A Patriotic Speech.

In the course of his great speech on the question of disallowance of the Manitoba Railway charters, Sir Charles Tupper said :

“There is not a man in this house but must feel that it would be a gross breach of faith, after that enormous expenditure, after we have risked even the credit of this country in order to accomplish this Herculean task, | say there is not a man on either side of this house but must feel that these older provinces would have a right to say we have been deceived and misled, if you permit a policy to be adopted that is going to take the trathe away from the line to the north of Lake Superior, and divert it into foreign channels, even at the bidding or in the interests of a certain section of the population of Canada. That trade we have all looked to, not only as a means of benetit- he older provinces, but ot establishing close intimate commercial relations between the people of Winnipeg, of Manitoba and the great Northwest and the people of those older

This meeting asked the council to grant $8,000—$3,000 for an art school and 35,000 for sports. Only one alderman was appoiuted on the citizens’ committee. Thos. Robertson died suddenly at King- ston, Ont., on the 30th ult., of apoplexy. He wasa witness inacase at court, and while being cross-examined he dropped dead. He was landing waiter in the cus- toms.

On Saturday the peasants attacked the residence of O'Callaghan, at Westrop, Ire- land, where 100 constables engaged in_ the Bodyke evictions are lodged. Many win- dows were broken. Twelve arrests were made.

A despatch from New York gives the particulars of a great but not entirely new project foran air line railroad between Boston and New York, shortening the distance to 193 miles and the running time to 34 hours.

The Italian chamber of deputies, by vote of 170 to49, Monday, adopted a naval credit for 89,000,000 lire. The money will be expended on ironclads, torpedoes and forts. The credit is to extend over a period of ten years.

Lord Lansdowne has sent a letter to Mayor Stewart expressing thanks for the reception tendered him at Ottawa. He refers to the scene as a truly remarkable one and a wonderful demonstration of loyalty and significance.

The increase in railroad earnings contin- ues to be well maintained. The thirty- nine roads which make their reports pub- lic for the fourth week of April had an in- crease, as compared with the same week of 1886, of over 94 per cent.

Herr Von Radowitz, German ambassa- dor at Constantinople, declares that the article by Gen. Leflo, recently published in Figaro, in which it was asserted that Rus- sia prevented Germany from attacking France in 1875, was incorrect.

A wooden cross has been erected at Bod- yoke, Ire., where the work of eviction has had to be stopped on account of the sherilf being seized with a fit, upon which are in- scribed these words: ‘* Praise the Lord, here the tyrant’s art was paralyzed.”

On his death bed, Wallace Christian confessed that he had murdered his brother Isaac fifteen years ago, and buried the body under the hearth of their residence, at Louisville, Ky. An excavatiou was made under the hearth and. the skeleton was discovered which was buried by the side of the slayer.

United States Assistant Secretary May- nard has informed the collector of customs at New York that fresh fish, when import- ed for immediate consumption, are exempt from duty, no matter by whom caught or by whom imported, but if they are not im- ported for immediate consumption they are subject to duty.

Capt. W. L. White, one of the founders of the Kansas Daily Beacon, died on the 27th ult., aged fifty-one years. An hour before his death he was united in marriage to Miss Susanna Sebastian, to whom he had been for some time betrothed. The bride of an hour, who isa young woman, is heiress to his property, valued at $500,-

Mr. Oliver Latour, the well-known lum- berman, has returned to Ottawa from Mattawa. He reports great excitement in that village over the discovery of rich gold bearing quartz in a hill opposite Mattawa close to the north shore, Ottawa river. On Sunday prospectors were busy at work all day blasting the rock, and villagers are filled with the belief that they have struck it rich.

Lord Colin Campbell’s lines have fallen unto him in very unpleasant places. All the shame he thought to cast upon his wife’s name was turned upon his own, and before the world, at the end of the divorce trial, he appeared in the saddest light. He is now drinking the dregs of his cup of bit- terness, and appears before the world a bankrupt in purse and character. And it must be said thers will be little sympathy | for him.
