HockeyPanthers off to awinning season '

The University of Prince Edward Island Panthers won two decisive victories in Nova Scotia last week- end, defeating Saint Mary's University Huskies of Halifax Saturday and 'Acadia University 6-2 on Sunday afternoon in Atlantic Universities Athletic Assoc- iation hockey action.
The two wins give the Panthers who seem to be off on their best year ever, a perfect 6-0 record adn in sole possession of the top spot in the AUAA.
Saturday, 1983-84 AUAA scoring champ Greg Gravel started the scoring for UPEI with just 40 seconds on the clock. Then Albert Roche scored three goals within one minute before the first period Was five minutes old.
SMU goaltender Mike Volpe was taken out of the game and replaced by Bill Castonguay, but the highly offensive Panthers kept coming at SMU with eight more goals. Roche scored twice while Ron Carragher, Jeff Steffen Bob MacDonald and Steve Fulton scored once for UPEI.
SMU goalscorers were Tom Sethon, Bob Adrea, Alan MacDonald adn Tom Natter - each with one.
UPEI led 6-1 after the first period and 9-2 after the second period.
There were only six minor penalties handed out to each team Saturday in Halifax. UPEI hailed about 50 rubber projectiles at the SMU goal while UPEI goaltender Dave Reid,

The Panthers were with- out the services of four players and still managed to outscore their opponents by a fairly wide margin, something they have been doing a lot thus far (48 - 15 on the year).
Norman Beck is out with a knee injury sus- tained in the victory over the SMU Huskies two weeks ago. Danny Revell has an injured shoulder which occured in 6-2 vic- tory over St. Francis Xavier. Todd Sutcliffe and Panther captian Doug Currie also have minor injuries.

Sunday, The Panthers had a little more trouble but hung on to their 2-1 first period lead and de« feated the Acadia Axemen 6-2 in Wolfvllle.
Bob MacDonald scored twince whlle Albert Roche, Gordie Roche, Greg Gravel and Randy Muttart scored for UPEI whlle Bob Cald- well scored both goals for Acadia.
UPEI pelted 35 shots at Acadia’s goaltender Alan Mitchell and Acadia retal- iated with 28 shots at UPEl goaltender Tony Halliduck.
Acadia was UPEl’s toughest opponent this year, and there were a few

more penalties handed out than in previous games against SMU: 13 for UPEI and 11 to ACADlA.
Two players from each team were given game mlsconducts for fighting in the 3rd period: Bob Hicks, who battled Acadia's Greg
Rowe, and rookie Kevin Skillteer adn Acadia’s Harvey Mappleback ‘were ejected late in the third
for a fighting Infraction.
Acadia was the only unbeaten team before UPEI blemished their record and now UPEI stands atop the AUAA conference with an unbeaten six-game string.
Greg Gravel had a good
weekend, with eight points, along with Randy Muttart who had seven points.
Jeff Steffen and Albert Roche added five points each.
Men’s basketball
The UPEI men’s basket- ball Panthers had their first real test last ,weekend in Montreal at a tournament hosted by the McGill Red- men.
UPEI defeated the host Redmen Friday (sorry, we don’t know the scores), while on Saturday the team tri- umphed over Biship’s in its second game. '
On Sunday the UPEI con— tingent went down to St.
. _ Thomas College of Vermont.
The Panthers open the AUAA season this week- end against the University of New Brunswick. Games are 7 pm. Friday and 1 pm. Saturday, both at the Alumni Gymnasium.
VoHeybaH team wins
The UPEI women’s volley- ball team won two matches on the weekend against Memorial University of Newfoundland to open their regular AUAA season at the Alumni Gymnasium.
Friday night UPEI won by a 3—2 tally, and on Saturday the squad defeated MUN 3—1.
They play this weekend against Moncton and are off to a fine start.
Hopefully the Panthers will make it to a playoff spot this year, since the team seems to be much improved and more experienced.
Athletes of the Week

Linda Dykerman is U.P.E.I.’s female athlete of the week. Linda led the U.P.E.I. lady Panther vol- leyball team to two wins in their first two matches of the season, 3-2 and 3-l over Memorial University. Linda recorded thirty-two kills, six service aces and five stuffed blocks. '
Linda is a second year Arts student from Brook- field, P.E.I.
U.P,E.l.’s male athlete of the week is Greg Gravel. Greg scored eight points on the weekend to help the hockey Panthers to their fifth and sixth consecutive wins for the season. The Pan- thers defeated Dalhousie on Saturday 12—4 and Acadia on Sunday 6-2.
Greg’s eight points on the weekend pushes his point total to fourteen for the sea- son. Greg is from Kapus Kasing, Ontario, and is in his second year of Business here at U.P.E.I.
