We have several times urged the propriety of signifying, by the erection of a suitable memorial to the late George Coles and Edward Whalen, the gratitude of our people for political services which will benefit this Province till the end

The Oat Crop.

THe best authorities in the States esti- mates that the oat crop of that country is considerably smaller than that of 1886, while the corn crop is smaller by 115, 950,- 545 bushels than the average of the past ten years; and more cattle, pigs and horses

than ever remain to be fed. This being so,

the States will have less oats and corn to export than in previous years; and conse- quently prices may be expected to stiffen up before spring. In the States there has already been an advance in oats from 34} to 35 cents for 2 mixed elevator on the 25th November to 38 cents on the lst December. Our fariners-—at least those who can do av and pay their debts—will do well if they hold their oats until the spring.

Not for Sale.

Tue Monetary Times treats seriously the ridiculous proposition that the United States shuuld buy these Maritime Provinces for fifty milliens of dollars, and points out that, —

‘The mistake which Mr Atkinson makes is in treating national territory and allegiance as salable commodities. Tie Maritime Pro- vinces are not for sale; the allegiance of the people of these provinces is not a disposable commodity. You might as well offer a price fora man’s honor. We cannot undertake to discuss, with Mr. Atkinson, whether these provinces are a necessary part of Canada, or whether a profitable sale could be made. - No- body pretends to have any right to sell them, to make merchandise of them, to throw them into the arms of a foreign country, greatly against the will of a large majority of their inhabitants, or at all. As a reason for the United States purchasing, Mr. Atkinson says these provinces would, in ten years, pay back the purchase money, in taxes. If Mr. Atkin- son had a farm, the products of which would pay its purchase price in ten years, he would probably think it worth keeping.”

There is a world of significance in the atatement of the greatest statistician in the United States, that these Provinces, if bought by the States, would, in ten years,

Corn, Pork and Petatoes in the States,

Bradstreets reports that the slaughter of hogs, summer and winter, at the packing points in the States the past season, ranges trom 12,000,000 to upwards of 14,000,000 head. Corn is generally used for fattening these swine. There are about 8,000,000 persons engaged inthe United States in agriculture, or, say, 2,000,000 families, every one of which slaughters five or six hogs. Corn isthe feed mainly for this. The United States potato crop of 1887 is deficient, being 134,000,000 bushels, against 163,000,000 bnshels in 1886. The corn crop of 1887 is 1,453,000,000 bushels, against 1,665,441,000 bushels in 1886, and 1,455,950,545 bushels as the average from 1876 to 1885. The crop this year is 115,- 950,544 bushels less than the average of ten yearss and 212,451,000 bushels less than the crop of 1886. The corn crop was planted on 78,000,000 acres and harvested on only 73,000,000 acres, 5,000,000 acres being too poor to harvest on account of drouth. There are large herds of cattle to be fed and fattened, and corn is the feed in general use. There are also a vast number of horses to be fed, and corn is the feed to a very large extent for this. The distillers and the glucose makers and the starch makers come in for their share in con- suming corn. Corn is rising in price. The advance is between 4}c. and 4fc. this week, and the advance fromthe lowest price of the se son has been over 14c. Export is taking it, consumption for home use is using its millions every week. Speculation seems on this basis of facts to be using it.

News From Souris.

BUSINESS BOOMING.

Over one million pounds mere freight were carried over the railway between Morell and Souris last month than was carried over that portion of the road during the same month last year. And _ still the rush continues: Steamers calling at Souris weekly have given alreadyj an impetus to trade that is felt all over the country. Besides the S. S. Miranda, which is ex- pected to arrive to-day at that place for a full cargo which has been in readiness for her since last week, there are in port the Sch. Pearl Nelson, Capt. M. Kemp, of Provincetown, U. S., to be loaded with potatoes by Mr. J. G. Sterns; Sch. 5. A. Morash, Capt. Ritcey, of Lunenburg, N. 8., and Sch. Florence, Capt. W. Hamilton, of La Have, N.S., both preparing to take in cargoes of potatoes from the firm of Messrs. Matthew & McLean. ;

The George Watters, Capt. . Simon Cheverie, from Halifax with a cargo of merchandize for variovs Souris merchants, arrived on the 15th inst.

She Sch. Four Sisters has just come to anchor in lee of the breakwater, where are also anchored three Magdalen vessels that are returning from Halifax on their way home, on probably their last trip for the season.

Five more vessels are expected to arrive there for produce before navigation closes. Business for the last weck or sv, we are told, has been booming. Being the Eastern terminus of the Island railway,and principal port of shipping in the eastern end of the County, Souris is bound to go ahead. Never did its prospects look brighter than at the present moment. Besides enlarged busi- ness among its merchants and traders, the town is to have a skating rink for those in search of health and pleasure. In time for the Christmas holidays, a suitable building will be erected,'a well sunk, and the ground flooded near Belle Street, where many of the citizens will doubtless pass their leisure hours on skates.

The County Court is sitting at Souris Judge Reddin went East for that pur- pose Monday.

The “Century” for December.

Tue December number of the Century magazine, always so welcome to our table for its fullness of instructive sabjects and richness of illustration, has as usual vin- dicated its claim to stand in the foremost rank of our periodical instructors. To read it is to understand why the popular demand for the Century, measured by its issue, is sume two hundredand fifty thousand copies, but by its readers by indefinite millions. The seal of approval has spread its clean-cut impression in every literary centre in both the new and old world. No collection of monthlies is complete anywhere in its absence.

There is, too, in reading almost any special issue of the Century, such a realizing sense of the true inwardness of its litera- ture that the mind is left in no doubt about the coming feasts of well reasoned and mind-satisfying contents that are sure to follow in serial faithfulness to its great success.

Readers not only look overa present number but forward to the future num- bers of the forthcoming series,— and in this direction we may expect after the ‘*‘ War Series” and the ‘‘ Life of Lincoln,” the most important enterprise ever undertaken by the Century, the forthcoming series of illustrated papers upon ‘* Siberia, and the Exile System,” by George Keenan, author of ‘Tent Life in Siberia,” who has recently returned from an arducys journey of fifteen thousand miles through European and Asiatic Russia, undertaken at the request of the Century. Mr. Keenan had spent four years in Ryssia and Siberia, and being thoroughly familiar with the language of the people, and having a circular letter of introduction from the Russian Minister of the Interior to the governors of Siberian provinces, the work of investigation was begun under peculiarly favorable circumstances. Mr. Keenan made the intimate personal acquaintance of more than three hundred exiled liberals, revolutionists, and Nihilists in all parts of Siberia, and his report is a wonderful revelation of the inner history of the Exile System. Mr. Geo. A. Frost, the artist, accompanied the writer, and the series will be fully illustrated, and we have no doubt but that the Century will out-century its own record in this Siberian series.

In the present issue we find a paper on ‘*The Sea of Galilee,” which, in connec- tion with its illustrative wood cuts, ought to impress the religious minds with new fervor in a sublime belief in the Nazarene, for He walked there as on a floor of ada- ment. He there said to the angry winds : ** Peace, he still,” and on those waters He met His disciples after His resurrection.

The notes on ‘ Parisian Newspapers,” the story ‘‘After the War,” and the admir- able paper on ‘*‘ Durham Cathedral” are all worthy of their positions in the December number of the Century Illustrated Monthly Magazine ; Sand although$with some minor features of the serial we are not specially in love, as a whole it may be said to be un- exceptionably good reading.

Montreal's Coal Trade.

The $ imports of bituminous goal into Montreal for the season of 1887 show a marked increase over those of 1887. The fol- lowing comparison indicates the quantity and source of supply :--

Vienna, Dec. 6. Fremdenblatt says: Russian military measures on the frontier are at variance with the general desire for peace, and hopes thereof caused by the meeting of the

the frontier, it will compel us to make similar measures that we may not be be- hind. Russia's preparations are threaten- ing and totaliy unprovoked.

Pesther Lloyds says : ‘* The situation is undoubtedly a most serious one. Russia’s attitude is so threatening we cannot but think war inevitable.”

Bern, Dec. 6.

The Post says the report of the assem- bling of Russians on the Galician frontier evokes apprehensions. It is a blow against Austria. Whether it will admit Germany's remaining at peace for any length of time is x question. Russia has long since answered.

The Boiler Accident. Pycrov, Dec. 7.

In the matter of the terrible explosion at Stellarton, the jury returned the fcllowing verdict: ‘‘ That Daniel Robertson came to his death by the explosion of the boiler of Locomotive 170, and thatthe bulk of expert testimony leads. to the conclusion that the said boiler was weak. The jury recommend that a system of regular inspection of boilers be adopted by the I. C. R. department.

The dead men will be buried tu-morrow. In respect of the number (20) of fatherless children they left, the accident has no parallel in all Canada.

The Morning Post, commenting on Pre- sident Cleveland’s message, says: ‘‘The message will produce a profound sensation in Europe, as well as in America, and will strengthen the free traders case throughout the world.” The Standard says: ‘Pres. Cleveland’s message is based en financial principles the soundness of which it is im- possible successfully to dispute. It marks a revolutionary starting point in fiscal con- troyersjes of the United States.

Tue Literary and Scientific Institute met last evening at the usual place, for the election of officers. The attendance was not so large as might be wished.

After afew introductory remarks by the President the business of the evening was proceeded with, and resulted in the election of the following officers : —

After the election a vote of thanks was tendered to Mr. K. J. Martin (retiring Secretary) who refused nomination for re-election.

The next meeting of the Institute will be held in the Caledonian Club Hall, on Thursday evening, 15th inst., and weekly thereafter at the same place. We trust the attendance in future will be larger than in the past.

Papers will he read by a number of our ablest literary and scientific men, and those who wish to keep abreast of the times cannot do better than attend. Tickets can be procured frum the Secretary or from any member of the committee.

The subject for next night of meeting will be announced in due time.
