A Maw named Cornelius Cronan lost his life last Monday « vening, on the N. B. Railway. near Fairville, N. B. It appears that he had beeu walking on the track (though the evi- dence on that point is not clear) and that he had been strack by the train. As it was when found his body was frightful mutilated, the breast bone and left arm broken, the skull ex- tensively fractured, the whole base of the skull being separated from the upper portion, and the vertebra of the neck dislocated.

Wartst Mrs. Langtry was playing in Mon- treal the other evening, the students of Me- Gill College oceupied the ‘‘gods,’ aad at the end of the fourth act they lowered a magnifi- cent boquet of flowers on to the stage, which fell at the feet of the ‘‘!ersey Lily.” Attach- el to the boquet was a bow of college ribbon, and to show her appreciation of this testimony from the students, Mrs. Langtry pinned the ribbon to her dress. This act was loudly applauded by the large audience present.

Doyle—-**Corngoose” — was arraigned for steal- ing a canary bird and cage from the residence of Joseph Unsworth, Esq. The theft was proven, and Doyle was sentenced 80 81x months’ imprisonment, with hard labor. Alfred Farmer, a notorious young vagrant, who, a short time ago, broke out of jail, was sent back for four months. Patrick Dunn, another young vagrant, was sent up for four months, while Daniel McFadyen was sen- tenced to one month’s imprisonment for entering the store of Mr. J. M. Auld.

A sHockixe murder is reported from liverpool, G. B. A pointsman on a railway saw a maa brutally abuse a young woman and throw ker in the canal. On her lifeless body being recovered,a short time afterwards it was found much brnised from kicks and blows, and her front teeth had been knocked out. man waded to the opposite side of the canal and made good his escape. The body was identified as that of. Susannah Hadon, a young lady of eighteen, who had been keeping company with three men, one of whom had threatened her. On the night of the murder she left home to goto the theates, aud was taurderwd pruveblly on ker rvturn.

Dcrine the gale of Monday night, whilst a kiln of ware was being burnt at the pottery, a spark caught in the Company’s warehouse and caused considerable damage. Had it not been for the prompt action of Mr. Hornsby, who was superinterding the kiln, the warehouse and contents would have been destroyed. As it was quite a quantity of ware was damaged and broken in putting the fire out.

As an instance a horse belonging to Mr. Gill, Little York, slipped and fell on Great George Street, The traveiler of the vehicle came in collision with and broke one of the animals ribs. The rib pressed hard against the heart, and caused immediate death, The horse was valued at $100.00.

Quite a sensation was produced last evening in St. Luke’s (Episcopal) Cathedral when Rev. Mr. Maturin delivered a sermon on confession and absolution, in which he expressed his strong belief in both, and said the doctrime had always been taught by the church. He announced that confessions would be heard at St. Luke's from ten to one o’clock and from two to six o’clock this evening. The sermon and the announce- ments of Rev. Mr. Maturin are the sensa- tion of the hour here among Protestants, while the Catholics look curiously en.

The Situation in Ireland.

Lonpon, Nov. 15.

The news from Ireland is alarming. Both the National League and the Orange- men have announced mass meetings for to- day, and the prospect of collision being so obvious the Castle authorities issued a proclamation forbidding both assemblages. The Orangemen acquiesced, but the Leaguers have placarded the district de- claring their intention of holdiug a meeting to-morrow. ‘The entire city of Limerick is patrolled by police ond soldiers.

Wreek of an Unknown Ship.

Norts Sypyry, Nov. 15.

The operator at Meat Cove reports the wreck at that point, on the night before last, of a large timber laden ship. The dis- truction of the vessel is so complete that it is impossible to make out her name or class. The crew must have been all lost. The telegraph line being interrupted this repor was 48 hours getting in. ,

A Bold Train Robbery.

Larepo, Nov. 15.

A bold train robbery was perpetrated twenty miles south of here last night. The train was thrown from the track, and forty masked men attacked it, and compelled the conductor to surrender $8,000.
