DIVISLONS. Divisions are reported in the camp of the Opposition, and it is certain that its supporters in the Press are at sixes and sevens on the question of the Canada Pa- cific Railway Contract. The Montreal Herald, the Quebec Chronicle, the Corn- wall (Ont.) Freeholder, the Winnipeg Free Press, and L’ Hvenment—all strong support- ers of the Grit Party—are all out in favor of the Contract. The editors of these able journals regard the contract from the point cf view of the public interest ; and they see that the opposition of their party lead- ers to the contract is against the public interest.

Tue concert at the opening of the Christ- mas Tree, at the Convent de Notre Dame,

on Tuesday evening, was quite a successful and interesting affair.

The programme, though very short, was ecxellently and tastefully rendered, and all the performers acquitted themselves so creditably that it would be invidious to make distinctions. The following was the programme :-—-

Tue St. John Telegraph is in error in saying that ‘‘it is not at all un- usual for the Island to be without a mail for three, four, or five days.’ The ‘‘ Nor- thern Light” has crossed to and from Pic- tou nearly every day this winter ; and we receive the Halifax morning papers on the evening of the day of publication. We re- gret that St. John papers do not, under the present arrangement, come 80 now ; but they cannot come sooner under any arrangement that can be made until such time as we have railways to the Capes and a ferry between them. The ‘* Northern Light” does well enough in open water. It is only when she comes tothe ice that she sticks.

We learn that on the report of the Com- missioner who investigated the charge pre- ferred against him last summer, the services of Mr. Wm. Mitchell, as Agent of the De- partinent of Marine and Fisheries in this Island have been dispensed with and that Artemas Lord, Esq., has been appointed in his stead. It will be remembered that the charge was that of using a vessel, of which he was owner or part owner, in the service of the Department.

THe port of Moncton is still open. Give us a steamer fitted out for the icefields, like a sealer, and Charlottetown barbar would still be accessible, and commerce conld still be carried on.

Mr. Buaxe has not offered an aimend- ment to the resolutions submitted by Sir Charles Tupper anent the Canade Pacific Railway Contract ! What's the inference !

Sin,—The sad accident that occurred Tuesday in the falling of Messrs. Wright & MeNutt’s new brick building, was only the fulfillment of the predictions respecting the said building, not only while it was in the course of erection, but since it has been used as a warehouse for flour and grain. It sould only have been intended for the stor- ing of brooms, buckets, tubs, or such like light articles. I have been living in town since the great fire, and have often observed the insecure mode of erecting buildings here, especially since the three storey buile- ings are now becoming so fashionshle. | have heard that our worthy City Mayor, some six years ago, made some move to get a suitable person appointed fora build- ing inspector for the city. But nothing was done ingetting a person so appointed. I would suggest to have a committee of three suitable persons appointed as soon as practicable for the safety of life and prop- erty. Ido not believe in leaving matters of such paramount importance to one per- son to decide on such important busi- ness. Please insert the above.

A New Fish that is being Intro- duced into American Waters.

The State Fish Commission,of Michigae, are going extensively into the raising of German carp, @ fish at present hardly known in America. It is probably of Asiatic origin, and has been known to the Chinese for thousands ef years. It is found in lakes and rivers, prefers still waters, and feeds on aquatic plants, worms, ete.; in fact it will eat almost anything in the vegetable line. Cabbage leaves, potatoes, onions, and grain of any kind are especially palatable to the carp. It is remark- able for its fecundity, 700,000 eggs hav- ing been found in a fish of moderate size. Their growth is very :apid, some that were imported to this country weighing over nine pounds at the age of three-and a-half years. The carp is also noted for its longevity, and had been known te attain the patriarchal age of 200 years. They are very tame and slug- gish, and possess no attraction for the angler. Carp are reinarkably tenacious of life; in Europe they are brought to market alive, and at the end of the day, if any re- main unsold, they are put in water again, They can be kept in the cellars during the winter, wrapped in wet moss, and fed on bread and milk, In short they are a sert of piscatorial swine, and will thrive in waters in which other fish cannot live. In the pond the carp gees into winter quarters by sticking his nose 'down into the mud, and remaining standing on his head with his tail erect, until spring comes again.

The people, under his advice, arose in their might and burned all the notes of the bank. Theresult of the insane sacrifice was that the bank was stronger than ever. This will be the result of the present agitatien. No one wie wishes well to Ireland can fail to grieve at the success of men like Biggar and Parnell in thwarting the benevolent aims of ien like Gladstene and Bright. They may sue- ceed, and prebably will, in overthrowing the government or at least in paralyzing its policy in Ireland. What then?
