An English paper says: A party of igentlemen assembled the other day ona quiet corner of Wimbledon common, near _Rochampton, for the purpose of witnessing |@ trial of Serjeant’s new safety rein. The invention, lke many other useful and , beneficent discoveries, is of the simplest | character, and the natural impression pro- duced by the first inspection is a feeling of wonder that no one ever thought of it be- fore. It may seem a marvellous statement, but really the principle of the invention is this, that in driving or riding, the tail of horse is a more important factor than the | head, so that all these years people have |been steering the animal from the wrong jend. Mr, Serjeant’s reins are nearly twice {as long as the ordinary pattern, and instead | of being fastened to the bit are secured to a ring on the crupper or tail strap. driver. The inventor claims for his rein that it guarantees perfect safety, and pre- vents the cruelty of a bearing-rein ora severe bit. He alleges it will check the runaway, and cure the most determined jibber, kicker, or _ bolter, while it renders it impossible for a horse to indulge in such upleasant _prac- tices as pulling, shying, star-gazing or buck-jumping. Remembering that scarcely a day passes without the occur- rence of some serious and even fatal ac- cidents from horses shying and bolting, this invention merits the fullest investiga- tion and experiment, and, if it proved to tiulfl expectations, it well deserves to be brought into general use. The experi- ments carried out were satisfactory so far as they went. Half a dozen of the most vicious-looking specimens of the equine family that could be got together at ortce were assmbled for trial. To make the test complete these animals should, of course, have been driven with an ordinary rein first, but no one present was inclined to at- tempt the task. The first selection was a thoroughbred chestnut mare with a vicious eye, bua a pretty creature enough to look at. She was said to be an incurable kicker and to have an inveterate dislike to any rein whatever. After a brief show of puzzled fretfulness she succumbed grace- iully, and described a circle as tamely as any circus performer. A black mare gave a great deal more trouble. Anyone could see what a rogue she was; bad temper bristled from every point, and her legs and hocks were covered with sores old and new, the results of numerous mad freaks. She tried all she knew for fully twenty minutes te kick, rear, and bite, but eventualiy gave in to the novel force that had been applied. No. 3 was a hot-headed grey hunter, who accepted the situation after a very brief contest. Then a kicking mare, that had smashed many atrap, wat brought on the scene, but after capering about and vainly trying to indulge her special weakness, she, too, made a virtue of necessity. A con- tirmed bolter was the last to bear testimony to the eflicacy of the new system. There was a sixth in reserve, an Irish mare who had manifested a strong penchant for jump- ing through shop windows when oppor- tunity vifered, and whose vrdinary methods, when in harness, included rearing, jibbing, and lying down inthe road. Unfortunately she had so damaged her forelegs overnight in the stable that she was too lame to be experimented upon. These sorry speci- mens of the noble but vicious animal had been collected at a day’s notice, and had never befure been tried with the new rein, but none of them succeeded in opposing any successful resistance. A New Comic Opera.

London advices say that Sir Arthur Sullivan and Mr. Gilbert wi!l come before the public in the latter part of November at the Savoy Theatre with a new light opera, which is still without a name. Though the piece has not been read yet, a chorus rehearse! has been held at the Savoy with locked doors and other symptoms of secrecy. ‘I e subject of the new opera is a Venetian Doge, who is the principal cha- racter. By ties of birth and association hé is an aristocrat, at heart he is a thorough tepublican, Hie goes among the people in disguise and urges them to upset the Doge. The Council of Ten finally obliges him to take an oath to kill the man of the people, and the populace on the other hand then compels him to swear to kill the Doge. The principal character is thus apparently on the brink of a precipice, but is rescued by Gilbert in his usual happy manner, The new opera will not differ from other efferts of Mr. Gilbert. The Council of Ten will have a thumb-twiddling chorus, and a lot of Venetian noblemen will sing *‘We are young men of Venice,” and play at lawn tennis in jackets of various hues. Some of the principal characters visited Sir Arthur Sullivan a couple of days ago. He played some of the concerted pieces for them.

Successful Surgery.

In the Lancet for Dec. 20, 1884, Dr. Bennett and Mr. Godlee published an article which startled the surgical world. Dr. Bennett had diagnosticated not only the existence, but the exact locality of a tumor in the brain, of which not the least visible evidence existed on the exterior of the skull, and asked Mr. Godlee to attempt its removal. The head was opened, and the brain exposed. No tumor was szen, but so certain were they of the diagnosis that Mr. Godiee boldly cut open the healthy brain, and discovered a tumor the size of a walnut, and removed it. After doing well for three weeks inflammation set in, and the patient died on the 26th day. But, like the failure of the first Atlantic cable, it pointed the way to success, and now there have been 20 tumors remove] from the brain, of which 17 have been removed from the cerebrum, with 13 recoverivs, and three from the more dangerous reyion of the cerebellum, all of which proved fatal. Until this recent innovation every case of tumor of the brain was absolutely hopeless. The size of the tumors successfully removed has added to the astonishment with which surgeons view the fact of their ability to remove them at all. Tumors measuring as muchas three and four incies in dia- meter, and weighing from a quarter to over a third of a pound, have been removed, and the patients have recovered.

Savings the Foundation of Wealth.

The man who saves something every year, quotes a contemporary, who had heard the remark from every quarter, is on jthe road to prosperity. It may not be possible to save much. If not, save a little. Do not think that a dollar or a dime is tou smallasum to lay by. “verybody knows how little expendicures get away with lasge sums But few seem to know that the rule is one that works both ways. If a dime spent here and a dollar there soon makes a large hole ina man’s income, so do dimes and dollars laid away soon become a visible and respectable accumulation. In this country any man can make himself inde- pendent or keep himself under the harrow for life, according as he saves or wastes his small change.

end of this century a population of wearly 90,000,000 (89,653,343), by the middle of the next century 383,763,837, and before

that the appliance is simple aad graceful, and, if anything, rather impreves the general appearance of a horse in harness. Mr. Serjeant, who has had experience in training horses in several parts of the globe, has had the benetit of the advice, in this country, of Dr. Northcott, who has long taken a practical interest iu the best methods of securing safety and preventing cruelty in driving.
