Naturally. there was a good reason for this play. The infer- ence he drew that West c ou ld not have the king of spades came from the bidding. West had passed three diamonds and also had passed four spades.

West therefore could not have both the king of clubs and king of spades and pass each time in the face of his partner‘s two bid. It followed that East had to have the king of spades and the only hope that remained was that the king was unguarded.
