Gov. Shivers addressed the in- terstate oil compact commission meeting which opened here today with more than 300 delegates pre- sent. lncluding leaders of the Can- adian and U. S. petroleum in- dustry. This is the first time the conservation group has met in Canada.

The Texas governor said that at the present rate of consumption proven reserves of oil in the U. S. will last 12 1-2 years and the gas reserves about 25 years.

NORFOLK, Va.. Sept. 2--(AP) -A United States naval officer was swept off the destroyer U. S. S. Norris at sea yesterday and was rescued by a. helicopter pilot- ed by an R.C.A.F. flier. A sailor who also fell overboard was pick- ed up by, a destroyer.

Says -MTO Bar To Soviet Aggression

TRAIL. B. C... Sept. 2-(CPl- Prime Minister St. Laurent told a Chamber of Commerce dinner here last night that the North Atlantic Treaty Organization is the only bar to Soviet aggression in the world today.

He acknowledged that the act- ion of the United Nations in Korea may have deterred Russia from aggression in Europe but he had more faith in N.A.T.O. as a way of preventing a third world war.

LONDON. Sept. 2 --(Reuters) - Appointment of Field Marshal Sir William slim. chief of the imperial General Staff, as Governor-Gener- al of Australia was approved by the Queen today. Prime Minister Rob- ert Menzies of Australia announced the appointment earlier at Can- berra.

Slim, whose term as staff chief ends in November. is expected to go to Australia early next year.

He succeeds sir William 'McKell. who has held the post since 1947. Gen. sir John Harding. commander of British armed forces in Ger- many, will take over the chief-of- staff post in London.

Slim was commander of the Brit- ish fourteenth army ln Burma dur- ing the Second World War where he picked up the nickname of ”Uncle Bill." A one-time machinist and blacksmith. he was appointed C. l. G. S. in October. 1948.

John L. Lewis, president of the United Mine Workers now nego- tiating a new contract with coal operators. ordered the men out last Aug. 2'! to begin the holiday. Such mourning periods are per- mitted under the current coiil contract. Lewis ordered his 475.- 000 miners out several times prevloiisly.

A wildcat walkout over some month-old firings closed three mines of the Jones and Laughiin Steel Corporation near Pitts- burgh.
