and flew across the road. At that time of the year neither of us had the time to stalk our "quarry", but we still keep an eye peeled, just in case ...!

So here we are, sitting atop the first ridge of hills above Wood Islands, with "banana—belt" weather, a southern slope, lots of trees and our feeder outside. Over the past month we've been watching three crows feed on some corn we left in one of the gradens. We still hear a robin we first sighted on 17th December, and see Black—capped Chickadees, a Downy Woodpecker, 26 Bluejays and 14 Evening Grosbeaks (one female has only one leg). Now andthmi we pull our heads back as a Rough—Legged hawk comes in to snap a Bluejay on the wing. In one afternoon it snapped up three jays.

For approximately ten dollars a winter we are entertained and educated by the birds on and near our feeder. This winter, for the first time since we've been here, we have a flock of 54 Snow Buntings feeding on the weedseeds in the field directly below the house. This Spring.will have its element of sadness as we know we won't see the beautiful Bald Eagles, but we'll be watching for those flights of Canada Geese "Veeing" their an over the house, and for the wonder of the Peregrine Falcons who‘ stop nearby on their way North, just a single pair but so encouraging! It's time for some more seed on the feeder, so I

best go and keep an eye peeled for further adventures with the birds in Mount Vernon.

Bird Collecting on Prince Edward Island

The birds in the following list were collected under a permit from Dr. W. Earl Godfrey, Curator of Ornithology, National Museum of Canada. The purpose of this collecting was to expand the list of his Birds of Prince Edward Island, National Museum of Canada Bulletin No. 132 (1954). The skins unless otherwise stated are in the National Museum of Canada. Subspecific determination was also made by Dr. Godfrey. Birds were collected at Mt. Stewart unless otherwise stated.

Clapper Rail

On Dec. 21, 1957, one was found dead in a trap at Mt. Stewart Marsh (St. Andrews area). W. Earl Godfrey identified it as Rallus longirostris crepitans.

Common Eider I One was taken at Mt. Stewart Marsh, Oct. 8, 1967. W. Earl Godfrey identified it as Somateria mollissima dresseri. ‘

Lesser Scau On May 7, 1967 I collected an adult male in Mt. Stewart Marsh. It was given (I think) to P.E.I. Wildlife Division.

Long-eared Owl

On Oct. 1, 1959 one was shot on Cherry Hill at Mt. Stewart Marsh and given to me. On Oct. 11, 1967 I found a fresh specimen in the same locality. It is in my own collection.

On May 19, 1968 a nest with three eggs was found on Rustico Island. I sent a nest card to the Maritimes Nest Records Scheme.

Lapland Longspur On Sept. 27, 1964 one was collected from a flock of three at Savage

Harbour.

American Robin

One collected on April 8, 1959 was Turdus migratorius nigrideus. Another collected on Jan. 8, 1967 was also T. migratorius nigrideus. Both birds were identified by W. Earl Godfrey.
