The late Mr. James Crossman of Summerside, who died on Sunday under tragic circumstances, for the long period of sixty years had been s faithful and diligent mem- ber cf the lob-printing department of the Summersida Journal and for many years its capable fore- man printer.

He was '73 years of age. He is survived by his widow and the following children, all residing in Summeraide: Harry, Lloyd and

A‘ l lIlNil-IMB of the council of the Summerside Board of Trade yesterday, a motion was unanim- ously passed protesting against the location chosen for the new Fed- eral building on the former Allen proipenty on the corner of Sum- mer and Church Streets. Opposi- tion to this site is based on the fact that the property 15 to.) small and will be completely fili- ed by the building, also that the streets are narrow st this point and than would be traffic con- gestion.

Copies ocf the resolution are to be sent to the Minister of Public Works, the Federal member, Mr. J. Watson MacNaught, Parliamen- tsry assistant to the Minister of Fisheries.

While no alternate site was suggested, above a year ago Mayor Arnett gave an interview to this paper suggesting that the Gov- ernment and the Town might negotiate s trade, with ‘the Gov- ermnent receiving the former Saunders property on Central Street, which is about four times as large. If a Federal building were buillflhere, there would be plenty of room for landscaping and beautifying the property; also there would be much more park- ing space. in this trade the Town would get the Allen properly, which is adjacent to the Memorial Park and could be integrated iptn this square, which is much too small for its purpose. No doubt if such a deal went through the Town would insist on some pay- ment as the Saunders property is more valuable than the Ailcn pro- perty, being larger. —S

On motion of Councillor J. L. Gorril, seconded by Counciilcr- Henry Wedge the sum of $1000.00 was granted to the Canadian Leg- ion towards the formation of a band and the purchase of instru- ments io he given in two equal yearly payments. The agreement with the grant is that the band will turn out any time at the re- quest of the Council.

Councillor Wedge rc-porting for the street committee said that fne new tractor plow that has been acquired was given a work-out in lhe recent storm and seems satis- factory. He said that the work of the plows was made very diffi- cult by peopie ‘parking their cars on the streets ail night. He also said that a number of cars bocsm" stuck in the middle of streets and were left there all night. 'l‘hi< would be a menace in the even‘. of a fire. he said.

Mayor Arnett suggested that car= parked on streets all night should be towed away and the owners charged when they came to claim them. Councillor T. D. Morrison said that the footings and foundation have been installed for the ad- dition to the electric light plant. He also reported that the loads at the plant have .been the highest experienced in several years. He said that they were as high as 1.700 kilowatts. The new unit to be in- stalled will be s safety factor in case cf a breakdown. Councillor H. B. Schurmsn re- ported that he had attended a meeting of the citizens committee 0n the new rink proposition and he said that the committee did not want anything ciaiborate in the way of a community center. He ex- plained that the comvmiftco has no funds to spend to get information from other places that have built rinks and suggested that the town send a man to Backville to inspect a rink there. He withdrew from civic affairs at the end of that term but. came back in 1945 to contest the vacancy caused by the death of Mayor W. J. Lldstone. He was elm-led and was ic-clectcd by acclamation in i946 and again in 1948. lvir. Arnett is president of the wholesale firm of Rogers and Arnett Ltd.
