With respect to the other matter, every opportunity which offers for ven- tilating it, gives Tur Examiner pleasure; for “Truth like a torch, the more its shook the more it shines.’’ The Herald admits that, ‘if the Woollen Company were compelled to drain the pond and clean it, an iujusiiee would be done them.” Why? Because the pood has evidently been polluted by the sewage of two tavuneries, and a large part of the city, as well as of the Woollen Factory. The tagneries andthe citizeas have had full liberty to empty their slops into the Pond ; aod it would be unfair to compel the Woollen Company to provide a separate sewer for the slops from their fac- tory. But suppose ao action brought for that purpose, and the Company com- pelled to do so, everyone, even . the Herald, would see that a wrong haa been done. Now this suppositious case is, in principle, exactly like the actual ease. The owvers of Spring Park Brook require that the water in it to be pure. But instead of entering an action against all who contaminate it, they begau by entering an action against the Woollen Company alone; aud the Woollen Company alone are compelled to buy a right of way aod bnild a sewer. Will the citizens permit the Company to

will still necessarily be impure and the owners of the brook will then, as they might have done at the first, enter an action against the City, and force the corporation to build a sewer to carry away the City sewage ; (2) it is impolitic to handicap, unvecessarily or unfairly, auy factory; for on the Jabor doue in its factories depends the prosperity of the city; (3) the duty of the city to open drains and sewers being recognized, and Spring Park Brook being a receptacle for the sewage made in hundreds of houses, as well as that of the factory, the city should make the sewer required in order that the water of Spring Park Brook may be pure.

—A short time ago a correspondent called attention in our columns to the necessity for a new sidewalk to the Post Office. We are pleased to see that the authorities have acted in the ‘matter, audabat flew platforms are taking the plate of the decayed ones. While they are at Work, would it not be well to ex- tend the platform io the northern and northwestern entracces to the square, opposite Crabbe’s and Murray’s respect- ively. These approaches are very muddy in spring and fall, and almost im- passable. Inside’the post office building everything is as it should be: the halls are warm, clean, and well lighted—the clerks are attentive and courteous, aad we have heard strangers remark that few places ia the Dominion, having no delivery by carriers, afford such facilities to the public. We wish that the city fathers would learn a lesson by the promptness of the Dominion -authorities to attend 10 suggestions.

Excitement seemed to be the order of the day at County Line on Monday last, oceasion- ed, we understand, by the sub-contractors on the Cape Traverse Railway failing. to meet their obligations to their emyloyees. Messrs. Grey acd Wheaton, the contractors, claim that they are in no way ‘responsible for bills contracted by these to whom they have sub- let. This, we have no doubt, is true ‘nough, but we think such an arrangement will put many who are supplying those who it is claim- ed are the tesponsible parties, with lumber or labor, in a very awkward place, if they do uot get their respective bills secured at once, as they give no security, and may be totally irresponsible, Aay one can see that it would be a very easy matter for such persons to step out, (as we understand some of them have already done) and leave those to whom thev arein debt with nothing but a very slim pros-

Dean Srr,—I have often thought of

sending you and your readers my impress- ions of this westernland. [ have delayed for two reasons: the activities of a busy ministry occupy me, and I do not pretend to be so acute that, arriving here in Jaly, ! can see and describe everything in early November. I would like what I do say to be entirely reliable.

I nead some time ago in your paper a letter sent home to P. E. Island from some young man in Dakota, who had heard of some terrible things happening over here, ‘People dying siong the C. P. R, with the black leg,” and evils to numerous to mention cursing the country generally, Let me assure that gentleman, if this should ever meet his eye, that the disease is a moral one, and so far as my observation has gone, the most virulent type is on his side of the line. Let me tell you a story. After leavingj S.. Paul on our way up here some time during the night we were board- ed by a Dakota land agent. Finding some persons going to Manitoba and the North West, he became very sympathetic. He was so so’ry for the terrible experience that awaited thom if they persisted in passing through the best lands of the world and pushing out into a frozon waste. Why he assured them that he had just been inform- ed that snow was, at that moment, six inches deep in Winnipeg. A gentleman sitting near him drew him ont, and on, until supposing that he hada customer he offered him land. Land! exclaimed the heretofore somewhat reticent Britisher, ‘‘] would not have an acre of your land under any circumstances, cursed as it is, with wronged and murdered Indians. Why,” said he, warming to, his subject, ‘‘do you know that these tornadoes and cyclones that sweep with death and deso- lation over your praries, are but the shrieks and dying screams of murdered equaws and papooses, coming back from the spirit world. No. I go toaland where teachers and bibles are sent to the Indians. But I want no land cleared of its original owners by soldiers and bullets.’’ That was the way one Yankee land agent was disposed of. Account for it as you may, in this land we have no cyclones.

This is certainly a most fertile country. A magnificent harvest has just been gather- ed in, and is now being thrashed out and shipped east. I saw thousands of bushels down at the railway the other day of (1 was assured by a buyer) as fine wheat as any place in the world can produce, and this 1s produced from twenty-five to thirty (and sometimes more) bushels to the acre from land in most cases never manured, I have seen very fine crops of potatves m P. E. L, ‘but I have seen better here without manure and in this new land they are of excellent quality. My predecessor, in removing, left me a garden, most of it recently from the sod. A piece of about twelve feet square was devoted to onions. From this we used while they were growing, and had left to gather in autumn not less than a barrel. Carrots from the same garden I have measuring two feet in length; parsnips did equally as well. Turnips I saw at the fair nearly as big round as a barrel head, and beets will grow nearly as large as ordinary turnips east. Of course [am here speak- ing only of Southern Manitoba, as I have as yet not travelled beyond it; and I am not writing of what people tell me, but of what I see for myself. This and a great deal more I can say of the country. But I ought to go further and say, notwithstand- ing the salubrity of the climate, and won- derful fertility of the soil, yet at present this is a dear country to live in. Let me give you my experience: I sold a good driv- ing borse in P. E. Island for $70. I bought one not so good here for $140. I paid yess) terday for getting it shod $2. We like porridge for breakfast. You know what oatmeal is worth in P. E. I. ‘Here it-is ten cents per pound. We like a little-tea and some of my friends may remé@taber that I like it-sweetened well. “The tea is seveuty cents per lb. and the sugar seven 1Bs.for a dollar. East we could afford té eat ‘butch- er’s meat occasionally. Here I have D asked ahd have had to pa cents per lb, for steak. Since th weather set in it is less; and I think you will be surprised to learn that though pota- toes grow here almost spontaneously, yet fifty cents per ‘bushel was the price paid last spring for them. Mrs. C., on arriving was anxious to make some pre- serve for winter and brought a pail of wild resyberries but was not a little surprised to learn that the price was $2.50. ‘With rasp | berrios at $2 50 per pail and sugar at seven pounds per dollar you can see that jam is a luxury.

Everything was inflated ‘here by the ‘*Boom.”” But a short time now and things must, I think, get down to something near fair prices. With kind regards to many old friends in P. E. “Island, and intending when winter comes to write again if you wish it, I remain,

In Orwell there is but a small demand for produce, Mr. M. Stephens is as ener- getic as ever. He is now loading two schooners with potatoes at fifteen cents per bushel.

The Orwell Schoolhouse, which is in a delapidated condition, is to be renovated by Mr. John J. McDonald, who, no doubt, will do his endeavors to make the building as comfortable as possible for the coming of an almost Arctic winter.

Now the failure of one or two individuals should not be at- tributed toa wholecommunity. Mr. D. Me- Donald has fed several porkers on the beet which he cultivated on his own farm. He approves very much of beet feeding eccom- panied with an occasional feed of barley.

“Old Tar,” accompanied by ‘Jack Frost,” paid a flying visit to Orwell on Sunday last, which seems as it were to cast a gloom over the enchanting hills and dale: of Orwell. Now “Old Tar’ and his asso- ciate might remain away for some time, until the people make ready for worthy reception of both.

Mr. Ronald MeDonald sold his beautiful draft stallion, Gap Prince, for the sum of $100.

‘Florence May” and crew of this place has cast a gloom ever the village. The crew were William Furlong, master, formerly of St. John’s, Newfoundland, a good, quiet and industrious neighbor, a good provider for his family, and well liked by all who came in contact with him; strictly honest and honorable in his dealings he does not leave an enemy behind him, We will miss Captain Furlong. Nomore will we have the pleasure of welcoming him home. No more will the fond wife and __ little prattlers run to meet their bread winner. A wife left husbandless and four helpless children left fatherless. With Captain Furlong was his step-son, James Edward Crawford, a fine, steady, sober young man, with bright prospects before him. He returned only a few weeks ago to his home after an absence of some two years in foreign countries. Little any of us thought when we were giving hima well- deserved and hearty welcome that so soon we would be mourning his loss, To the wife and mother who is doubly bereaved, and the sister who mourns the loss of a kind and affectionate brother, we tender our sincerest sympathy, and with them we are not ashamed to shed the tear of sorrow. We can only bow to the rod that chasteneth, and say ‘Thy will be done.” W, B. Clark, Esq., well and favor- ably known in business circles in years gone by, was also one of the crew.
