The Coming Eclipse

Mr. Colby here turned round to Mr. Le- baron and Messrs. Davidson, Harper, Jones, and Galbraith, who were the only adversaries present in all the vast throng, and said, amidst round after round of ap- plause :

‘**] defy these gentlemen to go into any part of Stanstead and discuss this question, and their reception will probably be very little

less cordial that which they have ex perienced here to-day. 1 am not go- log to accept the opinions vt a few clergy- men onf the constitutionality of the

Jesuits’ Estates Bill, and although I have the greatest respect for these gentlemen in their proper sphere, 1 will rather exercise my own judgment after passing twenty-two years in Parliament than depend too much upon theirs I would rather stand by the vote of Sir John Macdonald, Sir John Thompson, Hon. Ed- ward Blake and Hon. Mr. Mills, to whom I look for constitutional guidance, as 1 do these clergymen in spiritual affairs. (Loud and con- tinued cheering. You have been led to be- lieve, gentlemen. that I stated what was false when I observed that I spoke for the Protest-

ants of Quebec province, and furthermore that i had said the Protestants were satisfied with the bill.” Hon. Mr. Colby here quoted the following pass byes from his celebrated speech : ‘The Protestants of Quebec have never ad-

mitted that the Jesuits had any legal claims on their estates ;" and again, ‘“‘the Protest ants of Quebec never admitted that the Jesuits had any moral claim upon their es- tates, and they had a very nauseous pill to swallow when the name of tie Pope was in- serted in the preamble of the bill. He would take the opportunity of saying to these men who had come into the county of Stanstead as the self-constituted champions of Protestantism, that there were no more devoted Protestants in the Dominion than the members of that faith in this i’ro- vipee. They are the descendants of the old and truest ty pes of Protestants, whose fathers fought and bled for the establishment of civil and religious liberty. No minority has ever been better treated, ex rept during the two

Grain Rust.

Srr,—Hon. Senator Haythorne, in the Patriot of the 12th inst., criticizes my statement that an abundance of potash lone in soil will not save grain from rust [I gave an instance, from Liebig, of a soil which contained a large proportion of pot- ash, and was yet noted for producing rusty grain. I thought, and still think, that this is good proof that an abundance of potash in the soil will not of itself save grain from rust.

Mr. Haythorne then states that the pre- sence of phosphate of iron in a soil produces rust. Now, it so happens, that phosphite of iron is one of those products of chemical action found only in marshy and boggy soils. It occurs in connection with bog iron ore (Thomson). Any soil which con- tains this material in a natural state is of that wet, retentive character which, by vir- tue of its moisture alone is favorable to the production of rust. Liebig’s heath soil No. 12 is of this character, and when a portion of it suftficlent to make a soil 15 inches deep, and extensive enough to bear two distinct kinds of grain, was removed to an- other locality, it carried all its physical properties with it, and still held twice as much moisture as the dry soil around it. It was this extra moisture, and not the oc- currence of poisonous ‘** blue iron earth ” in the soil which favored the production of rust.

We have before us two agents said to produce rusted grain. It is certain that whichever is the true agent it must be pre- sent where rust occurs. In every instance we will find that an extra development of rust has been accompanied with an unusual quantity of moisture, either atmospheric or ‘errestial. Butwe can point to ten thou- sand instances where rust has occurred, and there is no blue iron earth in the soil.

i may say that it is scarcely worth dis- cussing the rust question on Liebig’s basis, for Liebig wrote before the true nature of the rust plant was made known by DeBary and his successors,

New Men In Congress.

A writer in the Philadelphia Press has written a long letter descriptive of the new men in Congress now convened at Washing- ton. There are in the House 118 new members. Here is what he says about some of them: ‘‘Herman Stump, of Maryland, is ‘a handsome old school gentleman, a bachelor with a snowy white mustache and kindly countenance.’ H. P. Cheatham, from North Carolina, is the only negro Congressman in the House. T. H. Paynter, of Kentucky, is described as ‘tall and lanky, and dresses like a wood- chopper.’ John M. Clancey, of New York, is set down as a fine generous fellow ‘ with a heart as big as a cow’s.’ David B. Brumer is a big, hearty, wise old man John Quinn, of New York, we are told, ‘has a bucketful of raw brains and can talk on all occasions.’” And thus the writer in the Press discusses the assembled wisdom of his countrymen.
