-A quiet but pretty wedding was soleinnlned on Wednesday evening at 1 o'clock at the Baptist Parsonage. Summe side, by Rev. W. A. Harper when Ella Eivine. daughter of Mrs. Ethel Hec-kberi. and the late Mr. Wesley Heckbert of ”. became the bride of Gerald George Brooks, son of Mrs. Abner Hiscott and the late Mr. George Brooks of Stanley Bridge.

The bride was lovely in her floor-length gown of white satin with fitted bodice and lily point sleeves. Her finger tip veil was held in place with a wedding band heiiddrcss and her bouquet was of Better Time roses. .

Miss Joan Ellis. classmate of the bride. was gowncd in floor-length white organdy over taffeta, with matching mitts. Her floral head- band matched her bouquet of Pink Delight roses.

Following the ceremony I re- ception for the immediate rela- tives was held at the home of Mrs. Francis Perry.

Mr. Arsenault. spent a week at the Maritime head office of the company which la la- catocl at Moncton. N. B., receiving instructions. and is new daily go- ing the rounds through this com- munity. He is an energetic young man and is very popular with everyone in the community.

Mrs. Emmanuel P. Doucette and little niece Judy, of Tignish, spent the past week-end in Summer- side at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Arsenault. Mrs. Doucette also visited her son Gerard who has been I. patient in the Prince County Hospital for the past eight weeks. Yesterday was Battle of Britain Sunday. a day set I ids in re- mern-b co of the glorious deeds and heroic efforts of a. handful of men who, on the eve of what might have been Britain's def.at,' turned aside the thrust of Hitler's most. poweiiui wtapuii-.-it. nut..- weffe. In the gloomy clays of 1940 when the eyes of the world were focused on n tottering empire. the R. A. F., in a sudden blaze of courage, took to the air and hurt- ed itself against the large German air force. Although almost hope- lesiiy outnumbered, this small group of fliers delivered the fatal blow to Nazi air power.

The Battle of Britain holds special significance for Canadians. In August 1940 I squadron of the Royal Canadian Air Force for the first time flew in action againstan enemy, won its first victor es and suffered its first casualti . It is fitting that this battle in which that force first "won its spurs" should be remembered with pride.

In Summerside yesterday Battle of Britain Sunday was fittingly observed with appropriate services in St. Paul's Church conducted by Padre J. P. 0'llanley and in the Presbyterian Church by Padre George Fee. The weather, which was threatening all during the early part of the day, cleared in time and at the conclusion of the church services the parade of R. C. A. F. personnel. under the com- mand of wing Commander I... C. Dilworth, D. F. C., and headed by the Canadian Legion Band formed up on Central street and march- ed to the Memorial square where the commanding officer of the station, wing Commander D. A. Willis, D.F.C.. who was accom- panied by His Honor Lt.-Governor T. W. L. Prowse delivered an im- pressive address.

Wing Commander Willis said that "the outward form of the com- meration comprises-church parades land services and the laying of Wreaths at cenotaphs. The real as- pccis embraces. first, remembrance of all Canadian air crew who have given their lives in the cause of their country. secondly, remem- brance of those who survived ex- posure to extreme danger but whose courage and example are none the less in survival. Thlrdly. thanksgiving that our cause has so far triumphed and the rededic- ation of ourselves to the end that our endeavors of the future will be commensurate with the best trad- itions of the service and thus re- flect credit upon our land and its people. Each year we recall at this time the words of the Rt. Dan. Winston Churchill, who assumed the responsibilities of Prime Min- lster of Britain after the fall of France in 1940 when he said. ”i.et us brace ourselves to our duties and so bear ourselves that. if the British Empire and its Common-

wealth last a thousand years. men will say. this was their finest hour."

Labor congress Makes New Demands

HALIFAX. Sept. 16-(CP)--The Trades and Labor Congress of Canada wound up its annual

convention Saturday after laying down policy for 500,000 workeis in ii wide field of social. eco- nomic and political matters.

The week-long convention saw Canada's biggest labor body press new demands on Govern- ments. admlnister blows to its left-wing minority and open ii split in the six-months-old pro- gram of co-operation with other major labor bodies.

Highlights of the week:

1. A call upon the Federal Government for direct price con- trols. accompanied by a rollback

of prices. subsidies on consumer necessities and a 10-per-cent sales tax.

2. An admonition to all its affiliated unions to go after . new found of wage increases to keep up with the rising cost of living.

3. Demand: for federally-suh- sidized housing. on ii low-rental basil. and for ii contributory. government-aided national health insurance scheme.

Potato Acreage Reduction

Could Prince Edward Island farmers have known that blight would cause greater loss among their potatoes this year than usual, they probably would not have re- duced the acreage so drastically. No one could foresee that blight devastation would carry the re- duction program further than was desirable. if the price is high this fall and winter, the farmers stand to lose considerable money. It is perhaps better to have small crops and high prices than large

crops and low prices as labor and overhead expenses are lessened and the Farmer-'s remuneration

per hour much higher.

Farmers are a group of people however, who do not pay too much attention to hours of labor. 40- hour weeks are unknown to the man who follows the plough. And the way farmers alter a disastr- ous year pick up their tools with determination and courage the following year should prove an inspiration to the ordinary man faced with defeat.

A stranger in Summerside re- cently got two inar-curate direct- ions and ass result covered quite a number of the town's back streets before arriving at his destination. He was distinctly impressed with the W39-UW of our little town and remarked that the unnecessary detours were worth the extra. time and trouble. Unsolicited compli- meals of this kind are worth a dozen rosy encomiums delivered by guests of the town who deliver after-dinner speeches where com- pliments are as much the regular thing as raisins in a plumb loaf.

We have never been intimately connected with Boy Scout work but know enough about it to rip. preciate the value of the skills and attitudes towards life which boy scouts acquire. The "good deed every day” rule was a stroke of genius. Too bad we couldn't 533”: 501118 man-scout organiza- tions.
