USE MARITIME PORTS

The pronouncements in the Gov- ernor-Gcnerafs Speech and in the ll-t. Hon. Arthur-Melighenhs motion on the order-pauper of the House in- dicaze that both the leading partiés in thc House of Commons realize the importance, if not the urgent necessity, of dtveloping the Mari- time Ports in tpreference to that of Pcriand, U. S. A. It has always ap- pcami to us anomalous to continue the use of Portland at the expense cf the general interests in Canada. We rzalized what that means during .he early years of -war. The United States ‘beinig a neutral Canada could not transport men or munitions over the Portland branch of the C. N. it, and everything had ta be ‘brought to Halifax and Q. John ‘whcn the navigation of the St Law- rence closed. We know the disloca- ilons of traffic that ensued. Had the Maritime ports been in use and the railway feeders developed there would have ‘been practically none of the confusion, delay and expense ‘then exrpcriencetl. What Is the lesson of all this? is it not that the Maritimes must. stand together if they are to have any hope 0f regaining their lost ground’? For self protection they m-ust stand together, buy the pro- ducts of their own home industries, build up the home pay rolls, give homo employment to their own workers, keep Maritime money in the Maritime Provinces und stop the ocean tide of money that has been flowing westward for a gen- eration past.
