At once Peter was tilled with cur- iosity. He wanted to. know what Old Mr. Toad had been doing down in the earth.

"Nothing," replied Old Mr. Toad. "But you must have been doing something down in there. it Il0i., what did you go down in there i'or?”5 persisted Peter.

There was 1, twinkle in those golden eyes as old Mr. Toad re- plied. "To do nothing.”

Peter remembered something. "I know." he cried. "You wercl sleeping down there. That was do- in something. Did you enjoy your sleep?"

”No." replied Old Mr. Toad. "No. I didn't enjoy It.''

Peter looked a little surprised; "That's too had." said he. "What .was the matter?"

"Nothing was the matter. No-' thing at all.” replied Old Mr. Toad.

"Then why didn't you enjoy it?"l Peter promptly wanted to know. I

"Because I didn't know anytliingi about it." replied Old Mr. 'I'oaci.. The twinkle was back in his eyes.

"Did you dig yourself in there?" asked Peter.

How could he when all through the cold winter months of snow and ice. or Jack Frost and rough Brother North Wind, he had been very, very sound asleep where the latter could not reach him? Old Mr. Toad hop- ped two or three steps. "My legs feel a little stiff." he complained.

"I should think they would." said I Peter. "I wonder that you can use them at all." There was a sudden gleam in Old Mr. Toads golden eyes. He leaned forward. He open- ed his big mouth. A long tongue shot out and back in a pink flash that Peter didn't see because of the dusk. The big mouth closed and Old Mr. Toad swallowed a couple 01 times. His face wore a happy. sat- isfied look. Peter wondered what had become of 9. small worm he had seen crawling past Old Mr. Toad.

"It is good to be awake," said Old Mr. Toad and off he went. hop. hop, hop. to disappear under a wide board near the rhubarb. He had lived under that board for several summers.
