FUNERAL HELD - The funer- al of the late Mrs. Lydia I-Iowatt. formerly of Carleton, was held Saturday afternoon. A short ser- vice was held at the home of Mrs. Spurgeon Clark of Ti-yon. This was followed by service in the United Church at Cape Traverse. Both services at 'I'ryon and Cape Traverse were conducted by Rev. R L. Bacon. The pail-bearers were: Asher Howatt. LOCAL CHEESE PR.ICE.Local cheese will sell for at least 37 cents ii pound this year stated Mr. Lincoln Dewar, secretary of the Provincial Dairymen's Associ- ation. Saturday after receiving word that the Ontario Cheese Pro- ducers Board had finallzed an agreement to ship Great Britain 20 million pounds of cheese at 32 cents a pound this year. This price, he stated, is equivalent to 30 cents F.O.B. factory of b3.00 per ioo pounds of 3.5 milk. ,

CITY POLICE COURT - Al; the stipendinry Magistrate's Court yesterday, seven men charged with being drunk and incapable ap- peared. one was sentenced to 20 days in jail. three fined :10 and costs or 10 days in jail each, two fined 55 and costs or 10 days each. while one was remanded until to- day. A man charged with both drunkeness and vagrancy was sentenced to 30 days in Jail. while another charged with vagfancy was sentenced to 10 days in jail. OTTAWA-The minor rhubarb in the Commons Thursday which saw P.C. leader Drew and Finance Minister Abbott sputtering at each other like a couple of infuriated wmcats had its cause rooted deep in partisan politics.

yDrew opened the festivities by Reusing Abbott of laughing at what he was saying about the h u g a Government expenditures on defence, and of exhibiting a "smart-aleck attitude."

Abbott shot back a remark in- dicating he didn't think Drew was worth listening to, and Tom Goode (Lib., Burnaby-Richmond. B C.) leaped into the fray to ac- cuse Drew of not listening to De- fence. Minister Claxton.

Drew called Goode's reference to his not having been in the Com- mons when Claxton spoke "a tawdry and smart-aleck. remark." and explained he'd read what Claxton had said.

"Before any suggestion is made that every member of the Oppo- sition has not spent every hour in this house," Drew said, "look at the front ranks of the Govern- ment benches."

Few things anger an MP. so much as having public attention called to his absence from Com- mons debates. To the voters back home, it looks as though he's shirking the nation's business.

Actually, he,may be-but the likelihood is that he isn't. Com- mons sit six hours a day, but for an M. P. to spend all that time in his Commons seat each day would mean that his many other duties would suffer. He has to sit on committees. sec delegations, inter- view officials. attend caucuses. carry on heavy correspondence. read reports. and spend long hours preparing speeches. That's why the Commons is usually half-'emp- ty. to the surprise of visitors.

For 84 years Grits have been accusing Tories and Tories accus- ing Grits ol being Parliamentary slackers-all for the benefit of the voters back home. At this Mac- kenzie King was a past master. While in Opposition from i930 to 1935, he used to needle Prime Minister Bennett unmercifuliy by waiting until Bennett was half way out of the Chamber, and then rising with a question prefaced by a remark like.

”I deem it unfortunate that the Prime Minister sees fit to walk out of the Chamber at this time. when matters of publiclmportance are being discussed..."

That always brought R.B. steam- ing back to his seat. And probably the high Government official he was on his way out to confer with would have to cool his heels in the P M.'s anteroom for another half hour while Bennett put on the record, in Ifansard. proof that he wasn't walking out on matters which demanded his attention.

It seemed a little matter which brought Premier Walter Jones and some members of his P. E. I. cab- inet to Ottawa last week-the de- sire of the C. N. R. to abandon rail service betivcen Charlottetown and Southport.

They oppose the plan-mainly. it seems, because it would enable the C.N.R. to escape replacing the antiquated I-Iillsborough railway- highway bridge. on P.E.I.'s Trans- Canada link. If rail service were dropped. the Province would have to spend three or four million dol- lars on a new highway bridge.

What the 0.N.R.. has in mind. however, is an experiment which might affect many other parts of Canada. The plan is to replace the train service with a C. NR. bus and truck service. If it works. other Provinces may find the rail- ways wanting to abandon rail

Mrs. Heber Barrett was hostess to the Evening Auxiliary of the Kingston United Church. Tllhe president, Mrs. Zelpha New on conducted business matters in her usual manner. A large attendance was present. Readings were con- ducted by Mrs. Carl Willis and Mrs. Edgar Newson. It was decided to invite the Pownal Play. The meeting was brought to a close by singing a hymn. A delicious lunch was served by the hostus. assisted by committee in charge.

Mrs. Zelpha Newson entertained the Kingston W. I. on Thursday evening. May 3rd. In the absence of the president and vicc-presid- exit. the honorary president, Mrs. Carl Willis conducted the meet- ing. Reports werc heard from school and sick committees. Then followed a ulscussioii regarding a play to come to the hall. School committee was rc-appointed A short program was conducted by Edna'Colwill and Shirley NeWSOn- It was moved and seconded that all membe s so to Glenn the school room. The meeting W35 adjourned and a delicious lunch was served by the hostess assisted by the committee in charge.
