Funeral services were held in mid - afternoon in the gothic- arched Washington Cathedral. The burial services with military rites followed at Arlington, rest- ing place of the U.S. war dead. Dulles was a major in the First World War.

The cathedral was nearly filled. The President and Mrs. Eisen- hower\were there. So were Vice- President Nixon, members of the cabinet and the Supreme Court, the Congress, the Washington dip- lomatic corps and the other world diplomats.

Hundreds of persons gathered at the cathedral to watch the dig- nitaries arrive, to murmur at the sight of Gromyko and to stand silent as the flag-covered coffin was borne in and then out.

The pallbearers wére members of all the armed forces. The honorary pallbearers were high officials and intimate friends of Dulles.

prised a special guard of honor.
