travel, especially of life and customs here, contrasting with things in P. E. Island.
After an absences of twenty-one years, | find changes beyond anything I had antici- pated. Cities, towns and villages have in inapy instances undergone great aliera- ticns. The improvements made in the style and proportions of public and private buildings, the cleanliness and emoothness of the streets, the admirable system of sewerage, and the abundant water supply, bringing increased health and comfort into every department of private life,—seems to stand out in striking contrast with our own lack of enterprise or estimate of the vastly increared comforts which others possess, and which we as a people stubbornly refuse to accept. But the

have taken place among my old friends and acquaintances. Inthe houses I used to frequent, along the familiar streets, in the places of public worship, the well- remembered faces are no longer to be seen. A few only remain, but so changed that it is difficult to realize what time has accom- plished. A new race has taken possession. Strangers everywhere meet the eye. It is only by a visit to the graveyard that the solution is #btained. I was much impressed when in

The first day I was in London I had the privilege of showing my respect for the life and charac- ter of one of England’s true nobility—the great and good late

[t was a very disagreeable day, the rain pouring down as if part of th programme; yet it did not prevent the immense proces- sion (largely made up of representatives from the numerous benevolent or Christian societies which the late Earl had formed or patronized) from manifesting their love and affection for their common friend. In fact, London appeared to be in earnest in show- ing their sorrow for their great loss. The venerahle Westminster Abbey was crowded in every part, and when the procesrion reached the gates, it was with great difli- culty that room could be made for the coffin and the immediate friends of the deceased. I had au excellent position from which to view the proceedings, on the pedestal of the statue «f the late Sir Robert Peel, uear the pulpit. The solemnity of the services seemed to touch every heart, while the subdued hush and the muffled responses indicated the sincerity of the vest throng. The clear yet measured tones of the Dean’s voice, as the old, well-known service proceeded—the solemn chant—the soft, sweet music, intermixed with the de»p toliiog thunder of the magnificent organ, reververating through the arches of the acble Abbey (as if the dust of Englaad’s greatest men, which for centuries had been sleeping underneath, was in some mys- terious way roused to participate in the impressive service), were all exceedingly appropriate. He died as a Christian. As yet there does not appear any one of noble bicth or rank prepared to fill the vacant place. His name will, no doubt, be a household word for ages to come, standing out among the heraldry of England, like Victoria among its Kinga and Queens. THE WEATHER

is much in use, stone being largely replaced by wood. ‘The blocks are of spruce, mostly 6 in. long, 3x4. First the earth is re- moved so as to show a fairly rounded surface and properly graded, then six inches of broken stone, mixed with mortar, ‘aid on and levelled, The blocks are then placed about g of an inch apart, the open- ings filled with medium siza gravel, and boiling pitch poured in go as to unite all firmly together ard render the pavement waterproof. It of course is somewhat costly, but, if comfort and durability is desired, it is well worth the outlay.

Five or six houses, with their inflammable ecnients were quickly consumed, in the midst of a densely populated district. But for the ample water supply, no doubt whole streets would have been swept away. Will our citizens imsist om the horse being first stolen before locking the door? I fear, when it is too late, they will wako up, end rub their eyes with astonished vexation. England is now in the heat of

Agricultural.
Sir,—The dairying interests of this section of the country are receiving some impetus from the excellent papers which are prepared and read at the monthiy meetings by members of the Farmer's Dairyman’s Association, which was organiz- ed here two years ago. Doubtless, it may be some time yet before a general interest will be evinced in the theories taught. Bet we know that an oak is not felled with one blow. And so we intend to follow the in- junction of the old adage, which is, ‘* Do what thou onghtest, anc, come what can.’ Some of Charlottetown’s scientitic agri- culturisis have generously offered to give our society the henefit of that theoretical knowledge of farming, which has enabled them to make a snecess of that ardons call- ing. In the future we shall thankfully acknowledge the preseuce of any of these gentlemen, so that any one may have an opportunity to hear them. The first lecturer this season shall be Charles Palmer, Q. G., who is to lecture in the school house at New Perth, Tuesday, the 24th inst. Mr. Palmer’s reputation as a popular and humorous spesker is so well known, we do not fear to promise that, all who shall come to hear him on the 24th will be satisfied. Wut Kaneen,
