Tus annual meeting at Moosepath Driving Park, St. John, took place on Thursday. Three races took place, viz: the 2.50, running race and free-for-all. Honest Tom captured the free-for-all with Messenger Boy (recently sold by Mr. A. N. Large) second, Charlie Morris third. The time was 2.40, 2.41 and 2.42. The running race was won by Sleepy Tom. The 2.50 race was unfinished,

Owtne to the difficulty in procuring boats, weare authorized to say that it is Captain Davies’ intention to run the “Griffon” along- side one of the piers and throw her open to the public for a day before she proceeds to sea. This will, we have no doubt, give great satisfaction to persons desirous of seeing H. M. 8. “Griffon,” and Captain Davies being the first Islander who has commanded one of Her Majesty’s ships the kindness thus shown will be taken advantage of by his fellow townspeople.

W. H. Lyncu, Ese., of Quebec, who is now emploved by the Quebec and Ontario Govern- m ts to writea work on the dairy, being thoroughly versed in dairy work, having made it a study for years, has sold the patent right for this island of his Rotary Churn to R. K. Brace, and will be at our exhibition to give instructions how to work this churn. It is made on the same principle as those used in the English Dairy department now at work at the St. John Exhibition. It will only cost about half the price and has some improve- ments far ahead of the English Patent Churns. Every butter maker on P. E. Island should see Mr. Lynch as he will be pleased to give any information that is required on butter making.

Tue first meeting of the Provincial Edu- cational Association will be held on Monday next, in the Prince Street School, beginning at 10.30 o'clock. At this session Miss Mitchell, of the Prince Street School, will give an exhibition lesson with a class, after which the Rev. J. Burwash will read a paper on Science in Common Schools, which he will illustrate with a few experiments. In the afternoon Professor Caven and Mr. Tf. A. LePage. will read papers. Inthe evening a — meating will be held in the hall of the
ince’ Street School, to commence at 5 o'clock. It is expected that over 100 teachers from all parts of the Island will be in attend- ance, and we have no doubt but that the meeting will be an interesting and profitable one,

WILLARD is now on & visit tothe Provinces, She has been before the public of the United States for several years, and has won a wide reputation as an educationist and a platform speaker. Latter- ly she has been engaged in temperance work, and she is now the president of the Wo- men’s National Christian Union of the United States. In pursuance of her work she has Visited all parts of the union lecturing to _ audiences on the evils of intemperance, and especially seeking to engage women in the temperance movement. An American author- ity says that ‘‘as a public speaker Miss Williard is without a peer among women. With much of Edward Everett in her language there is more of Wendell Phillips in manner of delivery.” Miss Williard will shortly lee- ture in this city. There is a great necessity forthe active and enthusiastic advocacy of this reform here.

} Painsac, Oct. 6. The live stock is at Point da Chene on the way home. The Island won one hun- dred and fifty prizes, eleven hundred and fifty dollars, four medals and_ several | diplomas.

Ashore— Drowned, Souris, Oct. 6.
A large sail boat came ashore yesterday at the inlet near Campbell’s Cove, on the north side. On beard were two boys named Lantaigue, belonging to Caraquet, N. B. They state that during a gale on Monday they were blown off to sea, and that their father was washed overboard and drowned. The two poor boys suffered great privations. lhey are now staying in Souris.
ANOTHER ACCOUNT.
Further particulars concerning the fish- ing boat that came ashore at the Inlet west of Campbell’s Cove Breakwater, yesterday afternoon, at 2 o’clock, have reached us. In the boat were two young boys azed twelve and fourteen years, nearly frozen with the cold, and famished with hunger. The boys were French, and there being nobody in the vicinity able to talk the language but indifferently well, some difficulty was experienced in getting a minute account of their mishap. But as far as can be learned they, in company with their father, were fishing off Percy, and a squall springing up carried them out to sea. This would be on last. The
Tuesday gale continuing, it was as much as the man _ could do to manage the boat. Sometime
through the night, sad to say, the man was lost overboard, and in the morning the two young boys only waked to find that they were alone, at the mercy of the sea. The eldest of the boys took charge of the boat which, being driven before the wind, was carried along towards the Eastern end of the Island, and was cast high and dry upon the shore at the inlet as before stated. The boys are yet in that Section of the Island, and awake much sympathy by their sad condition and serious loss. Everything will doubtless be done by the good people there
