Black Ducks Appear Late; Farmer Makes A Complaint

The month of June is nearing the halfway mark with the tem- perature definitely on the cold side. We be a few afternoons when it was pleasant and rea- Sonably warm but the only real hot day we had was on thth. The black flies and mosquitoes sure enjoyed that one. Fresh ware.- trout fishing has been disappointing on the whole but anglers who favor seaward bars have created some silvery beau- ties. This type of angling re- quires both time and patience. One angler stated that if he creeled two per hour he was quite satisfied. A pound and a quarter sea trout can put up quite a battle before its silvery scales whitens one palm

The black duck hatch appears to be late this spring and only one medium sized brood has been reported to date. The teal and ring-necked ducks e late nesters and it will be some time before their broods are on the move. There appears to be a normal spring outlook for blacks. maybe slightly in ex- cess of last spring. but rood results were down an approx- imate 33 per cent in 1963. No definite report has been receiv- ed to date as to whether ster- ility was the cause although this angler has top priority with some wildlife officials. Poi- son residue from spraying has reduced cock pheasants, In a number of specific areas in the States, into top grade “sissies'. They assumed the drab color- ing of their consorts and their courting ardor vanished to the point where it was not notice- able. in short they had nothing to crow about. At the moment uhat the 1964 hunting season holds with respect to black ducks is pure guess work. Me- thinks our black duck drakes. although they haven't lost their coloring like cock pheasants. are showing their loss of man- hood in another way. I watch- ed one this Spring conducting an aerial courtship and i not- ed a change in his ‘quacks.’ Maybe he was suffering from an attack of laryngitis but his roice had most certainly lost Its masculine tone.

A few days ago 1 received a complaint from a farmer re- garding tin-.3 bounty removal from crows. Apparently this former was doing some fencing at the rear of his farm. He is observant and observed a black duck take wing from an ooen hold a few feet from a fence that sported some bushy spruce and fir trees along its margin. Looking under the third bush cxamined he found a nest of duck eggs. 1 do not know whe- ther or not he visited the nest site the second time but his hel- per did. Apparently Mr. Jim

I remember long years ago the late Trueman Jenkins a first cousin of mine. telling me about a black duck nest he and two helpers found while doing some road clearing on a sec- ondary dirt road. They saw this duck slip from under a squat spruce bush at roadside. On their way home to dinner they made the mistake of again visiting the nest site to see if duck had returned. , . had. He told me he knew it was a mistake making the second visit for when he straightened up from his inspection he saw a crow watching him from a nearby spruce spire. His fears were well grounded. The nest had been ramsacked while he was at dinner. Every egg had a neat hole In one end. All that afternoon a pair of crows kept them under observation in the hope. according to True. that they would stir out another duckMoral : If you find a nest, whether it be of duck. grouse, pheasant or Hun don't repeat the visit.
