The General Conference. The Genera! Conference of the Methodist Church meets to-day in Montreal. It is the great and only legislative body of the Methodist Church of Canada. This is the second meeting since its foundation. Some important questions will come up for final settlement. : The representation to the general confer- ence is, as the Halifax Herald explains, different from that to the annual conference. There it is the church or circuit which forms the basis of representation. The ger- eral conference secures its members from these annual conferences. They are elected at the conference immediately preceding the meeting of the general conference, and the size of the annual conference is the basis of representation. For every ten ministerial ties to the annual conference that body elects one ministerial and one lay delegate tothe generalconference. The jurisdiction of the general conference comprises the whole of what is generally known as British North America. Its boundaries extend from St. John’s, Newfoundland, in the east, to the far away city of Victoria in the west ; from the line of forty-five to the frozen shores of the Arctic. Within this great ecclesiastical province there are eleven sub-provinces or conferences. They are as follows, with the annexed represen- tation to the Conference :—

The presiding officer of the general con- ference is a general superintendent elected for eight years. According to the present rules there must be two of those superinten- dents, but one office is now vacaut through the death of the late Dr. Williams, and it will be a question discussed at the present session, whether one superintendent is not enough. The Rey. Dr. Carman is the present general superintendent and will preside at the coming deliberations of the conference. The general superintendents are members and ex-officio chairmen of all standing committee and have a casting vote only. They are not stationed, but travel and look after the connectional interests. Associated with them in the work of the pastoral supervision is a special general conference committee of twelve members. The jurisdiction of the body is wideand far- reaching. It only has full power to make rules and regulations for the church under the following limitations and re- strictions :
“Tt shall not revoke, alter or change any article of religion, nor establish any new standards or rules of doctrines contrary to our existing and established standards of doctrine. It shall not destroy the plan of our itinerant system. It shall not make any changes in the general rules of oursociety. It shall not do away with the privilege of our ministers and probatitioners for the ministry, or trial by a committee, and of an appeal; neither shall it do away with the privileges of our members of trial before the society, or by a committee, and of an appeal. The principal subjects to be discussed are the following: University federation ; the relation of the laity to the various church courts and more particularly the stationing committee ; the quadrennial revision of the discipline ; the question whether a successor should be appointed to the late Rev. Dr. Williams, one of the general superinten- dents, there being a strong feeling that for efficiency and economy one superintendeut is enough. Then will come up the per- petual discussion respecting the pastoral term. Concerning this very live question the clerical delegates in general favor an extension of the term, while the majority of ministers throughout the country and the laity favor the present term of three years.

Y. M. C. A. Hall was well filled last evening. Rey. D. Sutherland occupied the chair. Rev. M. J. Gordon read an appro- priate chapter in.the New Testament, and Rev. John Read offered up prayer.
Mrs. Trenholm gave an interesting sketch of the rise and progress of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union. It began, she said, in a Presbyterian meeting house, and now the world is girded by a chain of white ribbon. There are, she intimated, at present about three hundred thousand women engaged under the auspices of the Union in the work of Christianity and Tem- perance. She said that they had, at times, warm debates in their meetings, but she had never heard a remark that was person- ally offensive. The women of the Union are for the must part good housekeepers as well as good workers for the cause in which they have been forced to engage. Men have no idea of what it costs women to take a stand in public. But women have been compelled to the course the union has taken. They are fighting in defence of their dearest interests. A good deal had been said about the inferiority of women, but the order of nature, she had observed, had been progressive from grass up to women. Man’s work is a great one, but women’s work --attending to the household, preparing the food by which man lives and nursinn up the rising generation—is she contended, a far greater and more import- ant work. Yet, judged by their conduct, many men love a dirty old black pipe and a bottle of whiskey better than they do the women. Men fail to comprehend the value to women of the Kingdom of Home. It is said that a woman should reverence her husband ; but in respect to drinking men this cannot be done by any intelligent and sober woman. Some men must be re- formed before they can be reverenced. After depicting the main features of the organization of the W. C. T. U., Mrs. Tren-

Maritime Press Association.
Reports of Our Visitors.
The Halifax Herald has another long re- port upon the visit ofthe Maritime Press Association to this Province. It declares that ** No party of visitors could desire to be treated with more courtesy and kindness than were the members of the Maritime Press Association by the press, Mr. Uns- worth, superintendent of the P. E. Island railway, aad the leading citizens of Char- lottetown, Summerside and Souris.” An interesting feature of the drive around the suburbs of Charlottetown was, it says, the visit to the pottery of Mr. Hornsby, situat- ed some two and a half miles from the city. Mr. Hornsby formerly carried on business in Nova Scotia, and is a workman who thoroughly understand his business At the time of the visit he was engaged in making a number of articles for exhibition at the forthcoming fair.
The Herald summarizes Senator How- lan’s speech at the Press dinner. It re- ports that Senator Howlan strongly advo- cated a union of the Maritime Provinces under one governmert. It was absurd for three small provinces to bear the enormous expense of three governors, three legislative assemblies, three legislative councils and three sets of department of- ficers. But even this was not the worst feature. Under present conditions the lower provinces could never exercise the in- fluence and carry the weight which they should do in Ottawa. Ontario was a great province because its government and people were one and presented a solid front. Quebec invariably presented even a more solid and united front than Ontario. The influence of these provinces was all-power- ful. But the influence of what ought to be a great maritime province was so divided that it was very small compared with what it should be. A man got up in parliament
authorized to speak for the 1,000,000 of people in the maritime provinces. He might speak for the 100,000 in P. E. Is- land, or the 500,000 in Nova Scotia, or the authority to speak forthe whole. The trip to Souris was, says the Herald, one of the most enjoyable features of the visit. The distance is sixty miles from Charlettetown. Superintendent Unsworth, who, contrary to the fate of the generality of railway managers, is a great fayorite with the people of the Island and the employes of the road, organized a popular excursion, placing the tickets at the low rate of half a cent aimile. Some three hundred citizens accompanied the press party on this trip. Superintendent Unsworth placed his pri- vate car at the disposal of the ladies of the party ; and no merrier crowd ever ep joyedthemselvesthan didthe pressmen on this occasion. After dinner, the leading citizens of the town turned out with their teams and drove the visitors through the surrounding country. Among the promin- ent ones in this connection were Sheriff Mc- Donald, John McLean, George McEachren, Dr. Muttart, ex M. P., Henry Morrow, Dr. George Muttart, Hon. Thomas Kickham, J. G. Sterns (nephew of Luther Sterns, of Dartmouth), Michael McCormack. R. F. McDonald, Rev. Donald Francis, Rev. J. G. Cameron, Peter Stewart, Dennis Murphy, George Knight, C. C. Carleton (United States consular agent, etc.). There were some forty carriages in the procession, and nothing like it has been seen in Souris since the visit of Hon. Alexander Mackenzie and Sir Richard Cartwright in 1877.
