Agricultural Business

The business of farming was the concern of the annual meeting of the P. E. I. Fed- oration of Agriculture last night and the President's report for the financial year must have been a highly gratifying one. Because of a combination of excellent crops- and excellent prices the members are in a decidedly enviable position. The Federation itself was instrumental in guiding the farm- ers in taking advantage of favourable cir- cumstances. President Yeo pointed out that because of the late potato planting season here it is possible to adopt policies in the light of what has already been done in, other areas. g

The guest speaker, herself an Islandeinl hut representing the Nova Scotian and na- tional organizations, proposed that a strongi Maritinie and Newfoundland federation bcl set up to further production, marketing and, distribution schemes. The meeting appar-3 cntiy carried the idea a bit further and proposed that uniformity of Provincial or- ganization be established throughout ihel country.

A number of the resolutions dealt Witlll farm problems such as those on the lime- stone assistance policy and livestock breed- ing, but more were concerned with the? market in which the farmer must disposci of his products: the stimulation of tradej with the. United Kingdom, opposition to- substitutes for dairy products, support for the Canadian Wheat Board and elimination of the grain exchange and putting agricul- ture in its proper place in the defence pic-I ture.

The organized farmers got away fi'om immediate dollars and cents, however, and gave a thought to the future of the land

Rabciais, a non-political society dedicated to the promotion of world-wide laughter. This is recorded in a recent news item from Paris.

The jovial lfwth-century monk who cre- ated the fantastical characters of Gargantua and Pantragruci was the unwitting patron of this unique society, which sprang up after the Second World War, its organ- izcrs being two Americans, 'Girard and Kathleen Hale of Santa Barbara. The lialcs were living in the French village of Maille, near Tours, when they heard that the nearby farmhouse where Rabelais was born in 1490 was falling into disrepair. A local French society was doing what it could hilt lacked funds to establish a Ra- bclais museum. So the Hales founded the Companions of Rabelais, who undertook to love their fellow-men, treasure liberty of thought, believe, with Rabclais, that ”laugh- ter is the right of man," and agree to give some measure of friendship and hospitality to fellow Rabelaisians throughout the world. The Companions now have 8. club- room in the cellar of the farmhouse. The French Government is taking an interest in its development. The Mini'stry of Fine Arts is aiding in the restoration work and the post office has issued 8 special 12-franc Rabeiais stamp. '

About half the Companions are Amer- icans, the rest being spread over twenty- three countries, including Britain, France, Italy, Austria, Germany, Switzerland, Scan- dinavia, Turkey, India, Egypt and the Ar- gentine. Canada's former Prime Minister is listed among the Companions' famous names. Others are David K. Bruce, U. S. Assistant Secretary of State; Prince Sadri Aga Khan; Sir Laurence and Lady Olivier; Princess Alexandria of Greece; opera star Helen Traubel, and Helen Keller.

The late Mr. King's place in the merry ensemble is rather surprising. A Rabei- aisian jest would be the last thing one would expect from that sedate statesman, but per- haps he fclt the temptation of making one during many a stuffy session of Parlia- ment. At any rate his hitherto unknown connection with this league of laughter- lovers has now been revealed.
