A Golden Anniversary

A pioneer in co-operative enterprise in this Province, the Newt Perth Dairying Company, established fifty years ago, is still in s flourish- ing condition. To mark its golden anniversary, Mr, john A. Dewar, only surviving member of its charter board of directors, has written an interesting and informative sketch 0f the Com- pany‘s early history. The first installment ap- pears on this page of today's Guardian. \Ve commend it and the succeeding installments to the attention of all our readers, especially those interested in co-operativc farming in all its branches. There is much t0 be learned from the success achieved by the dairymcn of New Perth, not least being the importance of educa- tion, sound judgment and initiative. Mr. Dewar, who is a former member of the Legislature as well as an outstandingly successful farmer and dairyman, knows whereof he speaks when he ltresgca these, qualifications. They are neces- sary, of course, to success in every field; but in co-operative cittcrpriss they may be said to be the Alpha. and (Dmcga.

Book Of Remberance

{Tori years of work have gone into the mak- hg of the Book of Remembrance, which con- tains the names of 66.500 Canadians who gave their gallant lives for Canada in the Great War. Its pcrrnanent home is to be the Memorial Chambcf of Ottawa's Peace Tower, where it will be placed on November 11, Remembrance Day.

This precious volume will be kept in a. lass case, but a. pliotostatic copy is to be avai able to those who want to see the names of rela- tives or friends.

The Mcrnrfrial Chamber is, of course, the proper permanent home of the Book of Re- mcbrance. But, suggests the Ottawa Journal, after the ceremonies of November 11 this bit of the heart 0f Canada might well be taken 0n n brief tour of the country. It could be ex- hibited, ivith the accompanying photographed copy, in the Legislative Chambers of the nine provincial capitals, undoubtedly it would be studied everywhere with reverence and gratitude.

This is an excellent suggestion and well worthy of c-iiwirliu-ziziiiii by the powers that be.

A reduc- tion in submarine dangers is cited in the an- nouncement that cargo war risk insurance on shipments from United States gulf ports to the east coast of South America, south of Para- maribo, has been cut to 12 1-2 per cent from r5 per cent. A survey made by department store mer- chandise managers shows that earlyChristmas shoppers, despite wartime curtailments, will have a nearly normal selection from which to choose their gifts in retail stores. Generally speaking, more than 90 per cent of the kind of things cus- tomarily sold at Christmas time will be avail- able this season, according to report, which adds: “Goods manufactured while the nation was still at peace and ordered before the conversion of many plants to war-production, will provide, for this year at least, many of the items customarily seen on retailers’ Christmas counters."

Military charges of an "appropriate" nature, allegedly concerning bribery and corruption to bring about the release of “trainees” on medial] grounds and involving a district Membgf of Parliament, are being studied by the department of the Judge Advocate General, Quebec, and the local divisional headquarters of Military Dis- trict No. 5. By the Montreal's new City Charter, coun- cillors tnust be actual residents and taxpayers of the city. Under the terms of the amend- ment eight councillors in “C" category do not have this qualification, and the associations which they represent will have to make other nominations. Two of the appointees of both McGill University and the City Improve- ment League will also be affected by the law. Among those losing seats are Councillors N. C. Poison, R. B. History of New Perth Dairying Company 1892-1942

As the New Perth Dairying Company is in this year 1942 cele- brating the lden anniversary of an organlzat on devoted t0 the Golden Rule Ln business, it, has been suggested to me, as I am the only living member of the first or charter board of directors, that I should write a short sketch of the early ltistory of a great. industry which from a. small beginning spread like a blessing all over our beautiful Island Province.

While the Hon. James G. Gur- diner, Dominion Minister of Agri- culture, was passing through New Perth one year ago, the plant of the Company was drawn to his at- tention, and he remarked that fifty years seemed a long time for s. co- operative to llve. And yet it still lives-to use the words of a great writer-“not in decay, not a mere antiquity, but full of llfe and youthful vigor." It has avoided the shoal of debt upon which oth- er companies have foundered and is perfectly solvent, with s. ne- serve surplus ‘traits treasury.

The summer season of 1892 was dry. but. after harvest the drought was broken by a copious supply 0f ruin which grew a wonderful crop of after grass and caused the manager, Mr. Dillon, to remark that. we received more milk in September than any other month, a condition that was never before known in the history of dalrylng. After the lapse of fifty years, his- tory has repeated itself. The sup- ply of cream received this sum- mer constitutes a record. With a restricted territory rad several lruclcs of other companies moving through its natural bounds, it. was necessary to install an extra pas- teurizer, and on the 31st. day of August, a month considered the slackest of the summer. more cream was received than on any other day during the season or any past season. In addition to the pusturlzcr, every empty con- tainer in the‘ factory failed to hold the supply received. and 2,000 lbs. or 20 per cent more cream was received for August than during the month of July. And with the super-abundant supply of after grass and fodder we may look for similar heavy returns for Septem- ber

From the time o! the earliest settlers when cows were first kept. butter and cheese have been manu- factured at home from cream and milk as a family necessity. Any small sur his would be bartered for grocer es at the village store. But not. until the year 1883 was there any system of "dalrylng" for profit. when cheese factories began to be erected. Those were erectfld at, Dunk River and St. Eleanors in Prince County, and Mlllvtew and Cornwall in Queen's. After a short. time in operation the one at Mlllview was destroyed by fire and was not rebuilt. Through time they all ceased to operate with the exception of St. Elernors, which did good service supplying the local trade, until eventual y crowded ‘out.
