Lectstative.The Local Legislature will be prorogued at twelve o'clock to-morrow. The guard of honor will be’ made up of one hundred men drawn from Wo. 1 Battery, G. A., the Engineers and 82nd Battalion, and will be in command of @aptain Stewart. The Artillery Band will be in attendance. A salute of fifteen guns will be fired from Fort Edward,by a detachment from No, 1 Battery, G. A., under Captain Passmore.
Hearv From Acatyn.—-Citizen Train was at latest accounts entertiining the people of Halifax. He is reported to have said that he had been to Windsor and on the road saw nothing but two water tanks and a wood pile. He was satisfied Windsor Janction was the place where the ark had landed, and where Noah threw the ballast out. He said that in Cin- cinnati every second man you meet is a boy, but at the Junction every second man is a goat.

A Cyanozr.—A Halifax man while in Bos- ton recently had a conversation with Harrison Loring. general agent of the steamers running between that port and Halifax, in which the latter states that it was the intention of the company to replace the Carroll and Worcester with two of the boats now running to Savan- nah, probably the Macon City and the Gate City. The two steamers now running would be used on this route in winter.—Halifax Herald.

Mrs. Malcom McLee, Mra. John Richards, and Miss Minaia Palmer were among the pas- sengers in the Northein Light which left here for Pictou yesterday afternoon. The first- named lady is ex route to Boston, and the two latter to Philadelphia.

Rescvep.—A few weeks ago Mr. Peter Stewart, of Souris, succeeded in floating the brigt. Hattie F. Rich, which was stranded at that place last fall. Owing to the ice he
was unable to get her to the Breakwater as his contract required him to do, and for several days she had been drifting about in the ice near the shore. On Wednesday morn- ing about half-past nine, a strong north- wester set in which drove the brigantine and the field of ice in which she was held, out to sea. There were cu board at the time eight men, viz: Peter “t-wart, Peter McDonald, Edward Lavie, Randolph Lord, R. Lord, Wm. Prossie and Albert McDonald of Souris, and Edward Kinsman, of Summerside. With wind and tide in her tavor, she was going at the rate of five miles an hour, and in less than half an hour was completely out of sight. As she had neither radder nor compass nor bal- last, nor much provisions, the prospect looked anything but cheering, and great anxiety was felt on shore for the men on board. At 12 o'clock she was about 7 miles off Red Point, when, provideutially, the Northern Light was nearing the land on her route from Pictou to Souris. Capt. Finlayson and his mate got sight of the distressed vessel, and immediate- ly went to her rescue. About half-past two the Northern Light arrived at Souris with the Hattic F. Rich in tow. As they neared the wharf three cheers for Capt. Finlayson were proposed by Dr. Muttart, which were lustly responded to by over @ hundred persons who had assembled at the wharf. This was a well-merited compliment to Capt Finlayson for his prompt and humane action in this case, —COM .

After dining at the castle the Queen and Empress drove to the drill grounds-and in spected the Life Infantry Guards, Prin- cesses Victoria and Margaret accompanying them on horseback.

The Queen, accompanied by the Empress, drove to Berlin to bid farewell to the Dowager Empress and Grand Duke, and Grand Duchess of: Baden.
The Emperor at the interview yesterday handed the Queen the insigna of the Order of the Bath, which she bestowed upon Wil- liam to celebrate his 50th year of military service; also the late Emperor’s Order of the Garter.
At the reception following the banquet
the Queen freely conversed in the purest German, devoting _ parti- cular attention to Bismarck, who
shook hands heartily with Her Majesty before retiring. The Queen found at the station the Burgomaster and members of the Municipal Council of Charlottenberg, attired in official robes to pay their respects to Her Majesty. The Crown Princes intro- duced them to the Queen. who expressed cordial thanks for the kindly welcome ex. tended her by the inhabitants.
The Crown Prince then conducted the Queen to the saloon carriage. After affec- tionate embraces the train started amid loud cheers. The whole route to the sta- tion was lined with crowds who heartily saluted the Queen.
At the Castle the Queen bade the Em- per an affectionate farewell. The Emperor expressed the hope to see her again in bet- tertimes. The Queen repeatedly express- ed gratification at the friendly welcome given her by the people of Berlin,

Editor Hawke in Jail,

Frepericron, April 26.
Mr. Hawke having refused to enter into recognizance pending the hearing — of answers to the interrogatories, was taken to jail this afternoon. To-night he was brought before the Clerk of the Court, T. C. Allen, for examination for the inter- rogatories. At the conclusion of the ex- amination, Mr. Hawke at the jail gave the following to your correspondent for publi- cation :—
‘“] was taken by the Deputy Sheriff at 8 o'clock to-night from the jail before J. Carle- ton Allen, an examiner, to answer the inter- rogatories, Mr. Gregory being present as my counsel. The interrogatories simply specified some of the articles containing the alleged con- tempt as to whether I wrote and published them, and whether I was the publisher of the Transcript at the time the articles appeared. All questions containing matters of fact were answered pretty nearly as in my argument before the court. There were a num- ber of interrogatories, however, put as to what I intended by certain statements. These were objected to by Mr. Gregory as im- proper, and he asked the examiner to rule them out, but Mr. Allan refused, and Mr. Gregory intimated that he would move in the court to-morrow that this class of interroga- tions be eliminated. They were then put to the prisoner, but he declined to answer them at present.” tame
Mr. Hawke said the reason that he had not entered recognizance was because such a course would indicate submission, and as the articles were, in his opinion, not con- tempt and not intended to be contempt, and were justified in the public interest, he preferred going to jail for telling the truth rather than retaining his liberty by making an apology.
While Mr. Hawke was being interview- ed by the press correspondent in the jail, the Fredericton Brass Band, accompanied by a large number of people, took upa position in front of the jail and serenaded Mr. Hawke, with three cheers for the im- prisoned editor, and calls for an address from him, but of course this was impos- sible, and the crowd dispersed.
An Old Building Tumbles.
Woopstock, N. B., April 26.
An old building on the south side of the Maduxnakeag, formerly used as a furniture factory, fell this evening. Several small children were playing inside at the time and all escaped serious injury except Mary Sorell, aged 4 years, who was 80 seriously injured that she died shortly afterwards,
A Memorial Tablet.
Kixeston, Ont., April 26.
At a meeting of the Board of Trustees of Queen’s University a committee was author- ized to place a memorial tablet in various endowment funds on the walls of Convoca- tion Hall, and also to record the names of individual benefactors in the proposed University doomsday books.
McMaster University.
Toronto, April 26.
The Senate of McMaster University met to-day, and appointed Rev. Prof. Malcolm McVicar Chancellor. It is almost certain the University will be started. Chancellor MeVicar is a brother of Principal McVicar of the Presbyterian College at Montreal.

At Traveller's Rest, Lot 19,%on the 20th inst., Annie Blizabeth, wife of Edwin P. Raynor, and eldest daughter of the late John Pillman, of New London, inthe 48th year of her age. She was beloved by all who knew her; her sufferings were borne with christian patience. ‘* He giveth His beloved sleep.”
At Greenvale, on the 15th inst., of paraly- sis, Maria F., eldest daughter of the late Absalom Gregory. in the 34th year of her age. The deceased was for many years a consistent member in connection with the West . River Baptist Church, and was) universally es- steemed and respected by all who knew her. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. Mr. Bishop, assisted by the Rev. J. G. Cam- eron, and considering the very bad state of the roads, were largely attended. The family hereby desire to express their heartfelt thank- fullness to their neighbors for all the kindness and attention shown to the departed during her brief but trying illness.
In Denver, Monday morning, October 24, Marian Campion, of this city, aged nearly nine years. Miss Marian was a bright and in- teiligent child far beyond her years, and was beloved by all who knew her. She had been attending school at the Convent but a few days, when she was attacked by diphtheria, and to it gave up her promising young life. The parents have the heartfelt sympathy of their many friends in this city.—Herald- Democrat, Leadville, Colorado.
