THE NEW IDEAS OF TOOTH SURGEONS AND THEIR QUEER APPLIANCES.

No Longer Any Necessity for Pulling Teeth—Dentists Know How to Patch and Tinker Them—Porcelain Fillings Instead of Gold Ones.

The talk of the convention of dental surgeons, held recently, gave a notion of the revolution in dentistry that has tak-

en place within the past few years. |

Merely with respect to what electricity has accomplished in that branch of medical science, there is a good deal to be said.

But the use of an electric light in con- nection with the little mirror introdnue- ed into the month, the teeth and alveo- lar processes are brilliantly illuminated and rendered translucent. Thus any- thing wrong about the teeth may be quickly discovered. For example, dead tooth-pulp shows black and opaque. Perhaps the dead tooth may be hidden m the jaw, never having been erupted, and may have been the obscure cause of trouble for years, The light reveals it at once,

Facial neuralgia, by the way. is nearly always due to adead tooth, and may be stupped by a good dentist.

Electricity is most valuable as a mo- tive power for tooth boring tools, which, strauge to say, cause less pain the faster they yo. Most people now grown up can recall the excruciating pain caused by the excavating instrument which the dentist of a generation ago slowly re- volved between his fingers. The “burs,” now made for such work, are much finer than they were half a dozen years ago, eins capable of cutting through steel

Furthermore the laborious method of turning them out by hand has been superseded by a machine which produces them at a cost of nineteen cents apiece. The mwachine-made burrs are much more perfect, those less in size than a pin- head being too small for observation with the naked eye, but exhibiting under a magnifying glass the forms of most exquisite catting tools.

Electricity isempioyed also for pulling teeth. This mechanism consists of a two- cell battery with vibrator attachment— the latter a thin strip of metal fastened at both ends and made to vibrate 1,000 or nrore times a second by a current. At each vibration the current is cut and ‘enewed again, the effect being to givea

To the battery are attached three wires. Two of them have handles at the end, while the third is attached to the ‘forceps. The patient grasps the handles, the electricity is turned on suddenly, and the dentist simultaneous- iv applies his forceps to the tooth. The instant the tooth is touched, it, as well as the surrounding parts, becomes insensible to pain. A jerk and it 1s out.

One dentist at the convention re- marked that there is not one tooth lost now where there used to be 100. The day of reckless tooth-pulling has passed. it isa mighty poor tooth that the skilled operator of to-day cannot render far better and more serviceable than the best possible false one. If only the root is left, a new upper part of porcelain or gold, called a ‘ crown,” is fastened upon it 60 as to be — serviceable.

Supposing that not even the root is left, a gap in the mouth is filled in with oe or nore ‘‘dummies,” securely fast- ened by a gold ‘‘bridge” or otherwise to the sound teeth. Complete sets of false teeth are rare nowadays. On the other hand. people in a palpably tooth- less condition are almost never seen. The demand for ‘‘tooth-crowns” comes largely from baseball players, football athletes and bicycle riders, who are very apt to have their teeth broken off short.

The latest and most ingenious resort of the dental surgeon is ‘‘implantation,” i.e., the setting of new teeth into the jaw. For this purpose real teeth are employed, and no artificial ones. Co- caine having veen first applied for pro- ducing local anaesthesia, a hole is drilled in the jawbone and into this socket a good tooth, newly drawn from somebody's jaw, is set. Ifthe patientis young and vigorous the osseous struc- ture soon closes around it, and by the time the gum is healed the tooth is ready for use. It should last from three to ten years. In the case of an elderly or feeble person it may be fastened in place ny silver wires passing around the jaw- bone.

The root of a freshly-extracted tooth is covered with a delicate membrane called the ‘‘pericementum,” the vitality of which materially assists the wished- tor combining of the tissues. Unless the grinder is directly transferred, the vital- ity of this memb-rane must be artificially preserved. One way of doing it is to grait the tooth temporarily into the comb of a cock, that part of the fowl being well fed with blood, as may be seen from its redness. When wanted for use itis cut out. Ordinarily the pa- tient is obliged to wait for a while until the dentist has a suitable tooth, freshly extracted, unless he chooses to hire somebody to sacrifice one.

One of the most important improve- ments in modern dental practice is on the point of being accomplished. It will consist in the substitution of porce- lain for gold in the filling of teeth. For tLis purpose a piece of thin platinum foil is introduced into the ‘‘cavity” and 30 manipulated as to take the exact form of the hole, as if it were intended as a lining. Then it is carefully withdrawn o as not to disturb its shape. Thus is »btained a mold from which a porce- ain cast may be made to fill the cavity ‘xactly. This is secured in place by

cement. The trouble is that no cement yet invented is proof against the dissolv- ing power of the fluids in the month. Accordingly, this process of ‘‘inlaying,” us it is called, must remain toa great extent unavailable until a non-soluble ceuient snail be discovered.

There is no longer any cause for crooked jaws, inasmuch as dental sur- geous know how to make them straight. ‘this may be accomplished, up to theage of twenty years, by simple contrivan- ces. One of them is a plate in two pieces united by a spring, which con- tinually exerts a pressure in the desired direction. Another device consists of a series of wooden disks, each one to be worn until it no longer fits tightly, and then to be replaced by the one next larger. The deformity ofa projecting lower jaw is remedied by a spring ar- rangement with acap on the chin and another og the back of the head. By oneal iin

Artificial teeth cost only fifteen to eighteeii cents each at the manufactur- ers. One maker in New York sells 8,000,000 teeth every year. They are of peneeinin. composed chiefly of kaolin.

After being finished, thousands of them are taken together and matched in shades. There are fifty different shades, corresponding to variations in the coloring of natural teeth.

Proper Care of Harness.

Some farmers pay little attention to the proper care of their harness, says the American Agriculturist, devoting less attention to it than liverymen, cab and hack drivers, who attend to this matter because it pays them well to do 60. Itis not a rare sight tosee a farm- er's heavy draught and single harness that have been used for several years without a drop of any lubricant touch- ing them since they came from the deal- er’s hands. All the leather portion is hard and brittle and presents a dull ap- pearance. If used during a shower, the parts that are rubbed look more like porous sole leather than an oak-tanned article. Such treatment shortens the life and usefulness of the harness at least one-half; whereas, a few cents’ worth of oi] and two or three hours’ time each year would not only make the harness far more presentable, but add to its use- fulness, and what is of greater import- ance, toits safety. Do not hang the harness in a horse stable. The ammo-

by thoroughly washing with strong cas- tile soap suds. The harness should be taken apart before commencing oper- ations. Choose a warm day, if done out of doors, or work near a stove if in- doors. As soon as dry, any of the har- ness oils may be apylied with a woolen cloth, or soft sponge, using care to sa- turate every portion. After each strap has been oiled, bend it back and forth, thereby introducing the oil to the very centre of each strap. If not previously oiled for a long time a second applica- tion should be given, and after a few hours go over with a dry cloth, remov- ing all thut has not been absorbed. In i of the usual neat's-foot or petre- eum harness oil, melted lard free from salt, or even unsalted butter, may be used. Itis better still to boil up the broken shin bones of a beef. The mar- row, and what tallow there may be, will make a most valuable dressing of alinost the consistency of oil, and may be bottled for future use. Ifa color be desired, add a little lampblack. This will prove equally efficacious as a dres- sing for boots and shoes. Fifty cents’ worth of these shin bones, obtained of any butcher, will yield enough neat's- foot oil to last several years.

The question of card etiquette is like the poor, always with us. There seems on some points connected with it no authority that may be regarded as final. The innovation seems surpris ing, particularly at the time, when the office of pall-bearer is becoming purely honorary, the care of the coffin from hearse to grave being now sometimes confided entirely to the undertaker’s as- sistants.

An Animal Flower,

There is a wonderful flower, which has lately been discovered by the inhabi- tants of St. Lucia, a description of which is given in the Philadelphia Press.

It grows in a cavern in an immense basin of brackish water that has over flowed from the e2a. The bottom of the basin is covered with pebbles, and each pepple with from one to five of these plants, which, for want of a better rame, are termed ‘‘animal flowers.”

These curious creatures, which are in all shades of colors, remind one ofa beautiful flower bed. To the sight they are perfect flowers, but on the approach of a hand or astick they retire out of sight. Close examination shows that the middle of the flower-like disc is pro- vided with four filaments, which move around the ‘petals’ with a brisk, spon- taneous motion. Each of these filaments is provided with pinchers for seizing

rey. r They live upon the spawn of fish and marine insects. Whenever the pincher moves, the filaments make a ‘‘catch,” the petals immediately close, and there is no escape for whatever has been so unfortunate as to fall into the voracious creature’s maw.
