to the shore our train ronnds the South weetern corner of Newfoundland, and, running a short distance east, we fiod ourselves in the well sheltered and capa- cious harbor of Portau Basque, Ere we leave our comfortable train we should oot forget to note that we have enjoyed an excellent dining carall along the route, where appetizing viands were served up regularly and that the attends ance, both hereand in the sleeping car, was all that could be desired. By half past eleven p.m.,we were all safely on voard the “Bruce” andi steam out into the crim waters of Calbo: Strait en route to Sydney. The night is charming with hardly a breath of wind and the moon shiaes brightly upon the unruffled waters as we speed ou our, way. By seven next morning we are safely moored to the pier at North Sydney,and afier a comfortable breakfast we eay good bye to our New- foundland friends, and by nine o’clock are on the Intercolonial on our way home, afier three weeks of such real enjoyment as rarely falls to one’s Jot, carrying with us most delightful memories of weather, scenery, ‘and above ai! of the unbounded kindness and hospital ‘y of the good peo- ple of Newfoundland.

W hat is to be the future of Newfound- land? Plainly, if progress is to be made, there must be a change from the conditions that have prevailed in the past. Valuable as her fisheries may be they cannot support even the present population muca less provide for an increase. The construction of the railway has prov. ded work for a large number and its imaintenance wil! necessitate a large stalf. Today Mesers Reid have an army of nearly 2000 employ~- ed in al! departments of their work. Agri~ culture,tbough it'may be very greatly extended, is not likely to become a re- rource of the country, and it will,be many years before the colony can _ be- come independent of outside sup» plies even in the matter of roots and hay. Mining aod miverals seem to promise most. V«ry little trace of gold has yet been discovered, but silver is known to exist both in ts native state, and associated with other metals. Copper in various forms is abundant. Iron ores of all kinds are wideiy distributed, lead oc- eurs frequently, and nickel is found in many places, and has been developed in workable quantity at Tilt Cove. Besides these, marbles, white, black and | variegated, limestone, barytes, kaolin and | brick clays, roofing slate, granite, whet~ stones, asbestos, petroleam, gypsum and building stone of a}! des riptions are known toexist. In conversation with Mr. W. D. Reid, who is acting as manager for his father, be informed us (hat they were now engaged in organizing systematic search for mineral deposits. Such a step cannot fail to add largely to our knowledge of the mineral wealth of the Ie\and.

opened up by the railway and“Bruce.” The salmon and jobsters of Newfoundland are unrivalled, and the winter codfishing of the Western shore has long been known as producing the finest fixh taken anywhere on the Island. Not on y will the American and Canadian markets be open to enter- prizing Newfoundland, but Mr. Reid dis- cussed with us the problem of placing live lobsters on the British market. Whatever else the railway aod rapid tri-weekly communication with the continent may do, it will certainly infuse new life into the ancient colony. Already the voice of the commercial traveller is heard more loudly and constantly in the land, tourists are including Newfoundiand in their routes, and everything points to improvement. Political conditions are uncertain. The debt is heavy, amounting in round num- bers toabout twenty millions of dollars, say $100 per headof population. This, of course, includes all debts provincial, muni- cipal, etc. This heavy bur- den constitutes &D almost iatolerable drain upon the revenue; and the problem before Newfoundland states- men is how to deal with it. However

be, and, so far as our own opinion goes such a union is most desirable from both sides of the question, this large debt constitutes a great difficulty. The only other possible outlook seems to be reduc- ing Newfoundland to the condition ofa Crown colovy. J

THEY LIKE THE ARMY.

Wasuincroy, Aug. 18—The war depart ment has been trying to ascertain the wishes of the troop? as to being mustered out, it being the object to accomodate the troops so far a3 poesible. Up to the prea- ent time it looks as if all the volunteers wanted to remainand the mustering will prove to be by an army order. Infor- mation received at the department indi- cate thatthe desire toremain in the ser vice is not corfined to the officers, but that the rank and file wish to continue in the guvercoment service. The department will waituntil all ieformation possible is ob- tained, when, if no troops desire to return to their homes, selections in the best judgment of the officers will be made. The troops when niustered out will be transported totheir homes.

Ships Coming North.

Wasnmixetox, Aug. 19.—The naval fleet in southern waters is being rapidly moved north and the naval orders issued today show tbat no less than 18 warships, mainly of the small auxiliary type, were ordered yesterday from Key West to Fort Monroe.

It is said that William Savage, one cf Dewey’s sailors, found a considerable quantity of liquor at Cavite the day after the sinking of the Spanish fleet, and made such use of it that when found by hia su periors he was only able to utter one word —“‘Hurrab!” The subsequent court- martial sentenced him to fifteen days in chains, but when the finding of the court was passed up to Admiral Dewey he wrote ou it: The proceedings of the court are approved, the sentence is diesaproved, and the accused, William Savage, 1s ordered re~ turned to his post in consideration or the glorions victory won by the fleet under my command,
