Stipendiary Magistrate's Court.

Frank Began, Patrick McTague and Peter Keenan, arrested on a warpant for assaulting John McGuirk and taking a bottle of whiskey and forty cents in cash from him, were remanded until Monday next, owing to the absence from the city of the prosecutor. They were released on bail.

An Eye to Business.

Hatirax, March 3.

A notorious den on Upper Water Street, kept by Kate Davidson, was raided at midnight by City Marshal Cotter, Ald. Lyons, Inspector McKasey and half a dozen police sergeants, and a quantity of whiskey confiscated. This is the third raid made ‘in a short time. It is said that the names of a score of city bloods were obiained, and these will be witnesses ; also two members of the Legislature.

At five o’clockthis morning a well-known city lawyer went up to the den, kicked in the door, got inside and smashed the furni- ture. He was arrested and jailed. To- morrow is expected to be an exciting day in police circles. The lawyer and another man are charged with smashing furniture at the house while drunk, and disorderly con- duct, assaulting the police, and using pro- fane language.

Lieut. Valentine Young, an ofticer be- longing to the Royal Artillery, is missing, and it is believed he is drowned. He went to Sambro yesterday, and this morning his gun and overcoat were found in a dory in {which he had gone out to shoot sea gulls, (but nothing has since been seen of the officer. :

Last evening Sir Charles Tupper gave a dinner to twenty-four gentlemen in the Commons restaurant. Among those pre- isent were Hons. Messrs. Sullivan and Ferguson, of the P. E. Island Government, and representative senators and commoners. The arbitrators appointed to settle the dispute claims of the Canadian Pacific Company against the Government, left yesterday for the Pacific.

Lt.-Col. O’Brien, of the 35th Batt., mem- ber for Muskoka, will probably receive command of the Wimbledon teanr.

Fatal Avalanches.

Lonpon, March 4.

The hamlet of Trasguera, at the foot of Sinpton Mountain, and another hamlet in | Bine Valley were destroyed by avalanches ‘at the latter place. Five persons were ; killed.

Rome, March 4. The bodies of over two hundred victims of the recent avalanches in the Italian Alps have been recovered.

Murder Will Out.

Baneor, Me., March 4.

In the trial of Dayid Stain and Oliver Cromwell, for the murder of Cashier Bar- ron, of the Dexter Bank, ten years ago, the |jury last night rendered a verdict of guilty lof murder in the second degree. The evidence against them was wholly circum- stantial.

A meeting of the St. John Forwarding and Trade Promoting Association was held last night. J. DeWolfe Spurr presided, and there were present Hon. Dr. Pugsley, J. H. Parks, Rev. Geo. Bruce, A. F. Coombs, R. B. Humphrey, Jas. Pender, W. E. Vroom, Barton Gandy, T. Bent and others.

Hon, Dr. Pugsley said Mr. Coombs had waited upon several members and stated that he had some information with reference to the trade of the West Indies which it might be desirable to bring before the association.

The secretary stated that he had called upon Murdock, Dickson & Co., of Toronto, while in that city. They were ready to act as the agents of the association.

On motion of Mr. Humphrey this firm were appointed the agents of the assvcia- tion in Toronto.

Mr. Coombs being called upon, spoke at considerable length on thetrade of the West India Islands and British Guiana. Four years ago he had, at the uest of same of the merchants of P. E. Island, yisited @itawa and secured the signatures of sume fiity members of Parliament to a petition asking the Dominion Government to give a subsidy to a line of steamers to run be- tween Canada, the West Indies and South America, Nothing came out of it however, and last September he went to Toronto and called upon prominent merchants with a view of establishing a company to be called the West Indies and Southern Transporting Company. A petition had been circulated and sent to the pest- master general asking him to urge the Gov- ernment to grant a subsidy for a liye of steamers to carry a fortnightly mail be- tween this country and the West Indies, etc. Mr. Coombs then read the prospectus of the company heisendeavoring taform, and stated that he proposed to run two steam- ers between St. John and Kingston, Ja., Barbadoes, Trinidad and British Guiana. The company would also charter sailing packets to run between Canada ahd Australia if freights offered. He went on to show that the steamers would reach the West Indies about nine days after they left St. John, which was about one-third the time consumed by a sailing vessel in making the voyage. He next enumerated the articles imported into and exported from the islands. Canada did very little trade with them as compared with the volume of their trade with the United States. The reason was simply this, that we had no direct means of. communication with the islands. With a line of steamers running regularly we could do a large business with them. While the shipments from New Brunswick were very small, those from P. E, Island were consideyable, particularly of oats, which were nearly as large as those of the United States, to the West Indies. The estimated cust of running steamers of

000 per annum; earning, if full cargoes could be obtained at present rates, from New York to West Indies, $780,000. In speaking of the articles our people could ship to the West Indies Mr. Coombs paid

West Indies if a company was established | to operate such a line, provided the govern- | ment gave a subsidy.
