And with, theee charges all true, admittedly true, how can it ex- pect that the people of West River- Rus:ico district will return ‘‘the Liberal candidate by a handsome majority.” The only ground upon which euch a conclu- sion can be arrived at ia that the people care nothing ‘whatever for the prineiples of responsible Government, or about the

increasing debt of the Province, or atout honesty in the Government of the country, Has the

Patriot a right to assume this concerning the Secoad District of Queen’s ? It bas aot. Nor can it assume that the people will uphold wroag and robbery and mis- government such es that which was made evident last seseion in the vacant seat cf their own elected representative, in the fact tha! a man rejected of the people of Murray Barbour continues to hold the ime portant and responeible position of Attorney-General of the Province,—in view of the scandalous trickery of the Government regarding the representatives of both the second and third districts of Qeen’s (County! Pineau apart, there ig no ground, whatever for the Patriot’s expectation that the Farquharson candi- date will be elected. The Farquaareson candidate cannot beelected if the people are but true to themselves and true to Literal principles.

There is but one ground upon which the Patriot’s expectation can be based,— and that is upon the sums |‘ of money for road work, etc., which the Government is now scattering broadcast throughout the second district, But we cannot believe that the majority in the district will, upon this ground vote confidence in a Govera-~ ment which—to say nothing of the enor- mous debt that has been accumulated— stands before the people, indefensible, guilty of violation of statute law and con- stitutional principles. The petty bribery of the Government may influence a few persons Of low oharacter. But we prefer to believe that the great majority will, after the example of Belfast aod Murray Harbor, vote the bribere out. The Patriot’s talk about “a handsome me jority,” at the beginning of, the campaign is foolish and unreasonable.

places, itis true that the old, rotsen, ugly bridge at end of Brighton road is not being replaced by a new bridge as soon as some persons expacted, it is true that our streets are not as smoth or cleanas they might be. But there are reasons, we are assured, for the delay of the works of repair—some of them unavoidable.

The suggestion, contained in the letters of eur corresponderts, that a good steam roller and street sweeper should be ob. tained,eeems to be well worthy of favorable consideration. When in Halifax, lately, the writer noticed the esse aad celerity with which the streets of that city were made smooth and hard by means of a heavy steam roller. Whether the results would be equally satisfactory here is a question to be looked into and discussed. An expenditure that would make for econ~ omy in respect to Screet repair and at the same time result in ths needed improve- ment of our streets is one that may prop- erly be made.

—In the Senate on the 27:h inst., Hon. D. Ferguson made a telling accusation against the Government in the matter of Mr. Henry J. Pineau, M. L. A. for Tig nish, P. E.I., who waa elected as a Con- servative and since became a Liberal, thereby saving the Farquharson Govern- ment. In vain, says an Ottawa corres- pondent, the members of the Government endeavored to cajoie the House into be- lieving that there was no connection between Mr. Pineau and any member of the Government. The charges were proven and will remain proven to the gen- eral mind.

— The Liberals of Canada, amcng whom Sir Louis Daviesis a leader, promised to reduce the “enormous expendi ures” of the Dominion G>vernmest under the Con- servatives; they have, in point of fact, in- creased ‘he expenditures by $18,000,000 to $20,000,000 « year!
