United States Fishing Interests.

Che Fishing ioterests of the United States are preparing to kick against the renewal of reciprocity with The Fish: » Gazette of New York Says: “There is only one question relative to the fishing industry on which the Pro- vin solidly unite, and that is the admission of fish into United States ports free of duty. With the entering wedge lately obtained by them, looking to a reciprocity treaty at the coming session of Congress, it behooves our fishermen to be wide awake, during the summer and fall, to their own interests, and be prepared to oppose any plan of treaty thai shall be to their detriment.”

Additional Indemnity.

This is the view of members of the House of Commons and of the Montreal Gazetie,—but not of the country:

“The question of an increased indemnity this year, in view cf the inordinate levgth ef the session, is said to bea prominent topic of conversation at Ottawa. Most persons will think that the members well deserve some additional compensation for the time they have given to the business of Parliament. At best this indemnity

is _ little more than a nominal me, scarcely suflicing to meet the expenses of cn ordinary session ;

while this year business and professional men have given half the year to the duties of their position, and cannot but have suffered pecuniarily in consequence, A

permanent addition to the indemnity would

be a mistake and an unpopular action, but |

under the excepticnal circumstances of the present session - temporary incremenf would not, we believe, be begrudged.

The opinion of the country is that an increase to the indemnity of members would be a premium on obstruction and a vicious and dapvgerous precedent to set. The people of the country think that $1000 is quite as much as most of the members are worth (as legislators) even though they have to stay in Oitawa the whole year; and that those who are worth more took the risks of obstruc- tion when they took the positiou, and ought not to complain or cry out for more pay. To add to the indemnity of every member of the Sevate and Com- mons, because the public business has been hindered by partizan ocbstructives, would be folly and would injure the Government (who hold the purse strings) much more than it would the Oppo- sition.

The Pension Order.

An order in-council has been passed fix- ing the gratuities granied to parents or relatives of those who were killed or died on active service in the Northwest after March 20th, and fixing the pensions to wounded. A wounded officer may be grantel on the following scale :—Lieut.- Colone:. $1,200; major, $800; captain, $400; ientenant, $280. Claims must be made wit.:in five yeats. Soldiers’ pensions, according to nature of wound received— let degree, those unable to work requiring assistance ; 2ad degree, unable to work but can get on without assistance ; 3rd degree, partially disabled; 4th, very slightly—will be given on the following scale per day :—

The widow of the deceased officer or soldier will be granted an annual pension of one- haif the fall pay of deceased, and in ad- dition for the firat year a gratuity equal to twelve months py; children one-teuth the pay and for the firat year a gratuity equal to four months’ pay. Each child receives a compassionste allowance of one-thirteeth part of an officer’s or soldier's pay; boys to be under 18 and girls under 21. Payments will be made yearly in advance, The mother of an officer or soldier, being a widow in distressed circumstances, is allow- ed haif the rate of a widow. Sisters, under special circumstances, are also allowed one- half the rate of wittow’s pensions.

Temperance at Belfast.

The meeting of Grand Division camo off at Eldon on Tuesday and Wednesday There was a very fair attendance of delega‘'es from the city and the Western end of the Island. After the business of the Grand Division had gone through with, the delegates were given a drive to differ. eut sections of the country, visiting several points of interest. The public meeting on Wednesday nizht was held in the Baptist Church, and was very largely attended; indeed a large number were compelled to stand at the dooz-way and windows. The singing was hearty, and added greatly to the success of the meeting. The Chair was occupied by Mariin Martin, Esq. The address of welcome was delivered by Hon. James Nicholson, and responded to by William MeNeiil Simpson, Esq., Hamilton, G. W. P. The following gentleman also addressed the meeting: J. J. Chappell,

Ca'town; John P. Tanton, Ch’town; Joseph |

Rogers, Bedeque; Rov. George. Steele, Vernon River; H. -H. Pollard, Ch’town; R M. Barrett, Ch’town. The meeting, which was one of very great interest, was brought to a close by singing the National Anthem. The delegates returned by steamer H-ather Belle this morning and speak in the highest terms of the kindness and hospitality of the people of Beifast.

The London Times of yesterday received information that the Russians have ad- vanced in force to Zulfikar Pasa, and are treating Persian territory as though it were Russian

lt is believed that General Alikanhoff, commander of the Russian advance, is determined to force on a war, and that he is deceiving the Czar as to his real inten- tions.

In the House of Commons yesterdny, Lord Randolph Chrrchill stated that the Government has heard of the movements of the Russians. He also said that the the Frontier Commission was at Herat, and that it was reported that a large number of Russian reinforcements had arrived at Merv during the past fortnight.

Grand Review of Canadian Troeps,

The grand review of the troops exyaged in the suppresion of the Northwest rebel- iion, came off yesterday. Tho men presented a tine appearance, end tho the whole city was en fete. Twenty thousand people were on the streets. The review was the great- est event in the history of the city.

Orrawa, July 16.

The Supplementary Estimates for over three millions submitted to Parliament include :

Northwest war expenses, two millions six hundred thousand dollars.

Extension of the Intercolonial from Stellarton to Pictou, two hundred and fifty thousand dollars.

To make good to persons in P. E, Island the amount of duty paid the United States by them on fish and fiish oil in 1871, twenty thousand dollars.

Additional subsidy for steamers from ports in New Brunswick and P. E. Island to Enrope, two thousand five handred dollars.

Mrs. Metnnis Again. Orrawa, July 16.

Yesterday an unusual occurrence took place. A woman, whose husband died three years ago from injuries received on the railway in P. E. Island, rushed through the corridor and into the Commous Cham- ber to the bar, and there called out, ** You killee my husband ; give me back my hus band.’’ The Government had given her $2,000 in consequence of her loss. She was removed by the dourkeeper before she got very far into the chamber.

The Royal Marriage.

As the time for the marriage of Princess | Beatrice to Prince Henry of Battenberg approaches, the Queen is devoting a great portion of her time to the details of the ceremony. Her Majosty and Right Hon. Gen. Sir Henry Ponsonby are arranging the list of guests, which wili be much more extended than was at firat contem- plated. Amonz these invited to be pre- | sent at the ceremony is the ex Empress Eugenie, who has cignified her intention of being at Whippingham Church, in the Isle of Wight, where the ceremony is to be per- formed on the 23rd inst. It is now defi- nitely settled that the service will be read by Rev. Dr. Benson, Archbishop of Cunter- bury, and Rev. Dr. Browns, Bishop of Winchester. Rev. Randall T. Davidson, Dean of Windsor, and Canon Prothero will probably assist dt the ceremonial.

Buchanan vs. evening found a verdict for the defendant.

This morning the prisoner, Aloxander Gillis, indicted for the murder of Patrick Callaghan, was placed in the dock in order | that a day might be fixed for his trisl. Mr. | H--desen, Q C.,on behalf of the Orewn. on effilavit moved that the trial should stand | over for the present. He stated that there was a large mass of evidence to be heard, | that the witnesses resided in both King’s and Queen’s Counties, that the trial when | commenced would last over a week, that the Georgetown Court opened next Tnes- | day, and the trial could not be begun and | finished before tha day.

The Court (Palmer, C J , Peters and! Hensley, J. J.,) ordered that tho trial) should stand over till next January, or until | the next Court should open in this County, ! at which Gillis could be tried.

This enables the Crown to cail a special sitting of the Court before next J»nuary.

O'Conner vs. McKinnon & McLean — This case is now being tried before Mr. Justice Peters. Davies, Q. C., for the plaintift; Peters & Peters for the de- fendants.

Tae Opposition Press have been striving to make sume capital out of the fact for three days after to the sixth instant, no tobacco or spirits could be taken out of bond at any price. An explanation has been made by the Minister of Customs tu the effect that on the evening of the 5th inst., the officers, both of customa and excise, throughout the country were in- structed by telegraph not to allow spirits to go out of bond on and after the 6th, pend- ing readjustment of the duties, When the House met on the 6th, the order to go into ways and means was at once taken, but the Loader of the Opposition saw fit to take the opportunity to move his amendment en the Northwest situation. This occupied the House for the three days refarred to by the Opposition Press,
